Evil Dead Burn | Official Thread

Color me surprised, as I expected to hate absolutely everything about this movie, but to me that one shot sequence already looks infinitely better and more fun than anything in Rise. I'd like it to be a bit more raw and old school and not so obviously digitally touched up and stitched together, but still... Fun. I'll wait for the official release for my final assessment, but so far, I think it looks alright and much better than what I was expecting – even if it's not exactly breaking any new ground.

>I like that we're back to floating/flying Deadites after they were kinda forgotten about by 2013 and AvED (except the last two episodes), so I guess we have the viral opening of Rise to thank for that.

I'm going to save judgement until seeing the full movie, but overall... I like it!

I think any new Evil Dead movie, especially if they're not going to try to have recurring characters (and they should not, really; you won't top Ash), will really live or die in its setting and context. Maybe that's why I like Rise better of the "recent" ones; it's different enough to be its own thing, where 2013 feels "remake" cause its at a cabin.

So I'm very curious to know more about the settings of each of these movies. Deadites themselves are pretty basic and aren't gonna be innovating much. And that’s fine. But put em in a new place? Cool.

And this one seems to be going with the Aliens approach. More, more, more.

That's why I enjoyed Rise too; also had characters I care about (I still only care about one 2013 sequelboot character).

Agree with you on the 2013 thing. So much of that movie is echoing the first two, especially in the main character department. It's not that I don't like the characters, but they suffered by intentionally being repaints or amalgamations of characters we know. Rise's characters are (for the most part) not trying to tread those same waters. I never saw the shadow of Ash on Beth like I did on Mia, and I liked that.

Someone on Reddit just pointed out that we've seen this house in the trailer before...
It's Rebecca Prevett's house from Ash vs Evil Dead Season 3. Same exterior, same interior... including bowling pins and a very distinct window.

EDIT: I just compared the trailer with the house in Ash vs Evil Dead. The exterior is 100% the same (except in AvED there wasn't a gazebo), but the interior is a little different. The windows and the fireplace are the same, but the door to the right of the fireplace (which has the diamond window) wasn't in AvED, and the staircase is slightly in the wrong place (there is a staircase by the front door in AvED, but there's a wall right in front of it, so you can't see into the fireplace room).

The most important part of that trailer when it comes to connections: the STUDIOCANAL logo. They halted filming this movie until they could finalize that deal to get all licensing rights (minus Army Of Darkness) to the Evil Dead films and show.

So they can basically do anything. I wouldn't be surprised now to see Lucy Lawless make a cameo as someone with a random name buying that house at the end of the movie. (I have no idea about any spoilers of this film, but seeing Previtt's house has my mind reeling.).

Great find. As a mega Evil Dead fan, I did not pick up on that at all.

I don't think there's any continuity or shared universe reason to this. It's just that both were shot in New Zeland, so it's probably just a good spooky location.

I'm thinking this is more the reason than anything. They had a pre-established relationship with the location, they probably still had the blueprints for the matching interior set, so they probably didn't have to spend as much money on it for location scouting/set design.

Rob Tapert knows how to spend effectivelly.

Eh... I feel kinda crazy seeing how a lot of you are saying Rise was better than 2013 mainly because it was so "different" from the other movies in the series and not trying to repeat the same things, when one of the main reasons I was so unmoved by it was that it felt so creatively uninspired and pretty much like just another remake of the original Evil Dead to me, with a little of Evil Dead 2 sprinkled here and there. Sure, it's not set in a cabin in the woods (even though we still unnecessarily open the movie in one) and the characters are now a family unit instead of a bunch of college friends, but other than that it's essentially the same movie, beat by beat. For all the talk leading up to it about the movie being set in an apartment building, they don't really do much with it, do they? I mean, most of that building feels deserted and the majority of the movie takes place in a single small apartment, so the setting really didn't feel all that different from an isolated cabin in the woods. In practice, the apartment works exactly like the cabin in the original while the rest of the building is subbing for the woods. The same inside/outside setup. Then let's look at the movie's narrative structure: They randomly find the recording in the building's basement, just like they found it in the cabin's cellar in the original movie. One of them plays the recording out of curiosity and unknowingly unleashes the evil, just like Ash did in the original. Then we get the elevator scene, which echoes the questionable tree stuff scene with Cheryl in the original. The first person possessed, the same female character from the elevator scene, turns deadite in front of all of the others and ultimately gets locked out of the apartment, just like Cheryl in the original, who ends up trapped in the cellar. She then proceeds to taunt them through the front door, trying to manipulate their feelings so they'll let her back into the apartment, just like Cheryl and Henrietta did while trapped in the cellar in ED and ED 2. The corpse monster thing at the end although fun in concept and execution, feels like a rehash of rotten apple head from ED2. That final moment with Ellie's head echoes the "swallow this" moment with Henrietta in ED2. By the way, you all think they weren't trying to turn Beth into an Ash character? I could agree with that for a large portion of the movie, but I think that pretty much went out the window when they decided to put a chainsaw in her hands and Ash's literal one liners in her mouth. I'm being 100% sincere here when I say that to me, in a lot of ways, Evil Dead Rise feels just as much like a remake of the original Evil Dead as the actual remake from 2013. It's just a collection of the same scenes and plot points, only with a very thin new coat of paint. When I say I wish these movies would stop doing the same thing over and over again, I'm wishing for more than just a change of scenery.

And yes, for the love of all that is holy, please don't attempt to link this movie to Ash vs. Evil Dead in any way... Just let it stand on its own, I'm begging here. Let that house be just a fun little nod and nothing else.

Well, the one reliable source who attended the test screening said the only connections were to...
Evil Dead 1, 2013, and Rise. 2013 was kind of a given since Sony is involved.
He made no mention of there being anything from Ash vs Evil Dead, and neither did the other person who attended. And since we know STARZ turned down the animated AvED series, I'm going to safely bet that they're sitting this movie out and have no serious interest in revisiting that IP any time soon.

You have to take into account that Rise was made coming out of the pandemic when the amount of people allowed on set was very limited, and focusing on a small group is kind of at the heart of The Evil Dead which I thought worked really well... but the idea of moving it forward with a road trip involving Beth and Kassie was an Idea I kicked around. Call me crazy, but that is the thing I want to see most from any of the other Evil Dead story lines because it would move the story in a whole new direction and I like the idea of Beth teaching Kassie to become a badass Deadite slayer as a kid.

Someone reached out to Ash vs Evil Dead and Evil Dead Rise production designer Nick Bassett and asked about the house. Apparently it was his idea to use the house for Burn when he was still attached to the project (but then he left to do Lee Cronin's The Mummy after Burn was delayed), so it seems as though I was right about them using that location again because they already had an established relationship with it.

Side comment, possibly ignorant, and not based on having seen it (cause I haven't) but the description of the aforementioned Mummy makes it really feel like it was maybe initially intended as an Evil Dead movie. At least conceptually. Just sayin'!

Teaser's finally up officially in HQ:
