Evil Dead Burn | Official Thread

I'm more positive on this than you are, but I agree with some of your points. It's frustrating that they are seemingly hiring these up-and-coming creative and passionate directors to... do again what already proved to work in 2013. The designs, the tone, the super serious gore that gets you hyperbolic quotes for the posters...

But I think it still could be great. Rise had these same issues, but it worked because of the themes and the characters. So I remain hopeful.
I don't know if it's been mentioned yet in this thread but ..

I'm not sure I like that there's a character being smacked over the head with a a heavy piece of shattered bathroom sink ala Evil Dead 2013. I'm into nods and in jokes but that's just a blatant rip off. Almost as bad as if they had a scene in this new trailer where and eyeball flies across the room and lands in someone's mouth. The shattered bathroom sink used as a weapon goes to far past just being a homage for me

Gotta say though, and maybe it's just me and a personal thing, but I hate when they lean too hard into Judeo-christian devil and hell stuff. I feel like deadites can be so much .ore interesting than that,AND it skews it too close to feeling like an Exorcist riff.

They're ancient Sumerian demons! They pre-decease Christianity!

So quick thoughts, positive, mixed and negative format

POSITIVES
- Yay! i can see things!

-The chaotic energy and grab you by your throat energy is here in full force in this trailer, i don't get a sense of any stoppage or breaks of levity from the chaos in this trailer which was sorely missing in Rise, here it looks balls to the wall on all fronts. Now that's evil dead in my book and i'm super happy this one looks like it's gonna be a super balls to the wall experience in the action department that was really lacking in Rise.

- No chainsaws! Switching over to a grass trimmer is a pretty interesting choice and i'm down to see how it's used in the film. Quite refreshing seeing that in the trailer.

- The grieving family story line could go over great, but that's all gonna hinge on the execution of the script. It's interesting the main theme of these new films so far has been about families or mother hood (Including 2013 on this one as well cause of David and Mia's story line). It's quite curious that was also the story line Ash was dealing with through out AvED as well. Food for thought on this point as to why this has been a lingering theme.

- The action, holy shit the action looks insane. After the pause and go pacing of Rise action, Burn looks to be correcting course on this aspect big time. Looks really damn good.

NEGATIVES

- While i am happy the camera work and chaotic/never breath energy is back, i am completely over the 2013 aesthetic, color palette and brutal tone, done with it. We had it in Rise, now this one. I really hope Wrath provides something different in the aesthetic/color palette department while still maintaining that brutal ED tone.

OBSERVATIONS (spoilers in this section)
Ok, color me crazy. But i think this is directly connecting with Rise because we've got the same pearl eyes from Rise and plus, that deadite that we saw at the start of Rise appears to be killing a fishermen effectively continuing that plot point from Rise in showing what happens to that deadite after killing all the people at that cabin. And i think that fishermen is the dad that gets possessed in the car and kick starts Evil Dead Burn's plot. I hope that means Beth is returning! Plus the "book" for this film has very direct 2013 imagery in it, starting to wonder if this isn't building up to something concretely connective and we might actually be heading towards some type of big event, maybe? I could be entirely wrong, but there's a lot of signs here from Rise and now this that seems to indicate they are working towards something, makes me wonder if that Bible that Sam and his brother Ivan were plotting out for this world is getting worked into these movies now. Plus another thing to point out, Studio Canal has the marketing rights for practically half the franchise now (except AOD). So it makes me wonder what's being built up to here through these various self contained stories we seem to be doing back to back now.

Just as i was finishing up writing this part of this post, i noticed this.

Holy shit, they really are doing it.

No wonder everything has felt like 2013 again, it's actually set in 2013's world, they are just continuing that visual language 2013 brought forth. That makes way more sense now.

FINAL THOUGHTS

After watching this trailer a few more times, i've warmed up too it, the main thing selling this movie to me is the story they've chosen, the balls to the wall action and the energy the camera work is providing. This may end up being better then Rise if it plays it's cards right in my book!

Interestingly enough...
Alyssa Sutherland made special post about passing the torch, and if you follow the link what she posted is there (for now) even though it says video may be broken... or removed.

Sorry to be a nerd but they're Kandarian demons resurrected by Sumerian incantations .. that's if Professor Raymond Knowby got it right .. which he possibly didn't now I think about it because he ended up as a pile of bones in the cellar ..

EXCELLENT POINT.

ETA: now I want to know how

the hell this rural house is that close to the lake where the other cabin is. Wouldn't the evil already be active because of Jessica's very existence there as a Jaws!Deadite?

You know, there were rumors floating around that...
Deadite Ellie comes back as a cameo.
But this came with the bogus "oil rig" leak, and a lot of people who went to the test screenings were quick to say that doesn't happen, and that...
Deadite Jessica was the only returning Rise character
Which the trailer has confirmed.
Apologize for deleting my original post, but when I went to post it I thought Alyssa's might have been deleted... but those ties between Rise and Burn have gotten people talking.

Here's the green band trailer and it answers a pretty big question

So the fishermen is not the dad, but just a random fishermen who Deadite Jessica kills. HOWEVER, it does seem like Deadite Jessica directly kickstarts the events of Evil Dead Burn by being run over by Alice's husband and causing him to wreck.

Nice. Can you find a better green band trailer in 1080p or higher quality?

To be fair, it seems to me that the discount Anton Yelching is talking about what his parents thought him and he's now using it as a shorthand to what's happening infront of him. Like you had the record with incantations made by Catholic(?) priests in Rise, but that doesn't mean the Demons themselves had anything to do with Christianity. It's just how the character interpret them.

100%. I think of it kind of like in Ash vs Evil Dead when Ash asks Baal where Pablo is, and Baal mentions most cultures have names they used for what he calls the netherworld like the Aztecs calling it Mictlan, Greeks Tartarus, and hell... but tells them their tiny little minds can't comprehend the dimension he now finds himself in. You tend to go with what you know.

So here's a question:

If Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert are hand picking these young directors to breath some fresh air into the Evil Dead franchise, are they also the ones telling them to basically do what already worked before?

Especially Tapert is a professional and experienced producer and I wouldn't hold it against him if his strategy would be to just keep doing what they did in 2013 because it made money, fans liked it, and also if all the movies in your franchise look and feel the same, then audiences already kinda know what to expect and will likely come back for a sequel.

The cynic in me also keeps asking to what extend the up-and-coming director thing is in an of itself a gimmick. Something they are doing because that's how the whole franchise got its start and because you can also control unexperienced directors better, which is something we've seen over and over again in lots of the MCU movies. The counterargument to that could be that the new Evil Dead movies are definitely far more interesting and innovative than the MCU ones, I guess partially because they can afford to be since no Evil Dead movie ever will need to make 500 million dollars just to break even. So I'm not really sure what to think, but I'm just dying to know what level of creative control do these directors really have while making these movies.
