Evil Dead: The Game

Nvidia just posted exclusive footage of single player gameplay, and we get to hear Linda and Henrietta along with a strange sounding Evil Ash.

Alright, gonna give my rambling thoughts on the game now that i've sunk about a good whole two days into this closed beta on the xbox going on the third day.

And before anyone asks it seems safe to write reactions out for it from where i've seen elsewhere on the internet and i haven't seen Saber take down any written reactions to the game, they seem to only be targeting people who post screenshots or videos, so here i go!

From top to bottom, the people who made this game are mega fans, probably the best evil dead game yet, easily wipes the floor with the other games.

Let me list off my positives and negatives.

POSITIVES
- Combat in this game is really great, fluid fast and fun to do. Finishing blows you can do are really brutal as well!

- The Abilities,Skill Tree and Stat Boosts in this game is very in-depth and deep. There's a lot of characters and options to choose from for a main, i've mostly spent most of my time on this beta as Cheryl Willams, she has some pretty dope healing abilities that are very crucial in the final phase of the match when you are taking on both the dark ones and the demon player whose on your ass every step of the way.

- Driving around is pretty fun as well but it can get pretty wonky if there's lag issues but overall the driving handling is pretty fine in general.

- The Demon has a whole set of tools that really make the game more intense and hectic, from possessing players, setting traps in loot boxes (Mini Ashes,Ash's hand), trying to run you over with a car and summoning bosses. But it never feels overpowering as the survivor, it can go either way between both sides, very much feels like a very chaotic chess match.

-Well Optimized, the build i played runs pretty good for being on xbox one. Love it when a developer really pushes for optimization of their game.

-Each Character and Demon is very well represented and more fleshed out. Hell Ed from ED2 got some serious fleshing out for his character for this game. All the ashes actually feel like that ash from that part of the franchise, Bruce and the writers did a hell of a job bringing them back to life, specifically ED1 Ash. There's a lot of interesting tid bits from the voice lines you can gleam in game, think i heard AoD Ash going off about Sheila when he was downed once, pretty dope!

-The artwork in the collections menu is really awesome, reminded me of art from a table top horror board game.

-Soundtrack is pretty amazing as well, fits right in with the franchises previous scores.

-Great quality of life modes! You can play the regular Survivor vs Demon mode with 5 players or have 4 players vs a ai playing the demon OR you can play the mode solo with 3 bot survivors vs a ai bot, or a custom room where you can tweak the rules and play in a private match with friends. And there's single player missions as well!

NEGATIVES
-Matches can get a bit laggy and glitchy some times, but granted this is just a beta build. i imagine those problems will be fixed for the final build of the game.

-Lack of Facial animations for the characters, they blink and move their eyes, but there's a distinct lack of animations in terms of them getting hit, hurt or scared. Or just simple mouth movements when they are saying their dialog, but this is just a minor gripe in the grand scheme of things. the only one that really has any movement with their mouth ironic enough is Evil Ash.

-There was some bugs and glitches during my time with the game but like i said before, it's not the final build and it wasn't game breaking stuff either, if anything i was surprised by how well this build ran for a beta build, i imagine most of these issues will be fixed around release.

-Takes too long to pick up weapons or get into cars. hopefully this is tweaked in the final release.

FINAL THOUGHTS

If i had to sum up my 3 day experience with this game, it would be this.

The devs over at Saber Interactive have managed to create a game where it feels like you are playing out your very own Evil Dead Film in game form, they really nailed the down to the wire, chaotic, brutal non stop pacing of the films and tv show.

Especially when you are in the final phase of the match and you are trying to kill the dark ones and you have the demon player spawning it's minions all around you while the dark ones are attacking as well, it's very intense but man once you get the victory as the survivor, it's a very rewarding feeling.

If anyone has any questions about anything, i'm all ears.

Rob from BookOfTheDead.ws I've held off on getting too interested in this as it's primarily an online multiplayer game, and I detest multiplayer games with a passion. I did try Friday the 13th, played it a few times but it just gets ruined by idiots, plus you have a point in the future when the servers are shut down and a game is unplayable. Any more word on the single player missions, if any? That's the reason I would buy it, if at all.

Oh yeah, there's going to be a solo mode for survivors vs demon where you can just play with bots, plus there's going to be single player missions that pay homage to classic evil dead scenes and lore. You can see some of the footage from it in the post above my thoughts on the closed beta.

It's the single player missions with story elements which would be most interesting, otherwise it's just like a new skin for Dead By Daylight, same basic idea, different scenery. I play single player games to get away from other people!

A lot of people hated it, but I've always liked ED HTTK, simply as it was the first game (barring the C64/spectrum) in which you could be in the cabin, looking round, which I found amazing back in 2000.

I'm just gonna say this right now having played the game for a solid 2 days straight, it is nothing like dead by daylight at all. I'd say it's more of a mix-up of F13th's open world feel with the combat feeling more akin to a god of war/l4d/wwz feeling too it, it's brutal, fluid and to the point, plus there's way more main objectives to do and there's apparently going to be side objectives you can do as well in the match.

As for story elements, Professer Knowby is featured heavily in the game as a narrator, they use him quite effectively as the games guiding force for the survivor team and has some pretty interesting dialog, i imagine there's going to be some lost tapes you can collect in-game and listen too in the "extras" menu. I imagine that's probably going to be the side objectives during the matches is finding those tapes.

As for the single player missions, from the footage they showed in the video, there's dialog going on in it, so i imagine there's probably going to story elements going on in those missions that will have you do objectives with a story playing out during that mission, we'll see though.

The only comparison that i can think of that fits in line with dead by daylight would be it's leveling up system, but that's about it.

This was the artwork i was talking about a while back that was really good. I put the source for the one artist's working on this game underneath. Plus what's not mentioned here is his second ability. He can boost the stats of his teammates that are around him.

I think it's weird they won't show any extended gameplay.

There's gonna be extended gameplay shown towards the end of april, think around the 26th, they just recently filmed a press event where they brought in a bunch of game journalists and influencers to play the game and there will be a lot of footage dropped on the 26th.

But i'm just gonna say this having played the closed beta. The gameplay is awesome and it's gonna be worth the wait, they really captured the pacing of a evil dead film/show in game form to a tee, this was a passion project for everyone involved and it shows in every area of the game.

She doesn't look like Sarah Berry at all.

Yeah that's the big downer about her inclusion is that they couldn't get sarah berry on board to return, but the VA they got for annie does a great job bringing her character to life from what i experienced from the beta.

Info is trickling out slowly, and I have seen a lot of pics of people posing with Bruce... but very little talk about the game itself (other than technical stuff) which is kind of weird since we are a little more than a month away from the release date. The art for Ash and others has been on point, but it's a shame they couldn't get Sarah Berry back as Annie.

There was a lot of positive reception/gameplay info coming out of the closed beta that happened back in march that got people talking a lot, marketing is a bit slow right now for sure, but the word of mouth about the game since the beta happened has been pretty rapid. And as someone who got to try out the game early, it's gonna be worth the wait. :D
