TLDR
1. This film completely wipes out the third film, it no longer happened. It takes place years after Mummy Returns.

2. Most of the cast/characters from 1 and 2 are returning. Yes, even Beni and the actor who played him.

3. It's set in the late 1950's.

4. The directors of "Ready or Not" will be directing this one with writer Dave Coggeshall doing the screenplay

I can't wait. I'm curious to what their version of the Necronomicon will look like.

I mean, they already had it in the first movie and it would have been weird if this was about just… a different Book of the Dead.

I think this probably goes without saying, but I'd strongly recommend the "first" (meaning from 1999) Mummy to anyone who hasn't seen it, just for the Evil Dead vibes alone. It's basically about a bunch of charismatic idiots who accidently read from the Book of the Dead which awakens the titular Mummy. And they then spend the rest of the movie trying to fix the mess they got themselves into while always being on the back foot since the Mummy keeps getting stronger.

It's why I love that first movie and why I also hate the second one which is basically the same thing only now everybody has a destiny and/or is a descendent of an antient Egyptian, which deflates all the raggedy charm of the characters from the first movie (and it's fucking stupid). I never saw the third one and at this point I probably never will.

I kind of hate this because of multiple reasons, and I love the fraser movies, even tomb of the dragon emperor, but another one wont work, because they casted Imhotep, despite his story being over, and the whole trilogy story being finely wrapped up, and new reboot that recently came out with a completely different tone, which should be what they focus on now, a sequel to that, not nolstalgia bait. Although at least the movie will probably be 1000 times better than all scorpion king movies combined, and I will still watch it, and if its actually good I will shut the hell up.
