@Hurley - they can't address it; they tried to negotiate with Universal for the right so that footage, the characters and the metal hand but no go.   I think "Boomstick" isn't properly TM'd vernacular so they got away with it.

Yeah, I thought it would be something like that, it's a real shame. But thanks for the explanation. :)

At the other hand, Ash should be able to say that he was sucked through a portal to the 13th century, because that happened in Evil Dead II, but he can't say anything about the army, the metal hand or how he got back to the present... Right?

Maybe I'm going out on a limb here, but could this be a new type of Deadite... or something other type of creature as I believe Rob Tapert had promised we would see in an interview?!?

I absolutely think so. He said that we'll see some new creatures. I'm sure this is one of them.

The real question is which one is it? Have the Deadites been building up, and simply evolved after all these years because Sam Raimi said "The Deadites have been fairly dormant over the last 20 to 30 years." Either way it will be interesting to see as time goes on, and more info comes out.

It definitely is; it looks a lot like a lumpy Cenobite, tho

Anyway: thoughts:

LIKES

* The camerawork and visuals all feel very Evil Dead

* So do the effects.

* Force cam!  FINALLY really forcecam after the shit in the remake.

* Ash made his own girdle.  Of course he would.

* Build cam on the girdle.

* The ridiculous pompous monologue is perfectly IC from the movies.

* The Deadite that comes through Ash's trailer door looks like Evil Ash from ED2.  Hmmm!

* Ash's completely dead eyes when he tells the story of the Cabin :/

* The totally ridiculous Superman moment where he rips off his jacket.

* The cartoonishness of the boomstick in the floor trap

* All the stuff from the fight scene(s).

* The blatant AOD and TED references in same.  Ash still fights like Ash.

* DEADITES HAVE WHITE EYES AND FIGHT LIKE DEADITES.

* The ridiculous over-the-topness of the chainsaw throw

* The granny line

DISLIKES

* Pablo and his hefe and his mystical shamanism continues to be a landmine of possible racist claptrap.

* Sometimes the sitcom ridiculousness takes it right out of the genre to the point where the weirdness of the tone works against it.

* Ash's characterisation...is wobbly to say the least.  Some of the one-liners feel at home coming out of his mouth. Others make him feel like a strange Sam Axe/"Bruce Campbell" combination.  Movie canon Ash was stoic; all the humor came from the outlandish stuff that would happen to him.  Here, Bruce is running around popping off one liners.  I expected him to start asking where the fuck Goldlick was.

* "I'm going to tell you something I've never told anyone." And just like that Ted's character's erased from canon ;p

* How the hell does Ash have the Necronomicon?  Why would he KEEP the Necronomicon if the whole show's plotline is about how he's been running away from his responsibilities, why did he save the Nec?

* That fight with the dolls was ripped off from the comic books.  Yes, they finally succeeded in actually ripping off Dynamite.

* The awful CGI on the doll effect.

* Amanda and Ruby's storyline comes off as a total afterthought.

* The cardio line is very Bruce vs very Ash

* The age jokes are properly exaggerated but really; false teeth and a girdle?  Why does he have to much weightlifting equipment if he never uses it?

* The awkward grossness of Ash repeatedly flirting with Kelly.  If they do end up in a mentorship situation where she's like  his daughter then this is going to be icky on reflection.

* The complete awkwardness of the Judaism joke that just grinds the whole trailer to a conclusion.

So mixed opinion with a slight lean toward positive! We'll see what we get in terms of clips over the next two months.

I'm sure the whole "You know they were Jewish?" line is likely a nod to the Raimi's who themselves were raised Jewish.

I think Universal wants to keep control in case there's an AOD 2.

It is sadly all about the money for Universal on this deal, and I think they are missing out on a big opportunity when it comes to AvED.

If it was, it couldn't have been more awkward.  I like the trailer the more I rewatch it, but it's still not a perfect experience for me.

Yeah, but would Raimi and Campbell really do Army of Darkness 2 for Universal after this? Or maybe they could do their own remake. I wouldn't even be surprised.

There are maybe few thing that bothered me, like if it was maybe trying to be funny just too hard, but overall, those are not the things to be worry about in the trailer. We'll just have to wait if they will present themselves in the show the same way and deal with them then. And for example I have no problem with the Jewish joke. I actually chuckled a bit. This is something we though we will never see again and in my opinion, it looks way better than anyone could have hope for. So both thumbs up.

I don't think they would, but Universal likely sees the worth of keeping the copyright just in case.  I wonder how much they make off of the license from Dynamite.

Different strokes, but the awkwardness left cold and it's a weird way to end it.

In any event I like it more, the more I watch it.

Really hope someone's gonna put the Ash vs Evil Dead Comic-Con panel on YouTube. So far nothing, but maybe it's just too soon.

RE: Evil Dead Television Series

I loved the trailer!

I found the glass bottle stabbing scene rather... disturbing, although the exchange between Ash and Pablo in the car was amusing. (Strangely I can watch other over-the-top gore and vilence with exploding heads and decapitations with no problem. In fact I'll find it funny.) There's just something about repeated stabbings in the neck with a broken bottle that makes me go "Aiiicihe...."

