Army of Darkness/Evil Dead Comics Discussion Thread!

RE: Army of Darkness/Evil Dead Comic Discussion Thread!

:D This is one of the first major projects I loaned a hand to on-site to (wrote some blurbs and some general organizational help). Glad to see it bloom!

@EvilStarscream - I'm kind of excited for that idea, if only because the HTTQ arc biffed the opportunity to have more fun with the whole Nazi Deadite theme.

Looks like Space Goat Productions is in it for the long haul then which reminds me that they have one of the issues waiting for pick up!

Ahh this looks so cool!

RE: Army of Darkness/Evil Dead Comic Discussion Thread!

Sketchbook's also coming out in February. That's 3 ED2 comics and a trade collection for that month. Nice.

Guess Ash didn't cut off his hand in this alternate universe.

RE: Army of Darkness/Evil Dead Comic Discussion Thread!

^ [spoilers] This Ash is a clone, which Annie conjured up from the other Ash's (who was sent back in time) severed hand. Therefore the clone has both hands, for some reason.
Tho I'm not sure if this Hitler one-shot will be connected to the B-DBD comic. Probably is.

I wonder if the reason they went with a two-handed Ash is to differentiate from the AOD comics. They refer to the Necronomicon as just "The Ex Mortis" in this comic series too.

RE: Army of Darkness/Evil Dead Comic Discussion Thread!

To add flesh onto that, this Ash also has a mental link with Annie because she used her own blood to help conjure him.

I wonder if the artist was influenced by this old Sinclair 48K art cassette case ? ... I love it either way ..

RE: Army of Darkness/Evil Dead Comic Discussion Thread!

Revenge of Hitler!? What the hell! is this? Deadsnow? Kung Fury? How could this be related to Evil Dead? Ash is a doppelganger and Annie is not really Dead!? She came back form hell i guess...Sorry I'm not buying this.

I bought the first serie of Army of Darkness comics and the movie adaptation from John Bolton then I stopped. When Ash went into a Star Wars theme with a CPU Necronomicon that was enough for me. I think the movie adaptation is great. In many ways this comic is better than the movie IMO.

RE: Army of Darkness/Evil Dead Comic Discussion Thread!

@Sutter Cane - She actually ends up not dying and going to hell with the cabin intact, then escaping the place with her clone.

My advice is to try out Ash and the Army of Darkness; it's the best thing Dynamite's done!

Yeah I'm really not digging these Evil Dead 2 comics. I haven't read all 3 of the Annie story one, but the first 2 have just been "meh" for me. I feel like the story is weak and the art is subpar compared to the Dynamite comics. I also can't stand how they just call the necronomicon the Ex-Mortis, I figure it's a licensing issue, but it just doesn't sit right with me.

I still need to read the third issue; I liked most of what they're doing with Annie's POV but the whole 'Ash and Annie have a mental link because blood magic/Ash is unpredictable emotionally because he was created when Annie was ovulating*' thing is kinda boggleworthy.

* No, I am not making this storyline up, it's an actual plot point.

RE: Army of Darkness/Evil Dead Comic Discussion Thread!

Apparently the Dynamite comics humble bundle for AOD was very successful, which lead to Bleeding Cool interviewing Tim Seeley.

Interestingly enough, there are no AOD issues listed for pre-order from Dynamite at least through March; we'll see if this encourages them to publish more.

RE: Army of Darkness/Evil Dead Comic Discussion Thread!

I got some of the Humble Bundles myself. I have ony read the first Ashes to Ashes so far.

I kinda liked the art, (although the Artists rendition of ladies is ridiculously cheesecake.) but I wasn't too sure of the whole
Back to the Future style retreading of events from Evil Dead 2. It was an interesting twist, for sure, but didn't entirely fit if you consider the events of that film. (And right at the end, it kind of went a bit Time Bandits, with the coming of the cavalry.) And much as I find time travel paradoxical shenanigans fun, I'm not sure I really want it within The Evil Dead.

Using time travel to get Ash to a certain time frame (like in Army of Darkness and the Fistfull of Boomstick game): fine. Going back on his own timeline, etc, not so much. Leave the timeline of the films events alone, and go on from there, is my take on it.

While there has always been a bit of goofiness in the last two films (which is not a bad thing) i felt the Ashes to Ashes comic went a bit too far.

It will be interesting to see how the other comics fare.

RE: Army of Darkness/Evil Dead Comic Discussion Thread!

Dynamite might be taking a break, and letting Space Goat have some of the spotlight.

I'm honestly not sure where I want them to go. When they rebooted the series with Ash and the AOD, it was a breath of fresh air but now they've sat themselves back up where they left off in the previous series.

I'm getting a little tired of the crossovers, but I wouldn't mind if they teamed up with IDW and make Ghostbusters vs the Army of Darkness. Can you imagine Ash in a GB's outfit? Fighting against a army of deadites and ghosts in New York with the original GB team? Gimmicky but it works.

Aww, that's too bad - Ashes 2 Ashes is probably my second fave in the run overall, too bad you didn't like it!

@EvilStarscream: I'll maintain forever that they never should've gotten rid of Steve Niles.  His series reboot was pretty close to perfect as they've ever gotten, the guy they hired after ruined the series and painted them into a narrative corner that they can't get out of.

RE: Army of Darkness/Evil Dead Comic Discussion Thread!

I only just started reading the comics. Ashes to Ashes is the only arc I've read so far and I kinda liked it. The story was actually pretty good, even if a little rushed. It was fun, the artwork was great and I liked a lot of the writing (even if a few dialogue lines fall flat). The only problem I had with the artwork is that some panels were just too busy for their size. I'm glad to see they changed that on Shop Til You Drop Dead, which I just started reading.

Looking at what is ahead of me, I don't think I'll be as satisfied with some of the later arcs. The artwork on some of them looks pretty bad and I'm not very interested in the crossovers. They kinda got carried away with those, it seems. But so far, so good. Good to know the reboot run by Niles is decent.

@MaidOfKandar - What's your favorite run?

RE: Army of Darkness/Evil Dead Comic Discussion Thread!

I think my fave thing about Ashes 2 Ashes is watching the Wiseman trying to cope with the modern world. That and Ash getting attacked by wildlife.
