Starz has provided Deadites Online advanced screeners of the first two episodes of upcoming season 2 of Ash vs Evil Dead. Check out our spoiler-free reviews!
Episode 201: “Home”
The party in Jacksonville is over when Ash, Pablo, and Kelly are summoned by Ruby back to Ash’s hometown to form an unlikely alliance. Ash’s dad Brock, and the local pub rats give a chilly welcome to the man who’s come to save them from evil.
Review:
The first episode takes place right after where season 1 left off with Ash, Pablo, and Kelly having a keg party in Ash’s dream retirement home of Jacksonville, Florida. The party is interrupted and Ash discovers he needs to return to his hometown of Elk Grove Michigan to confront Ruby. Great performances by all. The production seems to have been dialed up quite a bit including tighter editing, lighting, and special effects. KNB EFX, who did the special effects for Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness, really shows they’re masters of their craft. There are lots more practical effects including lots of blood and gore. There is some CG but it’s done very well and not as noticeable as the first season. The only things we didn’t like were the demon spawns, who are all grown up and now terrorizing Ruby. They could have been more creative with their demons. Fortunately we will be seeing more demon bad guys this season.
Episode 202: “The Morgue”
Pablo’s grasp on reality is tested when Ruby reveals the Necronomicon has gifted him with premonitions. Meanwhile, in the morgue, Ash and Kelly discover Brock’s date might not be the warm body he’s banking on.
Review:
The second episode is crazier than the first but the writing seems to have taken a dive. Some one-liners are cringe-worthy and fall flat while the revision of Ash’s new backstory is dubious at best. We won’t spoil the crazy things that happen in episode 2 but let’s just say fans will be really surprised they thought of it and actually filmed it.
