Re: Army of Darkness/Evil Dead Comic Discussion Thread!
@ Elise - me too! And I'm ridiculously excited for the next arc.
@ Swofty - nope, I just keep an eye on Dynamite's official website and the comic's Tumblr tags. Plus I'm so excited about this arc I want folks to be aware of what's up!
Re: Army of Darkness/Evil Dead Comic Discussion Thread!
Thank you! :bigsmile
Preview pages for #6, which comes out this week, are up!
Spoilers:
Have I ever mentioned how awesome it is that these comics are building on the character's interaction with one another? I love Wiseman John's probing of Ash's feelings over his family, and the flashback was adorable without being saccharine (Also aww, Ash's mom in this 'verse looks a look like Ellen's version of Cheryl, I hope they keep them being siblings canon).
Also, I hope Ash gets his hand back from the AOD, because he's the sort of character who might accidentally slice himself with his hand-sword while scratching his nose.
Annual reactions:
Ehh, it was okay - I loved the art style, I liked the IDEA of Ash chasing witches throughout time, and his interaction with his various steeds throughout time was wonderful. Ash being stuck on a boat of ex-prostitutes headed to the new world and a nunnery, which ACTUALLY references a historical event? Unique idea, interesting execution.
But yeesh, it followed the same format over and over again.
1: Ash is zapped to a new world.
2: He learns something about the witch he's following and is confronted by several hot-to-trot ladies.
3: He mounts a steed and finds the witch.
4: Puns puns puns while witch is dispatched.
5: He almost gets some but is zapped to the next adventure.
It's a tad repetitive and - if I may be just a bit pedantic - he doesn't even act differently as he gets the various parts of his soul returned to him. If you were missing parts of your soul, shouldn't you be more merciless? But nope -it's goofy throughout.
#5 Reactions:
Everything. Is awesome.
Ash killing the giant felt premature (I wish they'd dragged it out longer) but everything else was beyond golden.
Re: Army of Darkness/Evil Dead Comic Discussion Thread!
He's being FAR too hard on himself; he's easily one of the best artists the series has ever had.
Spoiler-cutting the cover art of the second issue of arc, got this from Elise, who found it on the artist's Tumblr; August solicitations haven't been updated on Dynamite's website, and when they do I'll link you guys to the variant cover! By Francesco Francavilla

I totally agree althought Bolton is pretty amazing too.

I have mixed feelings on Bolton; I like a lot of his work but sometimes I can tell too easily which stills or publicity shots he used as reference material and it sucks me out of the storyline.
My favorites in order at this point would be Bradshaw, Jason Craig, this arc's Nacho T, and Bolton. The only art I've ever hated was the art for the From the Ashes/Long Road Home arcs.
@Swofty - Hmm, that's be pretty interesting - I think Moore writing AOD might take it down too dark a road. Maybe put him in charge of an alt verse based on the original ending?
And here's the alternate cover for issues #2, art by Lucio Parrillo AND Jae Lee:
...Sheila looks just like Princess Leia in the top one.
Re: Army of Darkness/Evil Dead Comic Discussion Thread!
@MaidOfKandar I agree it would get darker with Moore writing an Army of Darkness adaption. I've always been at the first half of our trilogy and you are more enthusiastic about the second half. I'd enjoy a darker AOD remake myself as a change :wink .... because it's Evil Dead innit!? :bigsmile
Re: Army of Darkness/Evil Dead Comic Discussion Thread!
Heh, that's true - IDK why that is for me personally, but that tends to be true! It'd sure be fun; I think the darkest an AOD adaption's ever gotten would be several of the storylines the comics tackled.
Re: Army of Darkness/Evil Dead Comic Discussion Thread!
PFt, well Jake, you never know - it might turn out fine this time. Especially because the bride in this case is
Sheila.
Cover Art for Ash Gets Hitched #4:

There will also be a one-shot comic specially done for October:
In Convention Invasion, Ash will "team up with three convention goers" to protect Comic Con and all of New York from a Deadite invasion when a wizard cosplayer "takes his role a little too far."
Steve Niles confirmed on his Tumblr that this is going to be the last segment of the story he'll be writing; there's no writer attached to the one-shot comic. I'm curious and anxious to find out who'll be taking over for him or if the series will end here - maybe we'll get word at Comic Con. At the very least, I hope they'll retain Nacho's services. The issues aren't selling that badly, and the comic seems to consistently be one of the few Dynamite titles to make the top 300 comics sold in the country in a consistent basis.
And closing with an interesting Ash Gets Hitched spoiler:
Sheila announces she's pregnant in the first issue; that's only the second time Dynamite's given or attempted to give Ash offspring in one of their series. The first time was in the second Xena/AOD crossover.
I have no idea how I feel about this turn of events, but here are my feelings on the writers they've selected to participate in the arc:
* Niles: The best writer the series has ever had, besides the writer of the Dark Horse Freddy/Ash/Jason series. Totally and utterly surprised me with how good he and the series are.
* Serrano: Started the Hail to the Queen arc strongly, but totally biffed everything once
Lady Ash was revealed to be a pawn in the demons-versus and the multiple realities were thrown at us with no rhyme or reason
. If he's bringing the same sort of talent he brought to issue #8 of that arc, I'm behind his inclusion. But I'm not behind the dude who let the series devolve into a confusing morass that required the Niles reboot in the first place.
* Kuhoric: Shop Til You Drop Dead is one of the series' better arcs, but he also wrote the terrible first AOD vs Re-Animator crossover
seriously: why would you write a crossover between the two series and then have Ash barely meet Herbert?
. He's also responsible for the creation of Sugarbaby, who could have been a great character but instead devolved into a Miss Fanservice type who basically did nothing but wear thongs and squint at the reader (I have no problems with sexy female characters dressing sexy, but I want them to at least have personality and an attitude).
* Raicht: Probably the worst of the lot. His "Home Sweet Hell" arc was really funny, but he biffed it with Hellbillies and Deadnecks, which led into the terrible League of Light arc.
* Cullen Bunn, the new headwriter, is an unknown quantity to me. He's written Deadpool, which is a step in the right direction for Dynamite to take the series (if you're any good at Deadpool's cracky randomness then you ought to be able to grasp a Raimi movie).
So basically, I just wish they'd stuck with Niles. I know the sales haven't been sellouts since the first issue (which I blame on the first issue's flaws, to be honest), but his work has been consistently right for an Army of Darkness comic.
Re: Army of Darkness/Evil Dead Comic Discussion Thread!
First covers for Army of Darkness. Which is being rebooted back to issue one, I guess; covers in order by Gabriel Hardman, Tim Seeley, Walter Flanagan and Jaw Shaw.
...Ok, the last one made me laugh, but this looks like a painfully stupid idea. IDK why Dynamite feels the need to panic and reinvent the wheel every ten issues ever since League of Light ended, but a drastic setting reboot didn't work for the LOL issues, and it won't work in this case. It's a shame we have to shift from the best AOD comic in recent memory to generic "lulz Ash in space" BS that every single comic book does.
Quoth new head writer Cullen Bunn:
âAsh is kind of the ultimate screwball knucklehead, and he really has no business being the âChosen Oneâ in the battle against ultimate darkness. Thatâs what makes him such a compelling underdog,â says Bunn, âWith this new series, weâre taking the âfish out of waterâ storyline to the next level, because not only is Ash fighting the Deadites, heâs doing so in the depths of space! With such a strange set-up, it might be easy to think that this is a big departure from what weâve seen before, but my goal has been to make this âfeelâ very much like it belongs in the same family as the source material, even though the setting is so vastly different.â
Re: Army of Darkness/Evil Dead Comic Discussion Thread!
I can't tell which one was the Walt Flanagan cover so I can only guess it was the E.T. one? (you've listed 5 names but there's 4 covers) .. Walt Flanagan is/was an inspiration to comedy director Kevin Smith due to Kev's pe-fame friendship with Walt and Walt getting him into comic books when they were kids ... "I'm faster than Walt Flanagan's dog!" being a slacker mantra in the viewaskewniverse 90's, included in the film Mall Rats, and as a push button recorded statement on the Jason Mewes inaction figure not to mention the comic book that came with it and toy dog with stoner boner (don't ask!) ..
If the E.T. inspired (car flying across the moon for younger or less interested readers) cover is the Walt one it would make me chuckle because there was also an E.T. parody poster in the film Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, starring Ben Affleck who was shown to be starring in the film 'Moon Raper' .. poster gets destroyed ..... terrible film but I'm wondering if that's the same Walter Flanagan that's now designed this cover and it's a running private joke? ... Flanagan/Kevin Smith/Affleck/Mewes etc are hugely into comic books so I'm hoping so ...
