Ash vs Evil Dead Season 3 General Discussion Thread

Nice interview.  It cool to know there will be a little more characters development.  Except for...

...Kelly.  Season 1 = Badass, Season 2 = more badass, season 3 = more more badass....That's character development! (joking) I agree with Maid, there's something missing with this character, she's not enough vulnerable.  No back story except about her parent's death.  She's only here to bring more female audience to watch the show. Even if Lucy Lawless is totally badass and charismatic, you can't count her because she's associated with evil.  The character is a result of bad marketing strategy IMO.  Kelly's character could be much more than that.  They waste a great opportunity to make a great character.  A phoenix kind or story could have been great. But it's a bit too late.  Looks more T-Dog kind of story right now.

Broke story still makes me cringe

Well mark did want to open the characters up more this season, i wonder if that will happen with kelly, best way to add some vulnerability with her is with pablo and ash at this point, speaking of which there was glimpses of the vulnerable kelly from s1 in ep 3 when she was at the bar with pablo talking with him, the scene with linda at the asylum and giving pablo the pep talk at the asylum as well or in the finale with her and ash.

Her vulnerable side is there just hasn't really been showcased that much in favor of showcasing her badass side more and has been in the foreground for the first 2 seasons.

Now that mark is on, maybe we'll see him give kelly something to actually chew on this season instead of being groomed to be the next "ash" like craig was doing.

AND FYI everyone.

Dana and Rays interviews will be up tomorrow so even more info will be on the way, stay tuned !

Here's ray's interview and it sounds like pablo will be coming into his own this season big time plus, it sounds like ray is implying this small group that is coming in is going to shake things up with the main group's dynamics. But this is also ray santiago the same guy who played it straight last season on him being dead, so take the teasing with a big grain of salt.

Don't know when dana's interview will be up, but i'll be sure to post it when it arrives.

Here's another interview with ray, and i have to say a lot of stuff to digest from this one, gonna post this 1 quote in particular that might peak your interests or might not, here's to hoping that they will stick the landing !

iH: With the departure of showrunner Craig DiGregorio, will the show have a different look or feel with his replacement, Mark Verheiden?

RS: Yeah, I think this season Mark’s definitely focusing on bringing sort of a deeper family level to the show, particularly with Ash as we evolve and uncover some of the spoilers that have been revealed for Season 3, Ash has a daughter. He really wanted to take the characters to a different level. We’ve seen them covered in blood, we’ve seen Bruce’s head up a dead bodies ass, so why not keep that going, but add the element that perhaps people weren’t expecting, which is to see a little bit more of heart in everybody. And to see Ash struggle to be the father that he never thought he could be. For Pablo, he’s going to continue his journey to become the hero that he never thought he could be. To step into the world of not just being a sidekick, but understanding that after going through death and this undeniable relationship with the Necronomicon, has given him. I think this season, the fans should expect the unexpected from Pablo. (He) sees things differently this season, and the Evil Dead world sees Pablo differently. And you’ll come to understand that once you see Season 3.

Alright, here's dana's interview and man they are really going all out this season on the character exploration, seems all three of the main characters will be having there own personal arc of sorts this season and brings to new light several new details plus announcing a new character joining the cast. (Sounds like to me that there going with the war vet with a hair trigger angle with kelly this season, which is very interesting approach to take her arc.)

Source : http://legionofleia.com/2017/08/interview-dana-delorenzo-ash-vs-evil-dead-season-3/

Here's some quotes from the interview.

Legion of Leia: By the end of Season 2, Ash and the town of Elk Grove are, I guess, copacetic with each other now. He’s no longer Ashy Slashy to them. And [Bruce Campbell] told me that he has taken over his father’s shop. Are you sticking around to help him out?

Dana DeLorenzo: If we know anything about Kelly, the last thing she’s going to do is work in a hardware store again. [Laughs] Kelly has always marched to the beat of her own drum; she’s not one of those conventional types. Ash and Pablo are living the dream — Ash has the store and Pablo has his “Fish and Chips” — they’re perfectly content. They’re living out their days eating turkey burgers and watching West Wing. Kelly, on the other hand, she’s a warrior without a war. Now that she’s found her purpose, it’s not easy to reintegrate herself back into society. She still hasn’t gotten the revenge by which she was so fueled. For her, she’s not satisfied until she has a string of canopy lights with Deadite heads all over her balcony.
Kelly actually goes to Detroit and becomes this bouncer at a bar. A very aggressive bouncer who clearly gets a little bit too angry over the smallest things; she’s always looking for that fight.
If you caught it at the end of Season 2, Kelly doesn’t look happy at the parade. She knows that there’s no way evil is going to be done, that it’s not going to come back. I think she’s just trying to stay in the fight because she wants to be ready when it does come back.
Shocker. Spoiler alert! Evil comes back. [Laughs] It comes back for Ash in such a ferocious, unexpected way with so many twists and turns. I’m excited for the audience to see Season 3.

