Hello everyone,

My name is Alex. I am new here to the forum, and am a life-long Evil Dead fan. I am also a PhD student in Indiana, working in horror genre studies and technophobias, and am currently conducting field research into horror fandom and online fan communities related to the genre. The Deadites seem to be a close-knit community, and I've taken a great interest in the dedication, creativity, and hard work that seems to be poured into this and other related fan sites (and with the current documentary being produced, this notion appears to be validated).

I was wondering if anyone on this forum would care to comment on their love for Evil Dead, and what they find about the online space (specifically) contributes to the experience of being a fan. How do the online forums and connectedness of the web enable you to practice and express your love of these films and this genre? Any comments or contributions you have would be much appreciated, and can be posted directly to this topic. Posts may be used for my final presentation of research, and while there is no compensation, your responses are deeply valued. They will also remain anonymous.

Thank you for your time, and I hope to hear from you soon!

Best,

Alex

Hi Alex and welcome to Deadites ..

I'd be happy to get involved in your research because I've done two of these myself, the first in '90 and the second in '01 .. I'll shoot you an email when I get the chance (because I'm working round the clock at the moment) .. in the mean time, see if you can find Fanalysis on Youtube, Bruce Campbell's mini documentary about fandom.  :)

edit: found it ..

Excellent! Thank you so much for the link/video. Looking forward to the rest of your reply.

Best,

Alex

A good discussion of my "fandom" is in the first teaser for the documentary, but as for online, I feel that it is the sharing of information, expression of fandom (fan art, etc) and debated discussions that really bring out the fans online.

( .. in the voice of Eric Cartman: SCREW YOU HIPPY!)

.... just kidding  :wink ... 100% what Elise just said and a little bit more ..

Going to forums is like talking face to face with horror fanatics it starts basically bringing up your favorite movies/moments in horror and generally bounces back n forth between the two or more like "that part in (insert film/character) where this happens was awesome" then goes to "oh yeah but have you seen this? this part was even better" n expand to someone not seein one or more of the things and the conversation spreads like fire to your other friends and the whole thing starts over and you learn a whole new director/producer that you've never heard of and become a die hard fan and spread that n so on n so forth...
I really enjoy this genre way more than any other in the world cuze you got the badasses who like action n people who like comedy but horror has all elements of every genre packed into one.
Hope my ramblings have given some incite to our little world i could go on n on but im sure no body wants to hear me gab forever lol..but hey good luck on your research always glad to help. :bigsmile

AshTray: your "ramblings" were great, and quite helpful; thank you! That interaction with other people, and the discovery of material in the genre beyond Evil Dead is what really fascinates me, and makes me proud to be a fan.

Right on, i woulda went more into detail cuze I'm a major horror fanatic. I eat, sleep, and live horror, like i play the guitar and keyboard(organ/synthesizer) n everytime without fail i automatically just play haunting horror score type music. Thats jes my music mood all the time lol n i love it. I also have been writing horror stories since like the 4th or 5th grade, i actually received a goosebumps R.L. Stein best youth story award for a lil page turner i turned in as a kid :roll
But yea like i said, always glad to help. Shoot me a personal message if ya have any specifics you wanna get a different point of veiw on too. I also happen to be the self proclaimed worlds greatest batfan(batman, not chiroptera lol) so hit me up fellow Alex n good luck on yer work.

(And now i sound like a major nerd....hahahaa)
