Ash vs Evil Dead Season 3 General Discussion Thread

News tidbits:

Aved 2 has slipped down to #18 on the day of its release, but it's still #1 on the horror chart.  Don't know what that means for the sales figures or how that compares to the season 1's output.

The Starz/Lionsgate deal has resulted in a deal with Hulu to host and broadcast their original programming, including presumably AvED.

Starz has picked up Black Samurai and is planning on going to series with it.  It might make a fine companion for AvED.

I'm not entirely ready to go doomsayer on the show yet.  The merch sales for it must be decent, but I don't think they're incredibly spectacular compared to the rest of the franchise, which is why we keep getting multiple Ashes instead of new characters.  The DVD sales are again excellent, which makes Starz' actions all the more confusing.

@Joe

So my guess is

Tapert won the tug of war on the tone of the season.  The show already missed its opportunity to make Linda, Cheryl, Chet and Brock's deaths (and Pablo's temporary death) have real meaning, though Lee Majors' existence makes me wonder if Ash is going to be employing hindsight.  If he can't 'go back and time' and undo things thanks to whatever deal he's made with Ruby and they're going to stop side-stepping/making a joke out of characters' deaths (though they already did that a season ago vis a vis Amanda) that might be interesting.

The strong emphasis on the "all three movies" thing is interesting.  Will Embeth Davidtz finally show up?

I really wish there was some sort of way that we could all get together and help promote this show. Like something we can do as fans. A project of sorts. I have no ideas but man I really wish more people would give this show a chance. A lot of people I know, don't even know it exists or what it's about. I have not had so much fun with a show in quite a few years and I really don't want to see it die. Season 3 may be the final chance this show has at success.

If anyone here can think of any good ideas on how we the fans can help get this show more into the limelight then I would be up for suggestions and the possibility of working with others to achieve something. Just throwing that out there. Personally I have no ideas but I'm ready to work with others on some kind of way to save this show if such a thing is possible.

I also noticed on Amazon that season one has 1,693 customer reviews for the physical release and season 2 only has... 4. That is very odd. It's worth noting that the season 2 link has been there for quite a few months and reviews could have been posted during that time and yet nobody is reviewing it. I just published a quick review but that's just disappointing. Maybe people really aren't watching anymore...

Ok now that is just a illogical observation, it's obviously selling copies, people are buying it. There probably just wanting to watch it rather then post up a amazon review then go watch it, give it time It'll build up :P

Anyways, got ANOTHER bruce interview and there's some more interesting quotes in here.

Season 2 had a crazy amount of blood and gore. Where will Season 3 go with that? Do you feel like you have to top last season?

CAMPBELL: In Season 3, we were like, “Let’s get back to the myth.” I’d say 1/3 of it is humor, 1/3 of it is horror, and now 1/3 of it is mythology. Don’t forget there’s time travel in these movies, rifts that open up, netherworlds and parallel universes that exist. Season 3 is packed to the rafters and hopefully, when it ends, you’ll go, “Holy shit!” For Season 3, buckle up! Nobody is safe in Season 3.

You’ve gotten to do some really fun, really cool things on this show, and I think this show has really surpassed the expectations of even the biggest fans of you and this character. What have you found yourself doing on this show that you never would have imagined that you’d be doing?

CAMPBELL: Getting weepy. Ash gets a little weepy in Season 3. He’s pushed to the max. Ash is overloaded and he kind of has a breakdown. It’s really fun to see. Even in Season 2, when Pablo is cut in half and wrapped in a garbage bag, Ash is spinning in circles, smoking angel dust and drinking right out of a bottle. Man, there’s just nothing better than playing that. That’s the hero I want to play.

Do you ever worry that you’ll run out of ways to decapitate someone, or are there endless possibilities?

CAMPBELL: That’s for the writers and the effects folks to figure out. They’ll keep coming up with new ridiculous sequences, but the trick is to maintain the story. Everything will run dry, effects wise. It’s hard to always come up with new stuff. We’ll always try hard. There’s a lot of cool creatures in Season 3, and there were in Season 2. I got to fight a colon, and I’ve never fought a colon before. There’s more to come, but we want to keep people interested in the journey of Ash.

