Evil Dead Burn | Official Thread

I'm sorry guys but this didn't grab me AT ALL.

I know that we talked to death on here about how bad this movie looks but HOLY SHIT it's insane how bad this movie looks. It's so flat and desaturated that in multiple shots I literally had no idea what's going on.

And when I did know what's going on, I didn't really care. I didn't care about the characters or the plot. The Deadites weren't very fun (they shouldn't always be funny, but they should always be fun) and the fact that their main goal was somewhat more complicated than just swallowing souls kinda cheapened them in my eyes. The overall themes could have been interesting if the movie didn't force feed them to you every five minutes. I honestly think that they say "family" in Evil Dead Burn more times than in the entirety of the Fast & Furious franchise.

I don't hate this movie. It doesn't tarnish the Evil Dead legacy for me or anything, but it is now easily my least favorite entry, to the point that I feel that maybe I was too harsh on the 2013 remake.

I would say that I'm not mad, I'm just disapointed.

Just got home from my screening. It certainly lived up to the promised brutality. The last time I physically winced this hard at a movie was Lee Cronin's The Mummy.

Speaking of Lee Cronin's The Mummy, I felt as though the Mom in Burn (can't remember her name right now) felt like a transplant from LCTM when it came to dumbass decisions and seeing freaky shit going on with her family. Alice absolutely was right in saying that the Mom deserved all the shit happening to her.

The only really spoilery thing I have to say at the moment is in regards to the final post-credits scene.
I did not like Ellie coming back. Not only does it take away from Beth's satisfying kill in Rise (IMO), but it also screams of studio interference by bringing back THE character everybody on social media loved in a completely nonsensical way that not only breaks lore but logic as well. It also didn't help that Alyssa Sutherland kinda spoiled it herself with that special trailer she shared back on Mother's Day.

I may have more to say after viewing it again, but as of right now: It's just alright. 7/10, making my current ranking as follows: ED2>AOD>Rise>TED>Burn>2013

Also, people are pointing out that Bruce has a cameo in the film as a photograph in the house. When Grandma takes the motorized lift up, the IMDb photo of Bruce (the same one they used in Send Help) is on the wall.

I also missed the Oldsmobile, though I would assume it's in the parking lot of the nightclub at the beginning of the movie(?)

Well, like a said before I don't have a problem with this scene because I'm pretty sure it's just a cameo and will have no effect on the sequel (maybe I'm wrong but I'm sure they will again use a new director with new ideas and new characters for the sequel). And the way she came back was not more shocking than the mini Ash coming from the mirror in AoD, Cheryl coming back from a photo or Linda's skull coming back to life 30 years later in AvsED. It's just magic so wathever I guess lol. I think I would have been more disappointed if it was a big plot point in the movie.

Hmmm... should I go see it tomorrow afternoon or wait for digital?

I'm gonna see it in a couple of weeks once I have the funds; gonna make a night of it.

Tomatometer is at 76%, which was enough to certify it "fresh," for the curious.

Two additional points from me after I slept on it:

1. The one positive thing I will say is that the movie has a uniquely morbid sense of humor, which allows it to be scary and funny in a way that we haven't seen in an Evil Dead movie before. So props for that.
2.
The most frustrating thing about how the movie looks is that it seems to be a deliberate thematic choice. Because in the very final shot, after the main character shakes off the "darkness" of her abusive husband and his toxic family, the sun finally shines on her and ve finally see some color on her face. Which... cool metaphor bro, but probably not worth your movie looking like dogshit for 99,9% of the time.

Just got home from seeing it. I give it a 6/10. It's my least favorite of the series, but it still had a lot to like. I feel like of the new series it was the most grim but also the funniest. No memorable characters like Mia or Ellie (sorry Thya). The stuff with the dog was also totally unnecessary and served no purpose.

So I got back from the theaters a few hours ago. Wasn't a fan. I mean, I really wasn't a fan. It might have replaced Evil Dead 2013 as my least favorite film in the franchise.
Maybe the positive side of Burn is it will make people love the other new movies more

I'll go next week some time, but it's interesting to see the wildly mixed reactions online. Many people on Reddit (I know, I know) seem to hold 2013 in the highest regard and are disappointed in Burn because it can't compare. Some say it's the worst Evil Dead movie, and others claim it's the best of the franchise, the best movie of the year, etc. I hope, for me, it will be the best of the new movies, but we'll see.

I can sort of see that someone would think this is the best one of the new "trilogy", but what Evil Dead fan could possibly think this is the best one out of the entire franchise?

Redditors doing Reddit things. As a whole, I take their opinions with a huge grain of salt. I'm only living vicariously through others' posts for now until I can go see it.

Sébastien finally addresses Ash vs Evil Dead... kinda...
It’s clear from the opening that this film connects with Evil Dead Rise. But there are also a lot of Easter eggs that fans are going to notice right away. Your film is set in the same house Ruby Knowby used in Ash vs. Evil Dead, so now fans are going to wonder if there’s a connection there. I’m also curious if there was any talk about how Evil Dead Burn connects to the original movies, because there are three different Necronomicon books floating around in this universe.

Yeah, but if you take the [Ash vs. Evil Dead] series — you understand that the lore is completely chaotic. And when you start to work in this universe, you are like, “Okay, so what are the rules?” It’s like, there are no rules [Laughs]. For me, it’s all about having fun and playing with things, playing with expectations, and playing with fans who want to see things and want to find things. So, of course, you want everything to be connected, but it doesn’t mean that you put that here because it means whatever. This is a work that fans will do better than myself. The only thing I wanted to do is give them tools and toys for them to have fun.
So there you have it. Lee said it, and now Sébastien says it: the lore of Ash vs Evil Dead is too "chaotic" to make work for this new continuity they're building.

That's when you just ignore AVED, because it was a poorly thought-out experiment /hit with a brick.

It looks like Evil Dead Burn will hit home video pretty quickly. The 4k Steelbook is up for preorder:
