RE: Evil Dead Television Series

So I guess somebody fucked up, because that French site had those pictures like half a day before anyone else, including the Starz official site.

RE: Evil Dead Television Series

So apparently Bruce Campbells wife has seen the pilot episode for AVED, and this is how she reacted.

RE: Evil Dead Television Series

RE: the Franchise's feminism: I'd say it's an embattled concept.  For every strong figure like Annie and Sheila and possibly Ruby and Amanda and Kelly, you still have the damoclean sword of the vine rape hanging over everything.  Even that's got mixed messages going on; Sam has expressed regret about it, Bruce has said that it's meant to be a terrible thing, but audiences laugh at it and Fede Alvarez felt the need to double down on its existence and 'make it a hundred times worse' (I won't get into my perceived subtext on the remake).  For me, its enough that characters like Annie, Arthur, Sheila, Jake, Scotty and especially Ash get to have their vulnerable moments and their strong moments; that they be human and balanced.  That's what drew me to the franchise.  I hope it just gets better from there.

RE Joe's finds: Nice catches!  Unsurprising that Kelly's riding a cycle, fits her rebellious image.

Nice catch again, Hurley!  You did indeed beat the official US site by several hours, possibly the rest of the world.

At everyone RE the new footage - everything was streamed on the ConTV website but it's all tucked behind a paywall.  You either have to pay over Ninety bucks a year to access it or do a trial membership - or wait a month or two and see if it ends up on the free side of the site.  ConTV's never had anything that appeals to me beyond Bruce's gameshow on it so I could never really justify the expense, but even when I tried to sign up for them it was impossible to successfully log on.   (I also feel that ConTv is taking the fun of taping conventions out of fans' hands but that's just me).

PFT!  That little quote is Bruce and Ida's relationship in a nutshell.  They're always fondly razzing each other.

RE: Evil Dead Television Series

Maybe I just need to refresh my Army of Darkness memories, but... was Sheila really a strong character?

RE: Evil Dead Television Series

I just saw that they streamed it live, and I am not a fan of ConTV's shenanigans of trying to make money off people for such content either... and think letting the fans be fans by taking pics and/or video to get the word out would be the best thing to do. They could easily prevent some content from getting out so it is exclusive content for those in attendance, and release it at a later date instead of trying to profit off every little thing. >:(

Muaha.  Now I get to talk about my favorite character.

I'd actually say she's a strong character.  TO THE BULLETPOINT MOBILE:

  • After being told by Arthur that her brother is dead, what's her first instinct?  Revenge. And she succeeds in knocking Ash into the pit by hitting him with a rock, which is a decent show of physical strength and mental toughness.  Even though she's intrigued by Ash she's also not willing to let him get away with being a coward or with shirking his responsibilities.
  • Once she realizes her mistake, she tries to apologize to him repeatedly.  He's a dickweasal in response (understandably, she just tried to kill him with a rock and ripped out a handful of his hair).  She only hits him again when he insults her efforts to make up with him.  This somehow results in slap-slap-kiss-kiss, because movie conventions.  Either way, she has the decency to directly apologize to him to his face, which is more than anyone else in the castle seems to do, unless you count Arthur's apology in the director's cut.
  • After having sex with the guy and falling for him and then being told in front of the entire castle that what they did meant nothing to him, she dresses him down in front of everybody and leaves him gaping after her (Everyone quotes the pillow talk line while conveniently forgetting he doesn't disagree when she replies with 'it was more than that'.)
  • As a Deadite, she's tough as hell.  Ash only manages to defeat her with clever (For Ash) use of leverage.  In battle, she knocks him off his feet, confuses him with mimicry and almost emasculates him.
Sure, she has a couple of moments of weakness: cowering behind Ash in the chamber scene, hiding BEHIND a barrel during the winged deadite attack.  But she's no weaker than Ash when he tries to run away from the force during the windmill scene (especially because he knows by that point in canon that that never works).  Like I said: she has weak moments and so does he.

@Nick - I'll keep an eye out and see if they every surface with some kind of footage.

