Army of Darkness/Evil Dead Comics Discussion Thread!

OK, the writing's not bad but this art, y'all!

I agree... the art is not that great (Red Sonja vs. The Army of Darkness)... I'm still buying them anyway, I own all the comics, so I'm the kind of screwhead that will blindly buy anything at this point!

Remembering how great the art for Evil Dead 2: Beyond Dead by Dawn was (and seeing the sketches posted on the previous page), I kinda wish they could get these guys for the Dynamite series!

On the plus side, Hannah revealed that he another industry professional have recently been floating the idea of getting another publisher to pick up the Evil Dead 2 comic rights to reprint the Space Goat stuff and continue where the series left off. While this at the "just talk" stage, he said he'd love to revive the title, and has ideas ready to go if it does happen.

Oh boy, I would be thrilled if it ever happens! I really liked the Evil Dead 2 comic book series! Got the 5 Trade paperbacks and the Christmas One-Shot when I learned about the cancellation of the Omnibus and the end of Space Goat Productions...

Nah, man... Dynamite has to spend the budget for their comics on getting twelve cover artists for every issue! Why would they want to take money away from that and use it for a good interior artist?

You know, I wonder if Hannah and his unnamed professional friend should try and revive the ED2 Omnibus Kickstarter the way that Jasco and Lynvander revived the ED2 board game... just to cast their line out into the lake of fans to say "Hey, we want to make up for this previously broken promise. If this does well, we have serious interest in reviving the comic series proper."

Covers for Red Sonja vs. The Army of Darkness #3 (on sale June 4th, 2025):
The unlikely alliance of the She-Devil with a Sword and the Guy with the Gun continues as the two reluctant partners race to thwart Kulan Gath and his unholy Deadite horde! The quest to keep the Necronomicon out of Gath's twisted hands takes a turn for the subterra-nean as Sonja and Ash prepare to enter the Tomb of the Three Kings and these definitely ain't the ones that followed a certain star to Bethlehem!
Veteran S-Mart shoppers TIM SEELEY and JIM TERRY fill readers' carts with action, adventure, and unadulterated mayhem in Red Sonja vs. The Army of Darkness #3 featuring bonus cover coupons courtesy of SEELEY, BJORN BARENDS, TOM RANEY, and NIKKOL JELENIC!

This is definitely Seeley's best cover of the series so far, so I'll try to grab that one and the Raney one.

EDIT: While not related to the actual comic, Bruce Campbell commented on a piece of Ash/Sonja fan art:

I loved the art for that, the first Dynamite arc and Ash vs Evil Dead!

Also, I will be buying that clinch cover, heh.

So... we're in a bit of a conundrum here. There are conflicting reports of the release status of Red Sonja vs Army of Darkness #1. Two of my local comic shops has Previews World baked into their site, so you can see which books and variants they're getting. As of this morning, they said RSvsAOD #1 would be out today, as did League of Comic Geeks. However, the actual Previews World page said the street date is April 23rd (next Wednesday as of the time of writing this). Come to find out, the issue has been released digitally this morning, and now Previews World says May 14th is the physical release date, releasing alongside issue two. Dynamite has gone quiet on their socials (they still post things, but don't respond to comments), so they're no help. I reached out to Tim Seeley himself to find out if he knows what the hell is going on, but he hasn't got back to me yet.

My guess is that it got shoved back thanks to what happened with Diamond. I'd bet on the May date being right.

So I procured a digital copy of Red Sonja vs Army of Darkness #1 and... I'm not really sure how I feel about it. I'm not a Red Sonja fan, and most everything I have read with her has been crossovers, so I can't really speak on her characterization and whatnot since I've really only been exposed to her when she's part of a wildly different story than her usual series. As for the Army of Darkness side of things... you can definitely tell Tim Seeley wrote this, as Ash has the same characterization and "voice" as he did from the Hack/Slash crossover a decade ago.

Speaking of the passage of time, back when this series was first announced, I personally asked Tim Seeley if there were going to be any connections to other AOD books (curious if he was going to build off Ash and Sonja's previous meeting in Prophecy, or if it was going to be something new), and he said it was going to be a sequel to Army of Darkness Forever. Now, for those of you who may have forgot or didn't read it, the "present day" in Army of Darkness Forever was 1993. In this series, the present day is... well... the present day. There's no mention or allusion to the events of Forever, Ash has a smartphone, and even talks about looking up old girlfriends on social media. So does that mean Ash is in his mid-60s and just looks like he's in his 30s? Seeley, I get that you don't care about maintaining Hack/Slash's continuity anymore, but at least have the decency not to say this series is part of something when it works completely fine as a standalone.

Anyway... besides that, it's the usual "first issue of a crossover" that we've seen a dozen times over the years... Ash shows up in (INSERT OTHER FRANCHISE)'s location, gets into a scuffle with (HEROIC CHARACTER FROM OTHER FRANCHISE) because of a miscommunication, and by the end of the issue, they realize that they have to team-up to fight the Deadites.

The art is... alright, I guess. Far from the worst, but not quite the best (in my opinion).

I give it a 4.5/10. Not bad, but it gets points off for being the usual crossover set-up and false continuity advertising.
EDIT: Here is Cédric Poulat's 616 Comics limited edition cover for issue one:

AOD&ED Comics will be doing a live interview with artist Jim Terry on April 25th, 2025. Terry is known for several collaborations with Tim Seeley... including (the ongoing? the upcoming?) Red Sonja vs Army of Darkness.

According to Dynamite's socials, the physical copies of Red Sonja vs. Army of Darkness #1 will be on shelves next week: April 30th, 2025.

Solicitations for Red Sonja vs. The Army of Darkness #4 are out! Release date is July 2nd (but given how Dynamite's current release schedule has been, we'll just have to see...)
This issue: The Deadites have infected Red Sonja! Now, the She-Devil with a sword turns here demon eye towards the unwitting Ash in a battle to the death!
Written by Tim Seeley and featuring art by Jim Terry, our series features covers by Seeley, Bjorn Barends, Tom Raney and Nikkol Jelenic!

Murderous Deadite unicorn is a fun twist.

Red Sonja vs AOD #2 came out this week. It's a very "letting the two characters talk"/set-up issue with two major action scenes: the fight at the castle (continued from where #1 left off) and the fight with the Deadite Unicorn, which was surprisingly gory and gruesome (which makes me wonder of MGM is loosening up on the "keep it PG-13" rule Tony Fleecs told me about). Seeley also referenced Army of Darkness Forever this issue, with Ash stating he fought the Deadites in 2093, but I already did my rant about that in my review for the first issue.

This series is leaning very heavily into Red Sonja's world and mythos, which again, I know very little about. I know that Seeley drew heavily upon the original Marvel Comics iteration of the character, and that really shows with some research I did after reading this issue. For the curious, Sonja's fondness for unicorns was something that was established in the very first issue of her 1977 solo series, in which she saves a unicorn and nurses it back to health after it had it's horn stolen by thieves. We also meet a character called Vassilisa in this issue, who originates from Sonja's third Marvel series (and has surprisingly never been used in any Dynamite book before).

Overall rating: not bad. 7 out of 10.

@MCT28 please post the virgin covers when you find them. I was only able to find one on Previews World for some reason.

They're on there, you just gotta know how to play with the url on there. For example, take this:
And then keep adding one to the number at the end, so it would read "JUN250156", and then ""JUN250157" and so forth. Just keep increasing by one to keep going. All the related covers to a book are grouped together, so eventually you'll run out and just roll on to whatever the next Dynamite book in the catalog is.
