Ash vs Evil Dead Season 2 General Discussion Thread [MARK YOUR SPOILERS!]

I thought they stepped things up by using less cgi in season 2, and didn't really see any problem with image quality although anything shot digitally looks too clean to me.

To be honest I am not sure what makes me feel that way. Maybe it's just some lightning and grading choices. Things that have more to do with the individual director's decisions.

Is it just me or went the production value also down hill After S1? I just rewatched someone scenes of the pilot and in comparison the S2 finale looks quite cheap. I mean just visualy, the image quality, color grading etc.

S01 is shot in bright light and graded to be vibrant like a Hallmark commercial.

S02 is shot in the dark with a better low-light camera and graded more like a John Carpenter movie.

If you compare both of the dark scenes, S02 has better quality.

One thing I noticed is that I think the sound/vocal mic quality is lower in S02.

Bruce said they were given less money this season and so I think they were kinda smart and put it towards a low light camera and had to cut the budget elsewhere.

That really depends. There was a ton of CGI fire and cabin stuff in the S02 vs S01

The deadites have about the same CGI, minus the CGI blood, it's just better done.

The fire stuff is understandable. I just watched the behind the scenes video that Starz posted, and most of the Henrietta stuff was done with a puppet. I can't help, but think it would have been 100% cgi had it been done last year so they have stepped things up in some ways... and gone backwards in others like writing. Using real blood is always a positive thing, and I'm sure if you ask Bruce they have improved the recipe along with the delivery process over the years aside from the splatter scenes at the beginning which still bugs me.

@Chemvilla: YEp, that's exactly how I feel about Ash; they're missing his slight softness. You can be an ass kicking badass and still have a softer core.

@Ashenwraith - Did they really admit they had budget cuts? I thought they increased it this season. I think Joe had a source that said it went up?

@Nick - and the thing about the slight use of CGI is that when they use it it's SO damn noticeable - like her sudden CGI extendo-neck.

IMO the effects were definitely better this season, especially digitally. I will give them that.

Regarding the hobo and so on, i guess the time travle stuff has some issues (or paradoxes), but those are the same ones you may find in other approaches from movies or books  (more or less...)

@ChemaVillalba For me, that scene you referred to, about Ruby trying to explain the approach of the writers to the time travel thing, with Ash suddenly interrupting her, was actually pretty clever to me...they managed to highlight the "spirit" of the series (why care about it, let's have fun!) and Ash's character attitude, while avoiding giving any details on their take on "time travelling"

For me the real problem is that the final didn't make any sense at all...i mean, don't you agree that the fact they skip how they managed to come back to the present is enough evidence for them being trapped in some kind of time loop arranged by 80's Ruby? i strongly believe it, eveything seemed so PERFECT (come on, even Ash noticed it...!!). It's funny how the season ended with a pretty similar scene to the one in the first episode, back in Jacksonville...everything is so perfect, it is about to get really bad!!  :D

Bruce said during an interview that the studio gave them less money to do the same thing again and expect better results (and alluded that this was often normal).

To me this kinda makes sense since they greenlit S01 and S02 at the same time and probably figure they could reuse stuff--and it seems like that's almost exactly what S02 was if you had to put it into words.

I don't know what actually happened or if I interpreted it differently.

I love Lucy Lawless but Ruby's character this season feels like she's written sort of poorly. In every one of her incarnations (S1, S2, 80s) it feels like she has a new personality and is a completely different character.

Also having Baal as the big bad felt extremely out of place. His whole classy edgy demon vibe felt like something out of Supernatural rather than Evil Dead.

So, i have heard this theory in a couple of places and wanted to know your opinion... who thinks the actual ending of this season may lead to a proper crossover with the ED reboot from 2013? (which basically translates into introducing Mia Character) from my point of view, if they wanted to mix both universes (something i would have consider just IMPOSSIBLE six months away) it's the momento to do it.

Besides, i think Bruce Campbell himself hinted something about crossover possibilities on the show, in a recent interview...

Thoughts on this...?

I will admit, when I saw that bit after the end song when the girl picked up the book, I wondered if they were going that route.

I haven't seen the remake yet, and I don't know how they found the book (I assumed it was somewhere in the cabin much like Ash and co did). And I know there was a cabin, although I guess it could have been taken to another one.

Hmm. Maybe. I'll have a better idea of how things could possibly tie up after seeing the remake. (A DVD I've had for a few months now but still haven't gotten round to seeing. Heh.)

Well, the overall tone of the film is drastically different, even from the first Evil Dead movie. Hence, they will surely find troubles trying to blend both styles within the format of AvED TV series, script wise...

Peoples are still debating about this season ending. Time will tell if this A) an illusion B)The real thing. If B then, the producers didn't take the show seriously, and just want made random crazy stuff to Ash. "Just because it's fun & campy."

I'll give a chance to a 3rd season and if the show is still a random mess. It will be the last one for me.

I know the movies are B series and are campy in a way. I agree with some of you logic wasn't always there, BUT I think there's a certain limit. They just went random and nostalgic in the second part of the season. If they want their target audience to be "Beavis & Butthead" they're in the right direction.

You can't compete with the Walking Dead or a Game of Throne with this kind of show. They took a 1990 sitcom template and fit Evil dead story into it. I just feel the story is improvised from writer to writer. So it went in every direction in each episode. I just think they should avoid the cross over since the writers can't handle the basic logic of time traveling and Butterfly FX.

My thoughts, exactly. I'll give the 3rd season a chance based on the creative staff changes they're making and hope that they will get their act together, but it's the last chance I'm giving. If it doesn't improve considerably, I'm done with the show. It's just too frustrating to keep watching. Oh, and if they decide to crossover with the remake on the 3rd season, I'd give up on it immediately. It would be a desperate move, it wouldn't make any sense and it would be a bad case of scraping the bottom of the barrel for ideas.

Staff changes is also the main reason why I still have a little hope left for the show. Yes,  It need to improve considerably.  They need to stop rush everything.  For one thing they "fixed" or "tried to fixed"in season 1, they managed to create much more problems and plot holes through the story.  Hope the new staff will get more brain and less fart or vagina jokes under their sleeves.

I wouldn't be shocked if they went in that direction as a desperate attempt at jumping at considering the ratings, but I'd really rather they didn't try it.

IMO, the person who picks up the book sounds like a valley girl, so I think they're of the 80s.

+5s for the finale are in; cume is a 529.  While that's around what they did in the live ratings for last year's finale, which is kind of unfortunate; somewhere along the line they lost 200k viewers during the course of this season, unless all of those viewers shifted the show to marathon and mobile status.

ETA: apparently season 2 will become availible digitally on an ep per ep downloadable basis today via this Tweet.

Might just be you. The practical special effects were a lot better in season 2 but I admit season 1 had that "fresh" post production look.

I don't think this is for filming but more so probably pre-production stuff or his just visiting the writers room. (Which dana and lucy have visited in the past months for some table reads or something, who knows.) If it was for filming there would have been a lot of posts from the cast, crew and stuntmen saying there in NZ.  Oh hey look at that, there is plastic in bruce's trailer ! (Check out the couch)
