Ash vs Evil Dead Season 2 General Discussion Thread [MARK YOUR SPOILERS!]

Wow, Starz has no shame in spoiling the season finale:

While i'm inclined to agree some stuff was spoiled here, nothing major got severely spoiled here trust me on this.

No F'ing way! Henrietta, Pee Wee and 'the hand' all in one episode? .. brilliant !

Henrietta goes pee wee again. The hand flips Ash the bird again. Cheryl returns... For the second time this season. Boy, they're really milking this thing for gratuitous nostalgia, aren't they? The sad part is that if all the callbacks in episode 9 are any indication of it, they really are just gratuitous callbacks and nothing else. They aren't doing anything interesting or different with any of that. They're just remaking moments from the movies. Hopefully there's more to it than that.

Also, Ash makes a sketchy, risky deal with the villain in the season finale... Again. They really seem to have reached a new level of lazy writing here. They must be running out of ideas.

I'm enjoying it, but I did find myself groaning inside a bit in Episode 9 when
they did the call back to Army, with the little critter. (Fair enough it wasn't a mini Ash this time.) Don't get me wrong, it was still a fun bit of slapstick. We've just seen it before. Ash even stepped on a pointy object again albeit under different circumstances.

Henrietta, though? I liked what they did with that, although I think we all saw that twist coming a mile off.

As for the hand, I have mixed feelings, but if we're gonna be intersecting with young Bruce entering the cabin, it feels more like a natural progression rather than something shoehorned in.

I am really looking forward to see how they
combine footage,Back to the Future 2 style, in the next episode. If they do that. But the hand had to come from somewhere, right? If they do, kudos for not including THAT stuff in the preview.

As for a nostalgia fest, even if these last two episodes are, they at least did very different things in other episodes. The first mental hospital episode reminded me strongly of an episode of Buffy, actually, but what they did with it was really good. I did notice that episode got mixed reviews here, too. Just goes to show how mixed all our views are!

That's actually a good point there...
If this is happening even before ED1, why is Ash's hand there already? I'm assuming Baal just brings both the hand and Cheryl from the future as chosen champions for his team. And that really feels like even more gratuitous nostalgia to me.

Me too. That's what I was the most excited about when the time travel stuff made its way into the story, but...
I have a feeling none of that will be actually happening. I'm willing to bet everything will be resolved before movie Ash and friends even get to the cabin. That's why we don't see any of it in the preview. Maybe we'll get a quick scene at the end of the episode, but that's all I think we're getting.

Mardeadite said:

Definitely. I think I talked about how fans have different ideas of what Evil Dead is supposed to be before. Nothing wrong with that at all.

@Dyd and Mardeadite

Guys we gotta remember this about baal, he can take the form of anyone at any time when his in that persons head, remember how he played with sheriffs mind and made him see that hooker he was with in Detroit ?

Honestly i can't wait for s3 since were getting a more experienced showrunner whose worked with bruce and the others before and is actually a huge fan of the franchise and the new writers there bringing in and hopefully they keep some of the old ones that actually provided some of the well written character episodes. (like suzanne,aaron, james e eagan)

JMO, Starz has always been awful about protecting the show's spoilers.  They blatantly post spoiler-laden gifs into the AveD tag on Tumblr hours before the show officially airs, which isn't helping their live ratings at all; they're so foccused on the new media ratings that they ignore that AvED's audience skews older and actually .   The teaser trailer does spoil stuff, but it's stuff that'll get people interested in actually (and hopefully) watching the show.  They know the ratings for this season are on a downward slope and with strong DVD sales being the main thing that's holding them up they want to appeal to the nostalgia

Though I think I'm just as sick as everyone else is about the blatant nostalgia train the show's riding.  This is an amazing show with the ability to give us any sort of creatures at any time and instead it's "Member this?  Member That?"  The Cheryl episode did the best job with that thus far, I think.

I'd like to think the new show runners will mean something.  They clearly cleaned house because they saw the results given to them in the ratings.  I wonder how the season 2 DVDs will sell next year.  The fact that it's so popular on home media might indicate it's skewing older (Cue the popular wisdom that younger people download, older folks buy DVDs, which I don't believe myself).

Speaking of ratings, the show only ticked up slightly; 0.14 and 266k.  Starz listed it as a rerun so it wasn't ranked in the top 100 cable programs of the night.   We'll see if the season finale re-gains or if it stays flat.

Post season-finale, I was wondering if we could turn this thread into an analysis one to figure out what the show could be doing more/differently/better until we start getting season 3 spoilers in around the springtime.

@Maid

I'm probably going to state my opinions on the finale right out of the gate when it airs because i have a very strong feeling this finale is probably going to leave everyone here scratching there heads and probably questioning some things and hating other things about it that will probably go for about maybe to 2-10 pages worth before it simmers down and we wait patiently for s3 info and whats gonna be changing for s3.

