Evil Dead Burn | Official Thread

Florent Bernard & Sébastien Vaniček go on the French Crossover podcast to discuss Evil Dead Burn!
(It sucks that they've been giving all these interviews about the production and we non-French speakers are missing out :()

Yeah. Not worth posting here if it isn't accessible to a wider audience.

Sébastien Vaniček did a text interview with French magazine Premiere (January 2026 issue, now on sale) talking about Evil Dead Burn. Thankfully, I can use the magic of Google Translate for this interview! There is a snippet from the Premiere website, but I will present to you the full thing!
PREMIÈRE: How would you define Evil Dead Burn?
SÉBASTIEN VANICEK: It's a horror and survival film on a very reduced timeline, with a race against time aspect. Which doesn't prevent moments of relief: there is probably more humor than in the Fede Álvarez remake [released in 2013]. However, it gets close to it on the horror side. It's perhaps the least bloody of the Evil Dead films, but undoubtedly the most violent and brutal. Let's say I'm aiming more for the discomfort of the famous teeth on the sidewalk scene from American History X than excessive gore.
So it sounds like it's gonna be more like Rise on the humor side of things...
Can you give us the plot?
Sorry, no. (Laughter.) Too soon! What I can say is that the protagonist, played by Souheila Yacoub, is a French woman in the United States. Besides, the film has a very French DNA. With my co-writer, Florent Bernard, we couldn't see ourselves telling the story of young Americans... Too far from us. So we went looking for things we knew. And I'm also bringing French music, as well as my own expertise, which remains very Frenchy. Even though I filmed in New Zealand.
So back when Sébastien first spoke to Premiere in June of last year, the French main character was male, so I guess maybe there was either a new draft written after that or it changed during casting.
Visually, what can we expect?
I insisted on practical effects as much as possible and it's not a spoiler because it's in the film's title: there's a lot of fire, real fire, which offers a huge amount of texture and light play on screen. Without playing the Kubrick card, who only used candles on Barry Lyndon, a good part of Burn is lit by flame. And what that creates on skin cannot be reproduced with digital special effects.
Neat.
The film is supposed to take place in the same universe as the first Evil Dead films?
Even Sam Raimi doesn't really understand this rather messy timeline. (Laughter.) But the mythology is present and we're playing with it. It's a balance: Florent is a hardcore fan, he wants to conform to certain imposed figures, place easter eggs and make the fans happy. I tell myself that sometimes you have to twist the codes for the good of the film. "Kill the father", but looking him straight in the eye. To respect the franchise, you also have to transform it.
So... nobody knows what the hell to do with the timeline and these new films. Please stop fooling around and just come out and say they're unrelated to the Ash mythos!
We have the right to hope for a Bruce Campbell cameo?
(Laughter.) I will not answer, you will have to ask Sam Raimi!
I mean, he's been in all the other ones...

Heavy 2013 vibes, especially with the usage of "Kunda" as the incantation. It was "Kanda" the trilogy (and AvED, I think), but 2013 changed it to "Kunda", so maybe this is teasing a stronger connection to that film (especially since Sony is co-producing it).
2013 uses Kunda as well as Kanda. The full incantation is "Kunda, Astratta, Montosse, Kanda".

Funny thing is that "kunda" (even with the same pronunciation they used in the film) means "pussy" in Czech, so this got the whole theater laughing back in 2013.

HAHA. .. any time I re watch that film, I'm going to be thinking that now.

Florent Bernard has posted a video to his official YouTube account entitled "2025 in 365 seconds", in which he shows one second of his life from every day of the year. Starting with July 6 at 3:19 in the video (stylized as 06/07/25), we begin to see glimpses of the production of Evil Dead Burn! We see the set being built, character images, the cast at a script reading, and the first look at the official logo. After that, he goes back home to France and (as far as I can tell) there's nothing else related to Burn.

PSA: PLOT LEAKS ARE NOW CIRCULATING FOR EVIL DEAD BURN!

Out of respect for those who want to go in blind, I will not be posting the plot synopsis (as vague as it is) here, even behind the spoiler tag, since there are some major character spoilers in it. This same individual has also provided some new behind the scenes images, which gives them and the synopsis they provided some more legitimacy.

FROM THIS POINT ON, IF YOU WISH TO AVOID SPOILERS FOR EVIL DEAD BURN, I SUGGEST YOU AVOID SOCIAL MEDIA SITES (or at the very least, don't look for hashtags related to Evil Dead)

After a few days of various online rumblings and rumors, Sam Raimi Updates (who was pretty solid on info related to Rise) has confirmed that Evil Dead Burn has indeed had it's first test screening.
I chatted with someone who attended this aforementioned screening and verified some of the lesser-known details that I had previously heard rumblings about. They said that is was way closer in tone to 2013 than Rise, and that when it comes to gore, it's more like a Terrifier movie. The humor was described one or two notches above Rise, but nowhere near the splatstick of ED2.

Hrmm. I'm not sure how I feel about this. I'm getting soft in my old age and Terrifier isn't really a benchmark I appreciate. Still, hopeful about the flick.

Honestly hearing that, i feel like my interest has completely drained in wanting to see this now, the sweet spot for me with evil dead is when they have a perfect balance of horror and dark comedy with goofy but visceral gore that's not disturbing and hearing that they are leaning on 2013's tone with terrifier?

Yeah i'm gonna sit this one out i get the feeling this one just isn't gonna be my cup of tea at all. I like 2013 to a point but it's probably my least re-watchable entry in the franchise due to just how in your face it is with itself tone wise, Rise being in that same category mostly because of that 2013 tone and that stop and go pacing with the action in that film really pulled me out of it.

Maybe i'm just getting tired of these new entries trying to chase that disturbing feel of the 2013 remake instead of focusing on doing something actually different with the franchise and being inventive with the tone.

I am of the "still optimistic" camp. Evil Dead movies are like looking at a menu at a restaurant... there's something for everyone. We've got grim-dark movies, we got adventure/fantasy movies, we got slapstick, we got straight horror. Even though it may not vibe with everyone, I think it's great that this net can be thrown out to bring in these different audience types.

100% agree with that, i may be down on this one but that's what i love about this franchise the most, it's a very pick and choose what you like franchise and acts very much like a multi tool in that regard in what you are comfortable with.

My big worry is that there's to much of the same thing going on here with these new entries (Rise and Burn) and it's gonna lead to a oversaturation with that same 2013 tone.

As Kain said, i'm hoping with Francis film it will be a much needed divergence from that in your face grab you by the throat and shove your face into it tone the 2013 film gave birth too and it's does something more creative with it's tone and vibe then what this one seems to be aiming for.

Something I've often thought about is that maybe all these new guys coming into the sandbox are not wanting to potentially ruin their "big break" films by doing something too slapsticky/over the top and want to play it safe. I mean, that's a major reason why Raimi wanted to make his first feature film a straight horror film... because it was a financially safe project. I can't say that I fault Fede, Lee, or Sébastien for wanting to do the same especially when the films that started incorporating humor more prominently were not exactly box office hits...

I recently rewatched 2013 and what's so weird about it (specifically with how Rise really copied it in some ways) is that this "tone" was kinda played out even in 2013. That movie is basically "Evil Dead for the Saw generation", meaning it already came out like 5-10 years too late. It's also one of the main reasons (or maybe even THE main reason) why that movie never really clicked with me, no matter how much I love Jane Levy and the Roque Baños score.
