I always wondered if Sam Raimi or Tom Sullivan (or both) were influenced by the war crimes to make The Evil Dead's book be bound in human skin.

Ilsa Koch, labelled 'The Bitch of Buchenwald', a Nazi commandant of that concentration camp famously took skin, especially tattoed skin from her prisoners to use on all sorts of personal objects including a hairbrush and lampshades .. a book bound in human skin was also rumoured to have been recovered. Someone bought a human skin lampshade from a car boot sale:
