Early Army of Darkness poster concepts

[MCT28]

Just stumbled across this video from an artist by the name of Jeff Watts talking about his first professional art job where he was hired by Universal to do the "pre-finish" of the US Army of Darkness poster before Michael Hussar was brought in to do the final version we know today. Besides just showing off the painting, he talks about the process, shows off the pose reference photos, and the stylistic choices he made (since this channel is part of an online art school he runs).

Also briefly shown in the video are some sketches by Italian artist Renato Casaro for the European AOD poster.

Such a cool glimpse behind the scenes
It’s fascinating to see how an iconic poster started as a strong, painterly pre-finish, with Watts already locking in the pose, composition, and drama long before the final Hussar version. Breakdowns like this are pure gold—they really show how much creative power and decision-making happens before the “official” image we all recognize.

I feel really dumb that only now it dawned on me that the chainsaw coming out of the water on those sketches is a reference to excalibur. In fact, those early concepts seem to be very inspired by the posters for John Boorman's 1981 Excalibur movie, specifically.