LoL: Last question. Kelly and Pablo. I just talked about this with [Ray Santiago] about this. Will they get closer in Season 3?

DL: It’s a bit of a roller coaster. Kelly shows up with a new friend named Dalton [played by Nicholas Brown], who has ties with Sumeria and has the whole history. They are very much kindred spirits because Dalton is on the same level as Kelly in a lot of ways. It does cause an interesting sort of rift between Pablo and Kelly until the stakes get raised even higher. And then you see what happens when push comes to shove. I can say that it goes through every emotion on every level, and I’m very excited to see fans’ reaction to it.

Sounds like to me that there going with the war vet with a hair trigger angle with kelly this season, which is very interesting approach to take her arc. Plus holy shit, the turmoil between pablo and kelly will be very interesting to see play out, hopefully it's handled well enough.

I can't believe were actually going to see the fish and chips truck this season, just wow. AHAHA yes!

Alright, i'm taking my leave...I AM BUSHED

Well...I read the interview and unfortunately, I don't really see the : "They are really going all out this season on the character exploration" your speaking about for Kelly.

They just put more emphasis on her thirst for revenge and the "warrior" image.   She's now a bouncer who want to fight everybody!? ahah! what a joke!  Give the role to Charlize Theron or Michelle Rodriguez for god sake and I will believe in it.  They can just look like warriors without acting at all.  Did they want to turn Kelly into a Wolverine kind of character? Sorry but bad idea and wrong actress.   They just bring back the love interest /jealousy game between Pablo and Kelly.  (Which they totally forget about in S2) This is unfortunately nothing new.  This kind of story must end in S3.

Coming back with more thoughts; the most interesting bit of press out of the ihorror interview with Ray is that he states the show will either be on in Fall or in early January.  With there being no press push this late into August, I'm guessing the January date is way more likely.  We don't even have a trailer yet, and if it were coming out in Sept/October we'd have one.  If they premiere it in early November they'll have the same problems they had before.

There's two worrisome things to note here: if it's in January, that means they're going to have to go into a promo cycle in November and December, which means they'll have fewer public eyes on them (The Holiday rush will mean no one will care about anything that doesn't involve tinsel, menorahs or snow).  They could be testing to see if the show works better in a mid-season slot.

The other is again the bugaboo of the football season, which will be even more heated up by January.  If they start the weekend after New Year's Eve then they're going to be playing half the season out against crucial play-off games, and even against the SuperBowl, as I stated earlier.  I have to give Starz credit for trying but I don't know if this is going help them at all.  Ray's statements seem to suggest they're definitely looking for a ratings bump here.

I'll legit be in damn near tears if this show gets canceled. Easily my favorite show and I've wanted more Ash for so many decades...

With the show having so much stuff in the way of action figures and merchandising, good physical media sales, etc you would think that would be enough to keep the show going for at least the five seasons. Not sure what Lionsgate is expecting but other then Ash VS Evil Dead and American Gods, I feel there is nothing worth my time on Starz. Especially for the high price they charge for Starz.

As for season 3, the interviews all sound pretty great. Sure there are a few things I could always nitpick but I'm genuinely hyped and personally I feel like the show, despite some glaring issues, has just been a ton of fun if nothing more then to see Bruce Campbell back as Ash. Blu-Ray.com gave the season 2 Blu-Ray a pretty good review as well.

I really wish more people were willing to give this show a chance but as it stands now, it's not looking to good I guess or so media outlets seem to indicate.

I meant that statement for all three characters this season, not just her.

Don't know where you got the idea at that it's a "wolverine" or warrior image i see it more as "Solider who just got back from the war and is having a hard time adjusting back into society" angle and is lashing out to well get that feeling again of being there or simply put severe "PTSD". Plus there seems to be more to it then just a jealousy game there,it seems like kelly will be causing a bit of tension between her,ash and pablo bringing in this new friend of her's with her trying to be the leader and calling the shots that could lead to some interesting moments that could lead to it all blowing up in her face. And i have a feeling the bouncer angle might be a joke in of a itself so who know's, don't really buy it either but i think that's the point  :P

Anyway's, it sounds like to me there finally giving dana and the other two something to really dig into and do this year with there characters besides just "One liner, shoot deadite, crack a kinky joke here" i'm extremely happy to hear that we will be exploring more of pablo and kelly's relationship a bit more this season, the deal between them was as you said was completely forgotten about in s2 and we only got a few tid bit scenes with them in that whole season, im just glad to see there will be some focus on that this season.

