STUDIOCANAL is thrilled to announce the deal today which confirms they will represent the EVIL DEAD franchise (excluding “Army of Darkness”) worldwide for licensing rights in all categories.

STUDIOCANAL has represented EVIL DEAD 2 for many years now managing a strong licensing program worldwide including publishing, apparel, collectibles, gift, location-based entertainment and video games. Creative Licensing Company has been and will continue to work alongside STUDIOCANAL as sole agent.

“We are truly excited to work on one of the strongest and most iconic horror franchises of all time. We are driven to creatively develop the brand further exploring markets and opportunities in a variety of product categories worldwide delivering for fans both old and new.” states Valerie ROLANDEZ-BARRIOS, VP IP Licensing and Partnerships at STUDIOCANAL.

The Evil Dead franchise, created by Sam Raimi, centers on Ash Williams as he confronts demonic forces unleashed by the Necronomicon, an ancient and malevolent book. The original 1981 film is renowned for its intense horror, while its sequels, such as Evil Dead II, skillfully combine horror, dark humor and action. The series was revived in 2013 with a grittier, more violent reboot, followed by Evil Dead Rise in 2023 which reached $147M at the box office worldwide including $6,9M at the UK box office through STUDIOCANAL UK.

It's weird they didn't try to buy the rights for Army of Darkness from Universal.

I think what it was is that is was way easier to deal with an independent studio like Renaissance (who clearly had a much larger slice of the pie than I thought) than a major studio like MGM/Amazon (Universal doesn't own anything but AOD's North American theatrical distribution and home video rights).

Universal seems like a pain in the ass to deal with...

This is amazing news, especially in the gaming department, makes me way more hopeful of more variety for future game collabs and new evil dead games now that they have the ability to use half of the franchise now!

Sam and Bruce have been in a standoff with MGM for ages over everything AOD. Will be interesting to see what comes of this.

Curious to see if they work out a deal to revive Evil Dead: The Game, or if they will go in a different direction for future game(s) to avoid any further interaction with Saber Interactive.
