Army of Darkness/Evil Dead Comics Discussion Thread!

Re: Army of Darkness/Evil Dead Comic Discussion Thread!

Dynamite is making my head roll, I have to remember to pre-order the Ash Gets Hitched series, the coffee table book, the one shot, 1992.1 and now Ash in Space. Jesus christ. At least I have Ash and the Army of Darkness pre-ordered.

I can't tell which one was the Walt Flanagan cover so I can only guess it was the E.T. one? (you've listed 5 names but there's 4 covers) .. Walt Flanagan is/was an inspiration to comedy director Kevin Smith due to Kev's pe-fame friendship with Walt and Walt getting him into comic books when they were kids ... "I'm faster than Walt Flanagan's dog!" being a slacker mantra in the viewaskewniverse 90's, included in the film Mall Rats, and as a push button recorded statement on the Jason Mewes inaction figure not to mention the comic book that came with it and toy dog with stoner boner (don't ask!) ..

If the E.T. inspired (car flying across the moon for younger or less interested readers) cover is the Walt one it would make me chuckle because there was also an E.T. parody poster in the film Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, starring Ben Affleck who was shown to be starring in the film 'Moon Raper' .. poster gets destroyed ..... terrible film but I'm wondering if that's the same Walter Flanagan that's now designed this cover and it's a running private joke? ... Flanagan/Kevin Smith/Affleck/Mewes etc are hugely into comic books so I'm hoping so ...

That's what I get for quoting Dynamite's press release directly :P  They haven't released one of the covers, edited the post to reflect it.

I'm glad they're at least using the license to its full, But it seems mostly to be because of the big Dynamite anniversary.  I hope they don't forget about it for a year if the space reboot flops.

ash in space? not read comics for years and trying to sell my collection.....but i so wanna read that!!!

Y'know, it's interesting how many people seem to be enthused about this.  I'm still disappointed, because AATOD/AGH has been pretty flawless as an arc thus far.

And here are the incentive covers for the release: all sketch/black and white:

Re: Army of Darkness/Evil Dead Comic Discussion Thread!

Dynamite is going into overdrive promoting the Ash in space arc (to the detriment of everything they're putting out in October/November; I'm despairing about ever getting my hands on the last two issues of Ash Gets Hitched, either the third issue is coming out this week or the series is cancelled).  In light of that:

An interview with Cullen Bunn at Bleeding Cool

Art process for Gabriel Hardman's cover.

They say there's a "positive buzz" about it, but it's drawing no more excitement than I usually see for an AOD comic.

Re: Army of Darkness/Evil Dead Comic Discussion Thread!

FINALLY got an update on the Ash Gets Hitched situation; it's been bumped forward to October.

So Dynamite's release schedule now looks like:
Oct.15th: Ash Gets Hitched #3
Oct.22nd: Ash and the AOD TPB
October 29th: Convention Chaos

November TBD:
Ash Gets Hitched #4 (Conclusion)
Army of Darkness 1992.1
Art of Army of Darkness

December TBD:
AOD #1

February TBD:
Ash Gets Hitched TPB

Re: Army of Darkness/Evil Dead Comic Discussion Thread!

Thanks for your continuing updates MaidOfKandar  :thumbup ... please warn us if you ever plan to take a holiday!  :wink

Re: Army of Darkness/Evil Dead Comic Discussion Thread!

Whole bunch of news afoot!

First of all, preview pictures for Ash Gets Hitched #3 are Out, as is the issue itself.  Here, too, is an interview with Duane Swierczynski who wrote Convention Invasion.

Dynamite has also released preview pages for AOD 1992.1 and AOD #1.  I feel as if the art's kinda...pedestrian? IDK.

In even bigger news, Dynamite's putting out Gold Elite Signature Series versions of Tim Seeley and Walter Flanagan's covers.

And here are the covers with variants for AOD #2:

Re: Army of Darkness/Evil Dead Comic Discussion Thread!

That last 'Ash in eyeball' art's nice  :cool

Re: Army of Darkness/Evil Dead Comic Discussion Thread!

That's definitely my fave of the lot so far, though Seeley's take is also pretty good (Seeley can draw Ash; too bad he's pretty terrible at writing him :/)

Re: Army of Darkness/Evil Dead Comic Discussion Thread!

The Art Adams covers for AOD #1 have finally been released!  Thanks to Elise for catching and reblogging this news:

Bleeding Cool also has revised art for the AOD #1 introduction. Oh look, they fixed Sheila's hair :p

Re: Army of Darkness/Evil Dead Comic Discussion Thread!

AOD 1992.1 has been released, and here are some previews of the Kuhoric story.
I'm amused that I can pretty easily and instantly recognize all of his storytelling hallmarks (an interest in Ash's job, anthropomorphized Nec that Ash loves to torture...).

Also, it's kinda awkward that they released this a week before Ash Gets Hitched #4, since this issue continues from that conclusion.

Re: Army of Darkness/Evil Dead Comic Discussion Thread!

That's what I thought.

Re: Army of Darkness/Evil Dead Comic Discussion Thread!

The tough part is that the Bunn story does indeed drop us right in the middle of Ash post-AGH-plot twist, and it makes no sense unless you've read it.

He also calls Sheila his wife, which will be a spoiler for some.

Speaking of, here are previews for the end of Ash Gets Hitched, and Army of Darkness Issue #3's covers:

Also, Dynamite released the entire Prelude to this arc on Bleeding Cool, as published in AOD 1992.1, and Preview panels for the second issue.  There's also previews for the first issue, which came out last week.  And this interview with Cullen Bunn.

As for Bunn's take on Ash, I'm not wholly impressed yet.  It's very stereotypical, which is fine but not the stuff Niles produced, which was nuanced.

Re: Army of Darkness/Evil Dead Comic Discussion Thread!

Digging the very last one!

Re: Army of Darkness/Evil Dead Comic Discussion Thread!

I still wish they hadn't dropped NT as the series' main artist - he knows how to draw Ash, has a good grasp on the series in general and just plain gets the dimensions  of the series.

Speaking of Tenorio, he drew GameStop's exclusive cover for AOD #1, for those who like gathering exclusives and rarities:

There's also this exclusive cover by John Rivett, done for Heros Haven:

Re: Army of Darkness/Evil Dead Comic Discussion Thread!

Previews for issue two are out!  IDK how something can feel fresh and like a rehash at the same time, but here we are.