It's interesting that there will be some turmoil between the three of them going into this ultimate battle with evil, can't wait to see how that will play out.

As for the s4 talk, if this is "THE" season they go out on,at least there going out on a interesting/risky note then what Craig had in the mind for s3. Looking forward to seeing how all these character arc's will play out before the seasons over with.

JMO RE the bugaboo of Kelly's character

It kind of feels like they seem to be flattening her even more this season; they were building toward her being angry and a frustrated warrior, but this is all they've had her do for seasons - being pissed off, beating the shit out of things, curse, rinse and repeat.  I know it's Evil Dead, but Pablo, Ash and Ruby are all deeper characters than she is at this point.

I don't know - they want the story of Kelly to be one of her learning how to be independent - but she's never really BEEN dependent, y'know?

Also, after ignoring it for an entire season (besides her being worried about him during the book manifestation sequences), I have to ask why they're bringing back the Pablo/Kelly romance stuff.  I'm fine with it if it's built up decently, but they're going to have to convince me that the new guy isn't a Lacey-like canard/unnecessary distraction.  They should've been building it up steadily last year instead of ignoring it wholesale for months.

It sort of sounds like

The evil gets partially stirred up through this dude and Kelly's level of maladjustment to the 'normal' (IE illusory) world.

@Joe

It's interesting to me that they're hinting this could work as a series finale on top of being a season finale.

I'm gonna personally put the blame on craig for kelly's lack of depth as a character, he could have built off what was there in s1 with pablo and her but decided to stick it in the foreground for s2 and focused more on well, "kinky sex jokes and Gorey set pieces" and also focused more on grooming up kelly to be ash's daughter subtly throughout season 2 rather then actually giving her any depth like he did with pablo, ash and ruby. she has kinda gotten the short end of the stick in terms of character depth, and whats bad about this is that she started out just fine in s1 and had a great build up throughout that season, before craig went lazy with her in s2 just so he could fast track her to being ash's daughter. *End Rant*

Anyway's, i'm just happy/relieved to hear that mark is going to focus in on this aspect that was in s1 this season, hopefully it will be a loose end that's get's tied off and maybe this will finally give her some depth to her character. Plus dana did mention that it's going to be "a bit of a rollarcoaster" emotionally for the both of them, so it makes me wonder if mark won't be doing more with her this season character wise. Ray did mention as well that mark was taking these characters to different levels this season so here's hoping that is what he intends to do.

Yeah i also found ray's finale comparison to be very interesting as well. i'm noticing a very big pattern here with these interviews this year and that seems to be a focus on a big grand story and character focus this year and how there hyping the final two episodes as well is very intriguing.

The weird thing about Craig RE Kelly's character is that she's his clear favorite, to the point where he was going to basically turn the mythology upside down so she could be a 'rightful heir to Ash's throne.  I can kind of see what they were trying to build up (her being so angry about what's happened to her that she gets reckless and needs to learn to cool down to become an efficient warrior), but they seem to be taking it a different direction (she's so angry that her anger's what makes her a great fighter).  They just need to address it.  Have her look at a picture of her mother every now and again.

(They frankly also should've done that with the Chet and Cheryl stuff.  It's literally two seconds of footage and a reaction shot and it would have improved things so much).

You really hit the nail on the head RE her - they need to humanize and ground her more, and they were doing fine establishing that her mom's death and her own possession had traumatized her to the point where she said "Fuck this, I'm going to kick ass!"  They really dumbed her down a lot in season 2, and were probably trying to make her snarlier to match her attitude up with Ash's.

They could've done pretty well making Pablo her Achilles heel but they missed so many opportunities when it comes to that (Why was she downstairs with Linda during Pablo's exorcism when she should be upstairs instead of Lacey?  That always bothers me in hindsight.).  It almost feels like 1 and 3 will be more cohesive with one another than two.

If they're

Going to be anything like Six Feet Under, the show ended by showing the deaths of each of its characters.  They could go that route, which would be final but undoable (no one stays dead in this franchise, and with time travel at work...)

Very interesting interview podcast with the vfx producer and she reveals a interesting detail that they shot with 4k cameras this year for s3.

