I'm pretty sure that's not the case; they announced that renewal for TWD just before they had a huge cliffhanger. I smell some serious character deaths coming up but the way Bruce talks about it ("We'll be a 'real show' if we get a third season") there's something else that's a sticking point.
ETA: the set's dropped down to tenth place, I was just at Amazon trying to figure out something and noticed that.
Yeah, I agree with Bruce in that season 3 is kind of the sweet spot for any show... and six is kind of a good point to wrap things as most shows are past their sale by date.
RE: Ash vs Evil Dead Season 2 General Discussion Thread [SPOILERS]
Got some bad news / good news on AoD being used for s2, apparently what rob was saying at comic con was taken way out of context and everyone reporting on it jumped the gun.
I've been sort of putting that to bed. It was a random thing that Rob [Tapert] said, and you know how the internet is, if you see one sentence written, it's real. I think Rob was more alluding to the fact that we've already taken stuff that would have been in Army of Darkness. He still time-travels before Army of Darkness. People have always asked, "Where is Army of Darkness?" Like, we don't really need Army of Darkness. That was sort of our take on the whole thing. You've got to be careful referencing certain movies, because then you have to make deals with certain partners that might own those certain movies.
Here's another interview with bruce were he elaborates more on it.
NEWTON: We went crazy when producer Rob Tapert said that Army of Darkness would get some recognition in the upcoming season. How much of an impact will that have?
CAMPBELL: People shouldn’t read any more into that than a simple statement. Now, there are some elements of Army of Darkness that we use. But there are some elements, which if we use them, would make our lives more complicated. So we decided to make our lives not complicated. Because if you think about the first two movies, you get everything you need. Shotguns, chainsaws, axes, time travel, and a book. That pretty much covers everything you need. And then the universe that expands from there is new.

They at least have a five year plan ahead of them if things go well.

Ugh. How many times is Rob going to blurt something out during a presser, then have Bruce claim "the internet jumped on it?" It's not the internet jumping on things or to conclusions when people have video footage of you saying the thing you claimed you didn't say.
I wonder if Universal saw those beer commercials and decided to request some cuts.
RE: Ash vs Evil Dead Season 2 General Discussion Thread [SPOILERS]
Honestly at this point, it's just gonna be a wait and see game with this subject but its really starting to aggravate me to no ends that universal is holding AoD close to there chest just so they can make a quick buck off the name itself (Crappy comic books, games, 10000000th re-release ETC) if they manage to squeeze in the subtle ref here or there then great but honestly i just do not care anymore :dodgy: .
So has Bruce, who will totally swear he never said the thing while being aware he said the thing. And that's twenty plus years pre-internet at this point! No one's adjusted for the fact that digital recordings exist! I'm a big fan (obviously) but I've gotta call an issue an issue.

Y'know, I'm of a mixed opinion on this one. On one hand, Universal's a huge conglomerate and I'm not going to root for them over the little guy.
On the other hand, I can see why Universal's doing this without sympathizing with them. Sam, Rob and Bruce signed that agreement back in the 90s and they knew how draconian the agreement was, for one. For another, Universal is in direct competition with the parent company of Starz, so letting them have what they want is a bad corporate move. Plus Bruce, Rob and Sam have spent endless years complaining about the studio cut and being forced to film the S-Mart ending, so I can see why Universal's lawyers might not cut them a break.
I mean, the reason why it's easy for then to license ED2 and TED is that they basically own TED and (most) of ED2. When they license to Anchor Bay they're licensing Starz' parent company, and Anchor Bay/Studio Canal tends to do as many re-releases of those two movies as Universal does AOD.

I heard them talking about it on the commentary track, and I'm glad to see they are kind of sticking with the way they did it in the past with their other shows... and I think a nice little 5, 6 year run for AvED would be perfect. We shall see how it all works out in the end though, but I have to say I'm happy we got something after all these years because for a while I was beginning to doubt it would ever be... and that something has been an absolute blast.
They have all gotten really good at dangling little carrots in front of the fans faces before pulling them away at the last second. I always wondered back in the dark days when there wasn't a whole lot of Evil Dead related stuff going on if they just loved teasing fans (can you say cock tease,) or were they just testing the waters to see what kind of reaction it would get, hmmm.
-The Possessed Delta episode looks like its going to be very intense/fun to watch, plus that's the fastest i've seen bruce run in a long time haha
-Ruby Feels like a actual character this season which is top plus in my book !
-Kelly and Ash convo in the car about why his not been back and his very dead pan look !
-Ash being very embarrassed to be around his father ("you got a green card kid ?!" "Yep that's his father alright")
-The sane line is probably going to turn some heads but i look at this more as ash just being a sarcastic asshole more then anything else cause the sheriff is giving him a hard time and another thing to point out is he just says "FRIENDS" i wonder why he keeps leaving out his sister, HMMMMMMMM.
-The action/Effects/choreography look way more thought this year and plus the practical effects look 10x better then s1 (Good god what a swirly ash was giving there haha)
-The look and feel there going for this season just looks fantastic, it looks way more evil dead then s1 did.
-Eli is slowly becoming my favorite minor character
-Ruby's children look very dangerous this season, they almost act like xenomorph's !
Man did this first look get me even more pumped for s2 then the season 2 trailer did.

We're just kinda stuck waiting for a renewal at this point.
For me, the carrot dangling/baiting is annoying because it makes them look unprofessional. There's a line between teasing the fans and making themselves look disorganized in front of the press, and this continues to cross it. It's like the Emmy campaign.
Season 2 teaser responses!
What I liked:
Most of the practical work was very nice.
Brock calling Ash 'Ashley'. So I'm guessing everyone in Ash's immediate family called him by his full name pre-cabin (and it's a nice callback to Cheryl).
Kelly and Pablo's Cagney and Lacey moves with their guns.
The fact that Ash actually cringes at the green card line.
I'm still excited for the possessed Classic episode.
Hah, duct tape ripped with teeth once more.
"That is horrible...and also awesome!"
What I didn't like:
That extremely clunky exposition with the sheriff was...almost funny but not? I won't get into the was-Ash-temporarily-insane-in-the-cabin-during ED2 and TED debate, because it's possible that his mirror hallucination was the cabin playing games with him versus his mind driving him to hear and see things due to extreme trauma. Also I reserve the right to call this guy 'sheriff exposition' in a month and three weeks when he shows up.
That CGI sweetening is still noticeable as hell, especially in HD and especially in the headshot scene in Ash's bar.
"He's your father, all right!" Yeah, the 'Ash is so mildly racist! You won't BELIEVE what he won't say!' stuff still isn't funny and, in the studio edit for season 1, barely exists, so this stuff still doesn't work for him as a consistent character beat. And it's weird seeing them use Brock as a character through which to mouthpiece the stuff that was in the original Kelly and Ash characterization (judging from the pilot script). Also why would Ash roll his eyes at that line when he's said worse stuff to Pablo in ep 8 and 3 last season?
Again, the thoughtline with Ruby is a mess. She, in her own words, wrote and created this book. She's existed since time immemorial. She should know that baby demons will grow into big demons, and she should know what she can and can't control after a millennia of being a demoness. I know they foreshadowed this with her look of 'wow really?' when Ash gave up and handed her the book in season one, but she can't both be this naive and this foolish. If it turns out Baal is pulling the strings and making the more powerful than she ever imagined, THAT makes sense.
"Do I save her because I should? Or because she's hot?" No. Why. Do not subject us to Ash/Ruby, show, that would be so cliche.
The design on the demon children is fairly original, but their behavior as horror creatures is not.

Off-Topic
that emmy campaign was actually done by the ceo of starz as he was pushing to try and get one of there shows nominated along with AvED, here's a article on this subject even more.
- I actually love the fact there bringing ruby down to ash, pablo and kelly's level for this season instead of going to the route of making her a powerful villain archetype , I'm just really happy there going this direction and expanding on her backstory a bit more because we basically got jackshit on her in s1 besides she wants the book and she's tracking ash down, here she actually feels like a real character.
- No i don't think there gonna do Ash/Ruby and it's just ash falling for the same old woman in distress trick plus he was very conflicted about saving her as well, ruby's manipulative and like they've said a million times before CAN'T BE TRUSTED, ruby could just be using them to defeat baal to reclaim control over the book and it wouldn't surprise none when it's all said and done that she betrays them.
- After hearing the commentary for s1, i'm gonna let them be on the digital effects because of how they have to shoot these episodes (For s1 if i remember this correctly they had to shoot episode's within 5 days) granted idk how the production went for this year but judging by the early start they got, were going to be seeing little touch up's here or there with digital stuff but it's probably going to be mostly practical in the long run cause of there hit the ground running attitude for this year's season and it really shows.
-In one of the early reviews for ep1, they mentioned that they were parodying the tropes of a small town community in horror films (Waitress,Sheriff ETC), so i have feeling that stuff is probably not meant to be taken seriously as characters.
-TBH, Ash may have been somewhat racist in s1 but the way he act's when says some of the stuff, he immediately regrets saying it , tries to not say the wrong thing or tries to not spin it into something racist, so ash cringing at what his father says or does makes sense in my eyes plus it's kinda big character development for him as well.
Another thing to point out is how there handling ash dealing with cheryl's death, it's very awesome how they treating her not getting mentioned in ed2-3 and spinning it into ash burying that scar deep down and just not wanting to talk or think about it hopefully the pay-off to this arc will be worth it, but seeing how there treating it from the previews, there doing a very good job of it so far.
RE: Ash vs Evil Dead Season 2 General Discussion Thread [SPOILERS]
Wow. From that teaser, S2 does look REALLY fucking good. Better than season one.
Here's hoping it lives up. And honestly, something about seeing Bruce actually running in his full regalia (shotgun/chainsaw) makes me so happy. It feels like he's legit trying!
RE: Ash vs Evil Dead Season 2 General Discussion Thread [SPOILERS]
Yeah... That teaser did absolutely nothing for me. That looks exactly like season 1, only more visually polished. A lot of the problems I had with season 1 are apparently still there and they continue to take the Evil Dead story in a path I'm simply not interested in. I'm gonna refrain from going more in depth about it, as I don't wanna get too negative and overanalyze stuff before the new episodes are released. I really hope I'll enjoy season 2 more than season 1. This little inside look did nothing to make me think that I will, though.

Only thing, that gives me a LITTLE hope, is the fact, that s2 will propably focus on Ash's home town locationwise. So some of the new supporting characters MIGHT get a little more development than Kelly's parents, Lionel, Brujo, Lem or all the other one dimensional victims the ghostbeaters met on the road.

I'm with you. What's up with random one dimensional victims showing up to be deadite fodder out of nowhere and getting little development? What we need are really good, fleshed out characters in true Evil Dead fashion. Characters like Shelly or Ed or Bobby Joe or Jake. Or Ash. It took us until the third feature film to find out ANYTHING about him other than his relationship to the other characters.

Nah, don't compare multi-season TV series with 90 min movies. I know ED never was very high brow storywise. But in 2016 there a higher standards for story telling, especially when you want to fight in the same league as WD or GoT.
Beside that I think movie characters like Scotty, Annie or Jake always had a little more plot function than just cannon fudder or Mr. Exposition. But that is just my opinion.
RE: Ash vs Evil Dead Season 2 General Discussion Thread [SPOILERS]
I'm all excited for the practical effects and gore but this just made me even more excited for season 2, it's very cool to hear were going to be getting more story and character development for the main group and the story expanded upon this season.
Campbell: So it’s cool. I know everybody talks about gore, but for all the talk about the gore, this season actually has a, I would say, substantially more character development. You’re going to spend a lot more time with your pal Ash and find out what makes him tick, and his friends are on a crazy journey this year, too. Kelly’s being schooled by Ruby. It’ll be interesting.
RE: Ash vs Evil Dead Season 2 General Discussion Thread [SPOILERS]
Here's another interview with bruce, Nothing really new expect for this last part of the interview.
CS: I know you’ve promised a ton of gore in the new season, but what is Ash’s arc this season? Or does he have one? Campbell: He goes home and he has to deal with the mess he made three years ago. He has to make good with the town that he basically left in shambles and fight the evil dead.
CS: Really? Campbell: And save the town. That’s a hell of an assignment. He has to deal with his father and his old pal Chet and his ex-girlfriend and sh*t like that, old nemeses, boyhood nemeses, you know, all the sh*t you run into when you go back home, plus deadites.
CS: So when it rains, it pours. Campbell: So it’s cool.
- Even so, they approved of the campaign before they went through with it and it was not a professional look, then again Starz continues to flunk the whole 'look like a professional network' thing with every series they have outside of Black Sails, Power and Outlander. Bruce seems to try to apply what he's learned on the convention circuit to things that don't need such applications.
- But why does she need to be 'brought down to their level' is my question? There's a million and one ways to integrate a non-human, immortal, highly-powered character into your main cast of characters without turning them into a victim figure, and there's a thousand ways to heel-face turn your main villain in a way that makes them more likable. Why does she feel more like a real character here to you? Because she's more vulnerable? She felt like a real character to me in episode ten when she said she created the book. That is a backstory that I want more of. Not to say we won't get more, but it's hard to piece together who they want Ruby to be when her characterization turns on a dime every three episodes.
- "Do I save her because it's the right thing to do or do I save her because she's hot?" IDK. It seems to be building toward something, just like Brock being attracted to her in the bar scene we've heard about (Father/son conflict over a woman would not surprise me in this set up). Because the series has the notion that all of Ash's girlfriends die violently stuck in its teeth I can't see (cutlining spec in case I'm right)
Linda surviving beyond this season as she's the obvious love interest of the year. My bet is that Ash either steps out of the way and reunites her with he sheriff husband or they get together when the sheriff husband dies in the jailhouse ep.
So I wouldn't be shocked if they're setting up something for Ash and Ruby that's endgame like.
- I can't let them off the hook for the CGI. I just can't do it. There are series with smaller budgets and shooting times that are just as tight that manage to create effects that look good with CGI, and when you're having your cast brag about your practical effects nonstop in interviews and talk about pus canons and stuff like that I feel like I have every right to say 'your sweetening looks ridiculous'. And it's not like they need it! The actual practical stuff looks great. IDK why they feel the need to tweak things that don't need to be tweaked. It's the same excuse they applied to the remake, where they lied to the press for months about how every single effect was practical until just before the release date.
- That also has me concerned, that every episode in the season is supposed to be a horror genre parody. In a franchise this original, you don't need stuff like that. I already smell tonal issues just like the ones we had last season. But if every new supporting character is a cliche and they're going full-out comedy IDK if anyone will buy the Cheryl part of the story.
- I wouldn't say Ash visibly regrets much of what he says in episode 2 (Then again I thought Pablo and Kelly trying to figure out which Ash was which by saying that the 'real' ASh is racist was a bit too much because he only says this stuff in the first, second and ninth episodes) because he keeps on saying it and doubling down on it.
- Y'know, I like this and I want them to make that a linear thing in the continuity, but IDK if I'll accept the logic behind it. I mean, he talks about Linda and her death was enough to make him temporarily lose control of himself, albeit reluctantly and with great pain.

Mysterious Packages are starting to show up in the mail for some of the fans and it has ashy slashy on the front of it, i'll keep a look out for anyone who posts the contents of this but i have to say i'm quite intrigued to say the least !
I got all excited for a second that we were getting a 3D episode. Oh well! I bet the picture book is cool. I wonder how many episodes are on the screener. Looks like five plus BTS?

I'm with Muzzlehatch on this one. There's a thick line between having disposable fodder in your short horror film and establishing useful characters in the five hours of television. Everything's not running at a breakneck pace in the show, there's room to establish people and make us give a damn about them.
(Also Bobby Jo and Jake have enough personality to at least make them characters. They're not nuanced or fleshed out, but there's moe to them than the show's hikers, just like there's more to Lionel and Lem than there is to Ed and Shelly).
(Also we do learn things about Ash in the first and second movie; minor character details, but it's something that serves to make a complete character portrait).
ETA: Nice find, Joe. I'm still honestly wondering why the whole town would be in shambles, though. I think Bruce means to say he wrecked Ash's dad's life