We've only seen ash close to breaking down in a couple scenes (EX: Scene with linda, Almost shooting kelly, amanda dieing, some of the scenes in the asylum) but i don't think we've seen him have a actual full on breakdown scene yet, it makes me wonder just what the hell causes it. (Not counting the car scene with pablo as that one was played up for laughs)

So let me get this straight in what bruce is saying here, were going to be traveling around to the netherworld, other dimensions and parallel universes this season, if so then holy shit  that's gonna be insane if that turns out to be true.

Bruce sure seems to keep pushing what sounds an awful lot like actual drama--almost like it's important this time. I mean, he almost won't shut up about it.

But is an actual interest in drama coming too late to save the show?

Better late then never IMO, i'm very happy were going this direction since it could be there final season so hey, go big or go home is what i say.

Yeah there very much pushing the emotional aspect and story very heavily this season in the interviews it's almost becoming a broken record and it's music to my ears. i've seen dana mention it, ray has been heavily pushing it and now bruce won't shut up about it, and they also seem to be putting the effects and gore second and aren't talking that up as big as they were the last two seasons.

It's more

"Yeah the gore and effects are great but were focusing more on telling a actual story and fleshing the characters out this year"

AKA We got a more experienced showrunner that's gonna actually put forth some effort compared to  "KINKY SEX JOKES, DON'T TAKE IT SERIOUSLY LOL, GOTTA HAVE THOSE GOREY SET PIECES, FANSERVICE ! ....uhh what else, oh yeah character development and some story i guess.... HERE'S SCENES WE RE-CREATED FROM THE ORIGINAL TRILOGY !  :D "

I picked up the season 2 Steelbook Blu-ray today. It's not as nice as season 1's Steelbook. There's no texture of any kind. Seems half-assed to me. There are a lot of featurettes though.

Yeah, I think the clear comment discrepancy has to do with the fact that season 1's been out for a good year - plus Amazon's changed its policies re commenters!

The interesting thing vis a vis the drama selling/pushing is that Bruce says the thing he likes best about playing Ash is making him do idiotic things.

RE top 10s - AvED 20's already out of the top fifteen on Amazon's rankings. Still doing OK on the horror chart last I looked, but the set's range doesn't look like it's as extensive as season 1 (yes, this time I researched before stating anything).

@Kain - are there any blu/steelbook exclusives?

@MaidofKandar I'm not sure. I don't have the regular set to compare. I don't believe so.

More spoiler tidbits:

From Broke Horror Fans

Last season, we met Ash’s father. We meet more of his family this year - perhaps a daughter. So Ash not only has to save the world, he has to raise an unruly daughter in a very shitty way. Everything she sees makes it seem like he’s a serial killer, and everything he says makes it seem like he’s insane, and yet he never lies to her. He has a line where he says, “I may be a crappy father, but I’m also a crappy liar.” There’s a little bit of that bond. It’s all hands on deck in season three.

And we’re doing a lot more of the mythology. Who is Ash? A drawing of him is in the ancient book, so he’s not just some loser in a trailer park. Why him? There’s a lot more of that. And, at the end, we crack it wide open. We take that egg and smash it on the sidewalk. Nothing will ever be the same by the end of episode 10. Nothing!

From SYFY

Ruby is going to show her true colors, which are not good. There is hell to pay.

@Kain - I double-checked Best Buy and it looks like there's no exclusive steelbook featurettes after all.

Looks like were confirmed for some major news at NYCC and maybe a trailer !

OH BTW.

Ray recently did a interview with 1429_elm and he confirmed what i called a while back when bruce first confirmed it.

1428 Elm: Changing tactics, let’s talk about dynamics. We know that Ash has a daughter. Are Pablo and Kelly like brother and sister to her?
RS: Well, anytime a new person comes into the equation it might make you question if this person is going to take away what you already have. You don’t know what you have until you might lose it.
We have a couple new cast members as well that come on and shake things up. Ash’s daughter, I don’t know man. Can she really be trusted? The only thing that lets you know if you can trust someone in this world is time.
Time will tell if she is trustworthy, time will tell if she will take Pablo away from Kelly, time will tell if she is evil, time will tell if she really is Ash’s daughter, it is just a matter of time before everything is unfolded.
I will say she is an amazing actress. As a person, loved working with her. She is an excellent addition to the team. Never complained, also a fighter, she went with the flow and we love Arielle Carver-O’Neill.

Wait, why would ray be saying brandy is evil ?

Well that's interesting, Ruby's still in the 80's and she needs something from ash to replace him plus she's very desperate. Put two and two together you got brandy, WELL THEN.

Now that i look back at lucy's interview, she laid out some pretty thick hint's towards this scenario, it could be interesting to see how this one plays out and the actress playing brandy does have a mix of bruce and lucy in her facial features.

While this idea may sound bad at first, it could be a interesting arc for all the character's involved here and could lead to some meaty character development for ash himself. I'm starting to see that the main theme of this year's season is "family", i say let's wait and see how this will play out but so far i'm intrigued by this.

Walk-through of the ED Halloween Horror Nights thing at Universal Studios Hollywood.

I gotta say, for something that's only going to be up for a month, Universal did a nice job--works as a highlight reel of the two seasons' 'best' moments, with no hint of jokey/hokey-ness. Its quality is (I think) a fair ratio between effort and non-permanence.

This thing is by-far the most mainstream exposure the show--or maybe even the franchise--has ever gotten. It should help pique interest at least somewhat, I don't see how it couldn't. I'm sure there's plenty of "Only on Starz!" type ads at the entrance (etc).

I can only wonder what the Normies will take away from the maze, haha They'll probably think Ash is the main psycho leading all the villains!

EDIT: Huh. Only now realizing the irony of Universal Studios hosting a thing that celebrates the non-AOD portions of the franchise that they DON'T own. You'd think they'd have just done an Army of Darkness thing without the involvement of Sam/Lionsgate's portion of the franchise. Although I'm sure this was paid for by Starz as an advertising expense. And I guess adding AOD to the HHN shindig would only advertise a product that isn't well known... with another product that isn't well known. Oh, ironies.

EDIT 2: Wow. The one at Universal Orlando is almost completely different--and worse. THAT one focuses more on Season 2--and not even the good parts. The Orlando one is prettymuch a highlight of all the worst aspects of the show. I'm flabbergasted!

@Doc - ETA xposted into the other thread! Got convo there!

Also previously they did indeed do some Army of Darkness stuff, including a whole pit scene.

@Joe

I'll die laughing if Brandy ends up being Baal in disguise.  Or if she's the result of Ash accidentally seducing a demon.

Bruce is now saying "maybe" February for AvED 3.  He's also blaming illegal downloading for the show's poor ratings and claims it's among the top most downloaded shows, but it didn't make the top ten for either 2015 or 2016.

Alright guys, i got a full on description for s3, and holy shit, they were not kidding about going into the mythos this season.

The third season finds Ash’s status in Elk Grove, Michigan has changed from murderous urban legend to humanity-saving hometown hero. When Kelly witnesses a televised massacre with Ruby’s fingerprints all over it, she returns with a new friend to warn Ash and Pablo that evil isn’t done with them yet. Blood is thicker than water in the battle of good vs Evil Dead.

Bruce Campbell (The Evil Dead, “Burn Notice”) leads the cast, reprising the role of Ash Williams; Lucy Lawless (“Salem,” “Spartacus”) as Ruby, devises her most diabolical plan to defeat Ash and raise hell on earth; Ray Santiago (“Touch,” Meet the Fockers) as Pablo Simon Bolivar, forever loyal to Jefe (Ash) will realize his true destiny in the battle against evil; and Dana DeLorenzo (A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas) as Kelly Maxwell, whose single goal is to kill Ruby and end the Evil Dead torment once and for all. New to the cast for season three are Arielle Carver-O’Neill (“House Husbands”) as Brandy Barr, Ash’s long-lost daughter left in his care when her mother meets an untimely demise; Lindsay Farris(“Home and Away,” Primal) as Dalton, leader of an ancient order called the Knights of Sumeria, who seek Ash to lead their fight against The Dark Ones. Lee Majors (“The Six Million Dollar Man”) returns as Brock Williams to warn Ash from beyond the grave.

Sam Raimi serves as Executive Producer with Rob Tapert (Evil Dead, “Spartacus,” “Xena: Warrior Princess”), Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead, “Burn Notice”), Ivan Raimi (Drag Me To Hell, Spider-Man 3) and Rick Jacobson (“Spartacus”). Mark Verheiden (“Battlestar Galactica” “Daredevil”) serves as Executive Producer / Showrunner. Ian Williams (“Power”) serves as Co-Producer and Moira Grant (“Spartacus”) serves as Producer.