Well, they at least refer Kelly as a "warrior" two time during the interview.  I thought of Wolverine because he's always beating the shit out of everybody and got anger management issue. It's a bit exaggerate as comparison, but whenever there's a scene in a bar with Wolverine there's a fight.  I don't even see her as "soldier" because she's still green and act like a prepubertal child.   I think Maid is spot on about Kelly's character.  I couldn't express it better. (Maybe because my english is limited ;)

AvED Season 2 is currently the #8 DVD on Amazon and the #1 horror release.

More AVed mythos spoilers from Bruce in this EW Article

“We’re hoping it will be a game-changer,” teased Campbell of season 3, whose premiere date has yet to be made public. “We felt it was time to explore a little more of Ash Williams’ myth, because he is foretold in an ancient book — this is not me, this is the character talking — and it was time to crack into that. He’s not just a loser in a trailer park. He is foretold. So, why? Why him? We start to get some answers, and things get completely crazy — in episode 10, hopefully people will pick their jaw up off the floor. That’s what we’re going for. Nothing will be the same if we come back for season 4. And yet, if they don’t bring us back, I think we’ve done a nice little ba-dink.”

....I'm getting less and less secure in the notion of season 4 happening.

Yeah well, they do this every year with the ending for each season, so i'm not surprised that bruce is wording it that way but hey at least they came prepared in case of cancellation but now would not be the time to close up shop just yet just because of this interview, we still got a whole season ahead of us plus the sells of the s2 blu-ray and dvd to factor in for a renewal.

And to me it looks like the blu ray and dvd are selling well enough right now that it might just make lionsgate raise a eyebrow towards starz in renewing it.

It ain't over till it's over !

Yeah Bruce has done this since season one with the doom and gloom. I mean he's right, if people are not watching then it will get canceled. That being said there is a strong defense that this show still has some money to be made:

-The physical sales are always really good for this show.
-This show has a LOT of merchandising. Many shows do not. I mean the Evil Dead universe sells LOTS of action figures and props galore.
-I was under the impression that Sam Raimi was friends with the CEO of Starz. Not sure how that is now that Lionsgate owns Starz.
-The ratings are not amazing but I feel like they could be a lot worse and I heard before that the streaming "long term" ratings for at least other seasons were pretty solid stuff.
-Lionsgate is known for horror. I would think Evil Dead would be one of their most profitable horror movie universes (they own Evil Dead 2 rights I think, maybe Evil Dead 1, not sure on this). So you would think there would be money still to be made off of this show if nothing more then in the long term.

It would just seem really weird for them to cancel Ash VS Evil Dead before we get the 5 seasons but hey, anything can happen. I don't know what Starz is expecting here from any show but the above are great points and I feel like all of the above has to make them a decent amount of cash even if this isn't getting huge huge ratings.

Got a new article here from gamespot with new quotes from the 3 main cast members and there's some very interesting quotes in here.

Source : https://www.gamespot.com/articles/ash-vs-evil-dead-season-3-what-we-know-so-far/1100-6452777/

"Season 3 gets even more grounded and we raised the stakes for the drama," DeLorenzo explained. "We're not just hitting the same notes, so to speak. Everyone on the show is incorporating all three films of the franchise. We’re taking all of that and moving forward."

At its core,
AvED is both a horror series and a comedy series. But stories have to progress and it sounds like Mark Verheiden has steered the Starz series into new, unexpected waters. "Mark really wanted to focus on the core of the characters and the heart of who they are," Ray Santiago explained. "We're introducing this other level of family. What would it be like for Ash to lose? To really lose all of the family that he had? And, you know, what happens if you can’t turn back time? Where does that leave Ash? That’s what Mark was focusing on: He’s taking this novelty show to that next place many fans won't see coming."

Bruce Campbell may have put it best by saying
Ash vs. Evil Dead Season 3 will lead up to "an unexpected boiling moment." As vague as that may sound, it seems like the new episodes will be building to one very intense climax. "Expect the unexpected this season," warned Santiago. "We're bringing out everything that you could possibly imagine. We have one of the biggest season finales that we've ever had. It’s going to be epic. People are going to be laughing and crying. They're not going to see it coming!"

The more i keep hearing the cast talk about this upcoming season, the more i keep thinking why the hell wasn't mark brought on for the first two cause this guy keeps ticking off all the list of stuff i've wanted from this show that the show hasn't quite delivered on yet. It sound's like to me his doing some very interesting shit with the character's for this third season and i can't wait to see how it plays out for each of them.

Top Bottom