This is my own personal theory/speculation on what happen with Craig, i think bruce rob and maybe sam got tired of the treading old ground with the nostalgic stuff and probably gave him the boot after s2 was complete due to them wanting the show to having some longevity which bruce and mark have mentioned for having with s3 and that's probably the main reason they brought in mark to help with s3. i remember rob saying something in the commentary track for ep2 of season 1 when kellys mom starts singing Henrietta's song rob mentions it being "treading old ground and we've been here and done that already" in a very annoyed tone i can't quite remember what he exactly said but he seemed to dislike that scene in general.

Here's some quotes from bruce and mark regarding this.

Bruce Campbell: Right. Now it's time for the big story, the big arc. We get Mark Verheidenin this season, who is an old-time sci-fi guy with a lot of experience. He wrote My Name Is Bruce. I'm very excited to get Mark involved. It's his writer's room now, he's running the show.

Quint: I always appreciate good character work, which is why I really dig the family dynamic that's growing between Ash, Pablo and Kelly.

Bruce Campbell: I've had meetings with Mark and what's important to all of us for the long term health of the show is that we service the secondary characters. Those actors gotta get out of bed going “Cool! Can't wait to do this or that” rather than being the guy who says every fourth line. “Yeah, sounds good, Ash!” or “Come on, let's go!” I think Mark will add a new dynamic to that, too.

*LATER IN THE INTERVIEW*

Bruce Campbell: You have to peel back the levels of the underworld, which has its own hierarchy with their own goals. Now that he's unleashed the dead, what do they want? What's their mission? Ours is to put the shit back, but cat's out of the bag.

Quint: Yeah, I noticed the show's doing a lot of mythology building with that stuff.

Bruce Campbell: That's something Verheiden will bring to it, too. He's got that Battlestar Galactica background. You've got to tell bigger stories. Ash is foretold in an ancient book. Regardless if you think he's an idiot, you've got to address that. He was in an ancient book, so there's gotta be some destiny this guy has.
Quint: He's there for a reason.

Bruce Campbell: Absolutely. That's a great thing to explore: What is his destiny? Aside from being a jackass...

And here's a quote from mark

"“We’re early into it, and there’s a little bit of if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, but I think if I have any sort of mandate for myself, it’s to change things up a little bit,” he says. “We don’t want to repeat ourselves. It’s all the same characters, but we’re exploring different ways they can interact, maybe introducing a new character or two into the mix, and challenging them in sort of different ways. But it will still be Evil Dead, it will still be Ash doing his chainsaw-swinging action. Those parts are still very active. I think the big thing is we don’t want to do seasons one or two again, we want to be sure that the new season seems fresh, that we’re opening up the mythology a little bit and opening the characters up a little bit more, but never losing that Evil Dead flavor.”

Overall s3 is sounding more like we are going to be exploring the characters more and the book plus it's creatures then just 1 simple goal in mind, if that is gonna be the case i'm all for it !

While I liked the scene with Kelly's mum, and found it suitably creepy, I did find her singing Henrietta's lullaby a bit on the nose.

I totally disagree with Bruce here.

Evil Dead is essentially a horror/western.

Both genres of which are easily exploitable patterns for sequels and serialization.

People don't watch a Clint Eastwood movie to learn about some Pablo and Kelly in it, they watch it to rewatch Clint Eastwood be Clint Eastwood in slightly different way--and he's ALWAYS BEEN OLD.

Similarly look at Nightmare on Elm Street. Most of them have been pretty good and it's just Michael Englund doing his thing with a slightly different gimmick. They could literally had made them forever on a reduced budget and make some profit as long as Michael Englund was in the role and story is half-competent.

My Name is Bruce is one of the worst movies ever written. I would put more faith in a random member of this community writing a better script. Not trying to be a downer, but if they did it more like a reality show where fans submitted the episode, I think the longevity would be much better.

@Ashen

You seem to be forgetting mark has worked on plenty of other things then just MNIB (Daredevil,BSG, Heroes, Constantine ETC ETC), you can't just base someones line of work on solely just one thing his done, he wouldn't have worked on those popular shows if he wasn't good. Plus his been a long time fan of this property for years now and has worked with bruce,rob and sam on multiple occasions. I'd say his more then qualified then craig was to take the reigns as showrunner and i'm honestly glad his been brought on for s3.

On the subject of pablo and kelly.

I'm gonna disagree with you and here's why.

all the fans on twitter,facebook and any other social feed were practically mourning pablo's death after episode 8 and  were still talking about it weeks after it happened and are still hoping they manage to save him in the finale, the general main audience love these two characters weither you care to believe it or not they are a main integral part to the show now, so for bruce to say they wanna expand on the side characters as well is completely justifiable in my eyes.

and again i'm gonna disagree with ya.

How would setting evil dead in a reality tv based format would help make the show better, that just sounds like a train wreck waiting to happen plus ED is a movie franchise not some celebrity gossip show.

1. His experience comes from comics, and comics are normally poor when it comes to writing because they rely 90% on pictures and rehashed fandom.

2. Sure the bulk of commenting fans who watch a show over 2 years are going to care. AvED needs viewers who are NOT fans. They need people who can like the show completely on it's own appeal, not characters from a previous season.

3. I'm saying most fans could write a simple outline for an Ep that is better than what we are getting because they are already Fanboy to the max rehashes, ie new Eps be:

- The Kandarian Dagger is shattered, Ruby says there is another at a cemetery in Prague. Encounters: fortune teller, deadite wolves, living bone wall.

- Kelly develops a new love interest on the internet through a dating site only to have it be a cultist serving a deadite Necromancer. Encounters: Necromancer, Cultist, a scrapyard with traps and bodies.

- When Ash traveled through time he accidentally left a page of the Necronomicon back at the Castle, a page that can restore Ruby before she dies. He must travel to the castle ruins in modern England and retrieve it. Encounters: deadite dog-sized rats, castle sewer/dungeon, 'Swamp thing'-like deadites.

Then just follow a few rules of thumb: no dancing/silly deadites (including cars), no flashbacks, no perversion, limit the drugs/alcohol to one Ep a Season, no dialog explaining the episode as it happens or how the characters are 'developing' or whining about their lot.

It's so easy you could write it in your sleep. In fact each one of these could be a stretched out to cover an entire season.

@ashen

1. Uhhh, his not just a comic book writer if you actually took the time and look at all his done besides the comics he wrote and MNIB, but i'm not gonna argue further on this subject because it's a wait and see game to see what he will bring but i'm going to give him a fair shot and see what his gonna bring to the table but from all his mentioned about what he want's to accomplish and not do is promising enough for me.

2. So basically, the show needs to become a watered down version of itself to be successful....alright gotcha

3. Ok yeah cool, fan's have input on the stories and general outlines of their stories that's great and all but what happen's when the stories start to clash or make no sense or they begin to have no structure or no sense of a ending, sorry but this whole idea sounds like one big train wreck waiting to happen.

 4. your vision of the better evil dead show is, getting rid of what makes the deadites great and unpredictable in general and basically just turn them into zombies essentially with no personality at all,  then turn it into some Saturday morning serial with no sense of structure and pacing or a main arching end goal in mind plus not develop any of the characters nor give any expansion on there history or BG along the way and just leave them 2 dimensional.

so in short, your solution to this show's problems is basically gutting it to it's core and get rid of whats already there that makes the show great with the general audience watching it and watering it down to something it's not supposed to be and leaving it as a shell of it's former self.

If they're the same spoilers I read on Reddit, I can see it actually being polarizing to the point where it frustrates the majority of the audience.   I wouldn't even call those choices very bold, just lazy and boggle-worthy and proving that they have no real sense of proper story structure.

If Chet and Brock get to be ghosts released from Kandarian hell by the finale, why not Cheryl?  Why not Linda?

It's also possible that they want someone who will agree with what they want done without opposing them. I agree with you that Mark definitely has far-ranging experience, but some of that experience is controversial (people blamed him for shit on Heroes, and I think his run on BG was controversial?).  So he has mixed reviews, but some good prestige to his name.  Could be worse.

I will interject to say that there's a vociferous group of people who loathe Kelly for being "too (x)" on various websites.  Pablo gets a lot less hate for some reason.  No one was celebrating when Pablo died because people seem to like him in general, but if it were Ruby it would've been met with indifference - and if it were Kelly there would have been celebration it seems. I'm always a person who will stand up when a character's getting flanderised (see: me liking her as general but disliking her immature characterization and the "powerful vagina" stuff).

What AW is suggesting is something along the lines of what Tales from the Crypt's revival is doing; but that's an anthology series that requires no continuity, which wouldn't work with AvED because their continuity is (generally) linear; they would need to get people together on a teleconference to iron things out.  While I agree that we need better writers and have only had a handful of memorable episodes, they might want to pull from the pool of fan talent once, and only once.  The thing is that these pedigreed/close-to-the-franchise writers keep biffing things.  Fresh blood is definitely needed.

OK, guys - once again, separate corners, please.  I can see how AW's ideas are at least interesting steps in a different direction (though we've honestly had some of those concepts in the comics and they didn't work - I liked the Kandarian Dagger idea tho).  I think we can agree that the writing's been imperfect this year, though it's been better than last year's (a lot of people actually think this season is worse, which I disagree with).

And the episode 10 thread is already there!

@Maid

I might know which place your talking about who has a good majority of non-kelly fans, from the places i've looked she's gotten pretty good reception everywhere else i've seen (Facebook,twitter,tumblr,instagram and reddit) with the occasional spite at the character or dana herself, but for the most part pablo kelly and ruby reception have been pretty positive this season.

Bruce and Lucy are doing a Q&A on Twitter right now. All you have to do is go to the Ash vs evil Dead page, and use #AskAVED. https://twitter.com/AshvsEvilDead/status/806989865015341056

@Joe

Are the rest of the spoilers in the post accurate, RE: Ruby 1's death, them burning the cabin down, Pablo returning to life?

If Cheryl's with them I'll consider that a satisfying emotional epiphany.  Now he needs to release Linda's  and Annie's spirits :p.

Also is Knowby with them or are he and Henrietta still burning in eternal torement etc?

Also Joe's right, the live q&A is Sunday before the finale! On the 11th at 7:30 PM EST I think?