@Maid
Honestly, when he first said that statement about the show being number 1 pirated show at the beginning of his book tour he sounded very sarcastic about it, i'd take that statement with a very big ole grain of salt.

@Joe - Yep, I should have assumed that - It's a print interview, so you can't quite judge for his typical sarcasm (and for all I know it might be a top 20 download, BitTorrent didn't release that much info).

Hmm!

So the mom must die early in the season to leave Brandy in Ash's care.  Probably at the evil's first emergence.

It's interesting to me that Kelly's big goal will be killing old!Ruby.  Sort of a "now the student becomes the master" thing.

We're just over a week 'til NYCC and a likely trailer!! Which might have a start date? Man, I hope we get a start date.

Well it's entirely Starz fault. When Season 2 came around they offered a streaming only plan but it wasn't advertised that well. Signing up was another issue. Could you do it on the Starz website? No. (I think now you can.) Roku app? No. (Haven't checked recently to see if they finally updated the channel.)

At the time of Season 2 (I actually got a cheap cable deal with free Starz for Season 1) I could only sign up through the Android app and then login the Roku channel so no wonder most whom refused to get Cable and the addon package for Starz ended up pirating the show. Also didn't offer any type of Season pass on like Amazon, Vudu or Google Play at the time either....

What was advertised at the time is Starz being an addon to Amazon Prime & Sling TV though....

So they need to advertise the Starz streaming service better for Season 3 and consider offering a Season Pass option as well.... I mean DVD and digital sales do well....

Wasn't the amount of Seasons pitched for the show 4 or 5? Hopefully they decide to continue the show and let it wrap up to the original planned amount of seasons....

I also hope the Season 2 ender is some type of dream or trick by Ruby or they make sense of it somehow. Otherwise i've enjoyed the show warts and all and look forward to Season 3 even though I'll have to wait a few extra Months. :P

Yeah, they did a bad job making their cord cutting measures actually be cord cutting measures.  Apparently the Hulu deal is supposed to help with that.

I'm pretty sure none of the Starz shows have season passes except for Highlander?  Can anyone correct this?

It was five!

Here's a nice interview with Joseph LeDuca and he reveals a upcoming scene and a new confirmed location from s3.

*Major Spoilers*

Can you tell us a bit about your work on “Ash Vs. the Evil Dead,” and what we can expect from the upcoming season of “Ash Vs. Evil Dead?”

JLD: “Ash” is just as nutty as ever. I had to score a scene where he is attacked by all the instruments in the high school band room. Who knew a harp could also be a face slicer. Need I say more?

Now that, sounds like a true evil dead scene. Can't wait !

Uh oh then as many are complaining about Hulu's new UI design. I mean people threatening to cancel Hulu because of how difficult the new UI is.... Not good....

I hope they offer a Season pass for this.... Makes sense if the main viewership appears to be from Disc & digital sales....

They need to do a better job to advertise ways to view Season 3 and let people know.

This site should also do a News story that covers all the basis for viewing Season 3 as well.... I asked to do this to let people know when Season 2 dropped but was sadly ignored.

Hope for the best. We gotta let Starz know they need to improve ways that fans can watch & support the show.

Oof, that's too bad.  I was considering jumping from Netflix but I'm probably going to stick it out there.

I'm guessing they're not season passing most of them - I went googling and can't really find anything, not even for Outlander or Power.  It seems that you can only buy episodes individually, versus subscribing to just buy the series alone.  The digital numbers have been all over the place (they're not doing much in live fives and DVD sales are actually smaller for 2 vs 1) so you'd think they'd be more options to buy the show as it's airing.

I sense you weren't being ignored!  It's likely your email slipped through the cracks; Kain's told me he's super busy IRL.  Either way, I like your idea and I'm going to DM him to see if we can apply it to the site with credit to you once we get an actual S3 start date.

The thing is that Starz makes it hard to actually offer options.  They launched the $9 cord cutter option just after AvED 2 launched last year, and for a lot of people it seems not to be worth it.  They have a tendency to (as far as I can tell) release the entire season after it airs to itunes/vudu/Amazon/Google Play/Youtube, which leaves the viewer to spoiler dodge, which can be annoying/tough on them.  I guess Hulu will have them same day or day after airing like most of their series.
