exactly! Its performances are what people really think are cheesy. the movie itself is actually pretty damn creepy, and makes you feel as if you're in the cabin with the characters, going through the whole night with Ash.

When the characters are arguing in the cabin and a handheld is going around them, it almost has a documentary feel to it. Like The Blair Witch Project, only 20 years earlier.
Of course this was done more out of necessity than for of any artistic reason, but the result is the same either way.
