Bruce Campbell Teases That an “Ash vs. Evil Dead” Animated Series Is Being Discussed

Bruce is trolling us. I wouldn't put too much stock into it.

Like they did in early 2000s when they kept teasing an Evil Dead 4, but eventually we did get Evil Dead (2013) followed by Ash vs Evil Dead. It just took another decade to get there, and I would absolutely support a limited animated series picking up where the show left off with Ash and Lexx in a post apocalyptic setting with Ash trying to find out what happened to Brandy, Kelly, Pablo, etc...

An animated continuation of Ash Vs Evil Dead is an awful proposal. I loathe that people are actually applauding this idea.
Well, I can't quite grasp wanting to see a continuation of the show in any form, so I guess I just let its fans get excited about and eat up whatever they're offered now without getting too worked up about it. I've already come to terms with the fact that what I love and I want from Evil Dead is very different from what a lot of the fandom seems to love and want from it, so whatever. Actually, come to think of it, I think the concept for AvED could maybe work a lot better as a retro animated series in the vein of those old '90s cartoons based on movies than it ever did as a live action show (which is not to say I'd be excited for it).

I wouldn't be shocked if this happens but it's going to be a hard sell; animation tends to die on streaming unless it's a limited series (and I can't imagine it getting picked up somewhere like HBO Max when they're tightening their belts on the genre) and the show itself went splat on cable. Good luck to them, they'll need it.

HBO Max is rumored to be merging with Discovery+, and with even good animation being cut for being too expensive it would be a surprise... but at the speed anything Evil Dead related seems to get done we likely won't see it until 2030.

well, I think it need to be limited. I don't see a series like AvsED to run something like 10 seasons....I only think what the fans need is a proper conclusion to this series. It could be a mini-series, I don't care...

In my opinion, they should at least done one more episode (movie lenght) with the real cast.

Well, I maintain that the only "proper conclusion" to Ash's story is no conclusion. It just never ends for him, one chapter closes and he's immediately thrown into a new and in many ways worse one and it doesn't matter one bit if we ever see how he gets out of that new situation, cause that one would also end with him thrown into another and another and so on... For Ash, every journey's end is just the start of a new journey. He's simply cursed to do this forever. As a matter of fact, I sincerely think the last episode of the show already concluded everything it started as well as it could, the last scene on the last episode already feels like a perfect ending to me. I've said this before, but to put a more definitive conclusion to this story is what would actually feel wrong to me.

I agree that the Season 3 ending is very likely the best ending we'll ever get (even if it did properly continue). But I'd still love to see a proper live-action continuation exploring what they had planned with Season 4. It can still happen.

An animated series continuing from where Season 3 left off, using whatever story they had planned, is totally bogus. That's something to be done when it's an absolute certainty there is no possible way it would ever continue properly in live-action form. For example, like when Bruce Campbell is either dead or crippled.

As long as he's still moving, still in decent health, and still yappingly contradicting himself like good old Bruce does, then there's still a chance Starz will get bought out and/or get a change of ownership/management that would favor and push for Season 4 (live-action) with everybody coming back.

Even if there was no more chance of that live-action Season 4, I'd still cringe at the idea of an animated series picking up where it left off. It misses the appeal of the show/movies (Evil Dead).

It would be like the pornography industry suddenly going, 'Hey, we're no longer going to do live-action, we're going to do animated porn, but your favorite pornstars will still be voicing!' And it's like, you're missing the whole point of why we watch.

We watch (Evil Dead) for the actors, the practical effects, the real-feeling world where all this wackiness feels tangible. (And, yea, I know some people are into animated porn, just like some people would be more into an animated Evil Dead over live-action Evil Dead, but I think you understand what I'm saying).

Keep in mind; AVed is a proven ratings non-starter. So it's got a couple of hills to climb if it comes back in any format at all. I think it can work in an animated format, but it will require strong animation.

Here are some questions for everyone who like the idea of a cartoon continuation:

1) What network (streaming or not) should it be on?
2) How should the animation look?
3) How many seasons? Just one? As much as we can get?

Lionsgate and Starz would have first dibs, and would probably want to hang on to the rights for the show... but I would go with more of a Japanese animation style for the show.

Me:

1) I'm thinking Netflix or something like that, if possible.

2) As realistic to the live action show as possible.

3) As many as we can get, with the last possible one ending the story fully and completely.

1: Yeah, it'd have to be Starz. Netflix is done up to the gills and is chopping its animation forces, so is HBO Max. Getting an animated show on streaming is hard as hell.

2: My ideal animated show would combine the art of Nick Bradshaw with the writing of Steve Niles.

3: Enough to make it make narrative sense.

If this thing actually gets made, I'm totally with @MaidOfKandar in wishing for the visual style to be 2D animation based on the look and feel of the Nick Bradshaw comics. As for the narrative style, I'd like it to be a throwback to animated series from the '90s, very episodic with a lighter, more adventurous tone. 25 minute episodes, about 13 episodes in a season. The season could tell an overarching story, but I'd like each episode to be its own complete, standalone tale.

When it comes to which network or streaming service could produce or air it, Starz is the logical choice, but I doubt they'd be interested in pursuing it given the failure of the live action show and their overall treatment of it. Considering the link to Evil Dead Rise, HBO seems like a possibility, but that place is a hot mess right now and like Maid said they seem to be cutting down on animated projects. I feel Netflix would probably be the ideal place for it, actually. Honestly, I'm having a hard time imagining any other networks or streaming services showing interest in the project.

I would think it would have to be Starz. Starz/Lionsgate owns it. The whole reason we didn't get a Season 4 is because Lionsgate would not allow it. It was hinted that Netflix would have picked it up but Lionsgate refused because they don't want anyone else solely profiting off a brand they own, so Lionsgate would rather see AVED die than give pleasure to anybody else. So I don't see Lionsgate allowing an animated AVED anywhere else.

If this animated thing happened, I would want it to be its own thing, not whatever they planned for live-action Season 4. Because live-action Season 4 can still happen.

If this animated thing did happen, my wishful scenario would be that its a story that starts from scratch. Redo the Evil Dead story, but give an alternate slant to things. Retell similar but different events of the trilogy starring Ash, maybe finally explore Ash's life right after the crazy events of the trilogy, and then go into the Ash Vs Evil Dead parts, eventually using the discarded Season 2 ending of Kelly being/becoming Ash's daughter. Then we can eventually get to something like post-apocalyptic Season 4 (but NOT what they would actually do for a live-action Season 4).

Ideally, I would love if the animated series was so popular that it reignited talk of reviving live-action Ash Vs Evil Dead. Then we can have these two different Evil Dead universes (live-action and animated) side by side.

That's what I wish for if animated Evil Dead happens. But all I really truly care about is live-action. The animated series should only be a little fun side thing, not the main event.
