RE: Army of Darkness/Evil Dead Comic Discussion Thread!

Now Space Goat is diving into the crossovers too? And with a character that Dynamite has already used? I wish they would just tell Evil Dead stories. I have no interest whatsoever in these crossovers and it seems it's all they're doing with the ED comics.

RE: Army of Darkness/Evil Dead Comic Discussion Thread!

It really didn't take long for them to get into the Army of Darkness comics territory. Shame. There are so many stories you can tell just within the Evil Dead universe…

RE: Army of Darkness/Evil Dead Comic Discussion Thread!

I'm kind of disappointed that they're doing a Dracula crossover at the same time that Dynamite's doing their crossover. There's so much more they could do even with public domain characters that would differentiate themselves but they seem to be struggling hard for a foothold.

ETA: there are previews for the third book in the last issue of the second arc of COD, but there are no official pre-orders for the third arc at the moment.

RE: Army of Darkness/Evil Dead Comic Discussion Thread!

Well, maybe it won't be as horrible as the Obama crossover with luck....

The blurb:

Election season is upon us, and many Americans are searching for the right candidate to get behind this fall. Thankfully, Dynamite Entertainment arrives just before the end of the primaries to announce the entry of our own Independent candidate, Ashley J. Williams, in the all-new one-shot special, Army of Darkness: Ash for President!

He's faced off against demons in Hell. He's battled the dead in the future. He's even combated the armies of darkness in space. But Ash Williams has never gone up against evil in an arena like this: the political arena! From Elliott Serrano, the writer who brought you Ash Saves Obama, comes the off-beat adventure that answers the question: "What if Ash Williams ran for President of the United States?" When the Necronomicon Ex Mortis gives him a cryptic message, Ash Williams enlists the help of a beautiful psychic to help him track down the agent of The Great Darkness, an evil so great that it threatens both humankind and the demon realm. But what happens when the search for truth takes Ash on a trail that he never expected... the campaign trail? Army of Darkness: Ash for President is the one-shot Election Special that America deserves, illustrated with star-spangled flair by artist Diego Galindo.

"The Army of Darkness: Ash for President is a thematic sequel of sorts to my Ash Saves Obama mini-series," says writer Elliott Serrano. "With Ash Saves Obama, I was poking fun at all the ridiculous merchandising that surrounded Obama's first term as President. With the new election special, I get to have fun in the political realm and with the wacky things that politicians will often say. No matter what side of the aisle you're on, both sides have said their fair share of things that are just begging to get poked at."

"In 2004, we launched our company with the candidate we believed in the most, and that candidate was, of course, Ash Williams," says Dynamite CEO and Publisher, Nick Barrucci. "Over ten years later, I'd say it paid off well for us. This year's presidential race has been one of the most talked-about in decades, and casting your vote for Ash this August is sure to pay off for comics readers from both political parties."

Army of Darkness: Ash for President is 48 pages of fun priced at $5.99, by Elliott Serrano, Diego Galindo, and cover artist Elliot Fernandez! Look for it in the June cover-dated issue of Diamond's Previews catalog, arriving on shelves on August 3rd!

RE: Army of Darkness/Evil Dead Comic Discussion Thread!

OK, I love that first cover and that idea a lot.  It's at least more original than the Dracula stuff.

RE: Army of Darkness/Evil Dead Comic Discussion Thread!

Yeah at this point, it looks like Space Goat just stopped caring about making any of their content Evil Dead at all. Sad.

It's a complete rip off/ tribute to the original Friday The 13TH pt 2 poster art, let's be honest .. but it looks good anyway .. I like it .. check this out this comparison ..

RE: Army of Darkness/Evil Dead Comic Discussion Thread!

The idea of Beyond Dead by Dawn was promising, but it quickly went sideways. I think it's a shame how quickly these stories abandon the main Evil Dead theme just to make Ash battle Dracula or the Martians. It might be an interesting experiment to see how a fan-made comic book series would look like. I bet lots of you here have your own ideas for some Evil Dead stories (I know I do after the AVED season 2 fan pitch i made) that would be true to the Evil Dead feel. A bigger problem might be with the art, though. Most of Evil Dead/Army of Darkness comic books look like any other comics, but I think in order for an Evil Dead comic book to work, you need not only a good story, but also a very specific "Raimi friendly" artwork. In another words, you just can't draw Ash the same way you draw Superman.

No better place to post it other than here! Here's the site's fourth interview with Nick Bradshaw!

That was a great read, thanks Elise ;)  ... I mostly grew up reading English comics but Nick Bradshaw's style was always fun and vibrant, I've got one of his hand signed cards in one of those plastic cases on my ED shelf ...

All of the secondary covers for this arc are supposed to be horror movie poster tributes!  The one for #3 is a tribute to the classic Halloween poster, for instance.

Where did they lose you, Hurley?  I'm curious.  It's had a lot of ups and downs for me but it hasn't hit wallbanger status yet, though I got pretty close during the third issue of the first arc.

The Ash-fights-Aliens stuff is at least stuck in a side universe to the main one.  They cancelled Tales of the Ex Mortis to launch it, I think.

That'd actually be something I'd be super interested in, TBH.

For me, writing-wise, it never got better than Ash and the AOD/Ash Gets Hitched.  Good gore plus good writing plus character development?  Sign me up forever.  Dynamite screwed up majorly by taking the reins away from Steve Niles.  The ultimate Evil Dead book for me would probably be Steve Niles + Nick Bradshaw drawing.  Bradshaw probably hewed the closest to what I'd consider properly zany Raimi style splattergore.

You took the words right out of my mouth, there was just something about nick bradshaw art style that really caught my eye when i first read Ashes 2 Ashes, it was just comfortable to look at and it fit well with evil dead. Any other art style they went with for the comic just didn't feel right to me and just couldn't hold my attention like bradshaw's did, his style just fit well with the universe, the amount of detail he brought to each panel like throwing callbacks to the original films or referencing another movie (EX: in ashes 2 ashes when ash is entering the cave for the first time there is skeleton that resembles Indiana Jones, hat and everything) was just awesome to find and look at, you could honestly tell he put a 110% into his work in each issue he did, not dissing the other artists that have worked on this comic series but bradshaw style just fits it like a glove.