The rest of it was fine though, although Ash did seem a little off. More Bruce Campble as he is now than Ash of the past, but to be fair this is NOT Ash of the past. This is Ash who has lived on and aged from then. (I found the aging jokes funny by the way.) He's kind of stuck in the past but that doesn't mean he is exactly the sae as he was then.

It's probably a bit too eary to judge yet, anyway.

I didn't find Pablo's mention of his father being a shaman as racist caricature at all. Shamanism, or like religions, do exist in South American countries although often blended with Catholicism. I've heard Africans and Asians speak about witchcraft practices too , and they'll talk about it like it's a real living thing back home. I've even spoken with individuals myself. Which isn't to say they all practice it themselves. Any more than Pablo does.

I particularly liked the fact Pablo speaks with (presmably the actor's own) American accent, as putting on a strong South/Mid American accent could easily lean into the world of racist carricature. Of course if the actor spoke with that accent for real, then it's just another accent. It's when people put it on it can get hokey.

I kind of like the idea there is another character who has had links with the supernatural world, even if only from his relative's hearsay.

And I found the joke at the end very funny.

I have good feelings about this show.

Incidentally, did Ash do a telekinetic thing with the flying chainsaw, or did I see that wrong? I.e. he gestures with his hand and the saw comes flying. I imagine it was just the way the footage was cut, or I missed the throw.  Just wondered if he had learned any helpful magic tricks from the Necronimcion akin to the game A Fistful of Boomstick.

Also the show was denied a permit to film at a reserve.  Surprised they wouldn't be shooting on the Ghosthouse backlot, where they shot the majority of the remake.  Maybe they want to differentiate the look of the different forests involved?

I thought so too at first but if you rewind a little you can see Pablo using his foot to pop the chainsaw to Ash.

RE: Evil Dead Television Series

Hi!

I'm new here.  After 23 years we will finally get a new Evil Dead!  The trailer was amazing it feel very Evil Dead 2 with the comedic elements of Army of Darkness.  Hope they will rework some CGI elements.  Can't wait for October!

MaidofKandar I think you're a little bit harsh on the trailer but I totally understand.  I remember when Army of Darkness came out in the nineties I was expecting a mix between Conan/Indiana Jones/Excalibur and Evil Dead 2.  I was really disappointed by the lack of gore and the over the top looney tunes elements.  As a movie AoD is really entertaining but as an horror movie it failed.  It's still epic but not as epic I imagined.   I think this is the same kind of scenario  ;)

* Pablo and his hefe and his mystical shamanism continues to be a landmine of possible racist claptrap.

Yes I agree this could easily happens.  But peoples need to understand the difference between a racist jokes over a caricature (which is not easy today).  I think Ash could be easily point out as a racist since he jokes on everyone.

I admit there's a lot of Bruce in this new old Ash.  I was really expecting an influence of My Name is Bruce when they announced Ash live in a trailer.  I'm not surprised with the combination. I can't say i'm happy with this direction but it's ok.

* How the hell does Ash have the Necronomicon?  Why would he KEEP the Necronomicon if the whole show's plotline is about how he's been running away from his responsibilities, why did he save the Nec?

I understand your point but there's also no consistency between events in each movie.  In the first one Ash burned the Necronomicon.  The second movie is more a remake and don't really match with the first one.  There's also a lots of differences between the end of ED2 and the beginning of AoD.  If Ash kept the Necronomicon when he came back from Medieval time, he simply erased everything from Evil Dead 1 and 2 and Dr.Knowby never found the Necronomicon.  We will probably never get any explanation for this.  We could only guess nobody can destroy this evil book.  So Ash kept it with his porn magazines.

This could be a good Idea.  "Ash return to the cabin to find more clues then meet Dr.Knowby and realize nothing happens because he kept the book."

They tried to blend every stories together in the trailer with the exception of AoD (Damn Univesal!). But we can feel it still related to Army of Darkness.  We can see they struggled to make a coherent storyline since nothing really match together.

* The cardio line is very Bruce vs very Ash

Yep could be a line in My Name is Bruce. ;)

* The age jokes are properly exaggerated but really; false teeth and a girdle?  Why does he have to much weightlifting equipment if he never uses it?

I'm sure the false teeth came from Sam and Ivan Raimi's idea.  Remember Drag Me to Hell?  This is the same kind of humour.  For the weightlifting equipment, I think it simply good example of Ash as a real average Joe.   Everybody have one but nobody really use it.  ;)

* The awkward grossness of Ash repeatedly flirting with Kelly.  If they do end up in a mentorship situation where she's like  his daughter then this is going to be icky on reflection.

Yeah it really awkward but this is Ash now.  Old, greedy and cocky.  He still think he looks good and attractive.  Ash is a cool and heroic character, but he's also non politically correct. So we must expect non-sense and risky decision.

So mixed opinion with a slight lean toward positive! We'll see what we get in terms of clips over the next two months.

My opinion is rather positive.  Some elements I don't like they carry from Army of Darkness and My Name is Bruce but overall I think it will be a great serie!  :)
