Frist Evil Dead Remake Reviews From SXSW World Premiere

By News

The first reviews of the Evil Dead remake are rolling in from the premiere at SXSW:

Bloody Disgusting: “It’s even gorier than you’re expecting. I seriously don’t have a clue as to how they wrangled an “R” rating here. Blood, pus, bone fragments, limbs and brains are flung around with playful abundance and the result is both punishing and exhilarating… This film doesn’t condemn its audience, it exalts it – and as a result it’s able to achieve a sustained symphony of carnage that energizes rather than exhausts.”

Shock Till You Drop: “Evil Dead is slickly put together, but it is also vapid and vacuous. It wants to be an entertaining film because that’s its job, but it’s only willing to try so hard at it. For horror fans, that’s probably enough. There is gore aplenty and over the top violence. But you’ve seen all that before, and recently. How much is a variation on the theme really worth to you?”

Ain’t It Cool News: “I won’t delve into the 3rd act at all, but if you are an experienced EVIL DEAD fan, prepare to be floored. This isn’t at all the playful EVIL DEAD 2 or ARMY OF DARKNESS, this EVIL DEAD wants you to bleed, it wants to hurt you, scare you and freak you the fuck out. The theater had screams, cheers, gasps and hyperventilating, “EW EW EW EW EWWWWWS”.”

Collider: The most disturbing thing about Evil Dead isn’t a moment in Evil Dead. The movie could serve as a twisted mirror for our desire to see a level of violence rarely shown on the big screen except Alvarez isn’t judging his audience. He’s indulging them. That’s not to say he should be preachy or restrained. By the metric he has laid out for his picture’s goals, Alvarez’ film is a wild success. It’s a crowdpleaser that will leave gore-hounds stuffed, but we should all be somewhat shaken by the gruesome feast Evil Dead asks us to devour.

The Hollywood Reporter: “Gory scares abound in a remake that will win the hearts of many of the original’s fans”

Sam Raimi Explains Evil Dead 4

By News

Sam Raimi finally explains what’s going on with Evil Dead 4:

Those guys made me say that. I am thinking about it but a crowd goes “Come on Sam, do it!” so I said “Okay, I guess I was talking to my brother about it.” But I feel like I was pushed into saying that, a little bit. In the hallway today I joked with Ivan [his brother] “Get working on that script!” but I really don’t know.

I’m afraid that every time I talk about it people get really mad at me when I don’t follow through with it. I would like to work on the script over the summer, that much is true. But the reason to come back and do it again is only that they’re making me, those fans.

I was saying to Ivan “Why do they stay on this thing? Why do they keep at it?” and he said “They want to make a movie. You’re a filmmaker and your fans are asking you to make the movie. What are you, an idiot? Make the movie!” I guess there’s something I don’t see. It makes sense when Ivan says it… but I didn’t have a tremendous amount of passion until right now to bring to it.

I love working with Bruce Campbell and Rob Tapert, I have so much fun making those movies, so… but the fans are really forcing me into it.

Well there you have it folks. The fans have spoken.