RE: Evil Dead Television Series

I remember reading a while back (I can't remember where now sorry) that the objectification scenes of women were mostly Rob Tapert's ideas including the tree rape, Ellen's exposed breast and the girls in chains being lead away by Deadites in Army of Darkness.

RE: Evil Dead Television Series

I did see a quick mention of some behind the scenes footage of AvED from someone on Twitter, and wonder if they just showed some of that... or maybe blooper reel type stuff. It doesn't seem like there is anything too big because no one is talking about it to be honest.

RE: Evil Dead Television Series

@Swofty - yup, and Tapert was also blamed for the re-inclusion of the tree rape in the remake; in Fede's first draft Mia is possessed after a dog bites her, which is why her brother and the others think she's just sick at first.  But Sam and Bruce have just about as much pull as he does.  *shrug*

@Nick - I'm guessing they showed something but it wasn't super earth-shaking?  I know when they debuted the trailer actual details came out instantly, so I agree that it must be more BTS stuff.

ETA: here's a pic of the Ladies watching Bruce's presentation during the panel:

I knew you would convince me. And you did. :)

RE: Evil Dead Television Series

Me too. I didn't think Shelagh was all that strong a character, but I do now.

I'm disappointed that they brought that scene to the remake! That was one of the things I disliked about the first film. I've still yet to watch the remake (altough I bought it a month or two back and it probably won't stop me as I think there's probably plenty of enjoyable stuff, but it's a shame they couldn't leave that bit out.

My ears bleed with the "this BS once and for all" inserted line. Otherwise, pretty great new footage. And it's funny how with the ending of the first trailer, we were arguing whether it was racist. And with this ending... well. :)

....So is every trailer going to end with some awkward, barely-lampshaded racism to show off that Ash is "casual" and "cool" and "Trying to relate to the young people but doesn't understand how the modern conventions work?"  HE'S FIFTY SEVEN AND LIVES IN DETROIT, FFS.  There's a difference between being a loner and making Homer Simpson level jokes while trying to relate to somebody.  Having Kelly and Pablo constantly there to go "oh Ash, I'm not (stereotype), but you sure are wacky and cool" makes them shallow and puts them in the position of constantly having to defend who they are.  NONE of the other movies needed this shit, and it's regressive and retrograde.

This has happened twice now for me.  I get all hyped watching the body of the trailer, then smash face-first into an "ethnic" joke that should've been left in the 60s.

@Hurley and Mardeadite - and I'll always maintain that Sheila is as correct in her fear of the Deadites as Ash was.  In her first encounter with them at close range involves a direct attack on her body; the second time she's being kidnapped; the third, when she first sees Evil Ash, shows a marked change in her.  She knows she's in trouble but she's going to go down fighting and clawing, because  she knows she's dead otherwise, and her soul is imperiled. Ash first tried to fight the Deadites by avoiding them too, after all.

RE: Evil Dead Television Series

I really don't mind this. Like, of course, if they're gonna use these types of jokes every episode, it will get old pretty quickly. But I can see the idea of Ash in his closed shell that time forgot and that Pablo and Kelly need to open and teach Ash how to live in the 21. century. Yes, it's really not sophisticated humour, but I think it could work. For me at least.

I could see and understand that if Ash and Pablo weren't being portrayed as friends of some length.  It's pretty clear from the pre-press that Pablo only endures Ash's treatment because he admires him.   It frankly ought not to be Kelly and Pablo's job to "educate" him that way.

All of that would be fine if it didn't directly involve ethnic and racial humor, which is hoary, outmoded and frankly will drive POC viewers away.  The original trilogy didn't have these kinds of jokes at all, and I'm not going to give them a pass for including them now.

On the other hand, there aren't these kinds of jokes in the original trilogy, because there are absolutely no minorities in those movies (however I'm not saying that if there would have been, the young Ash would also make racist jokes).

Yes, this could go somewhere if they show an evolution of Ash through the season.  I just hope they will not generate random jokes like this with no purpose.  At least, bring something positive out of it.  MaidofKandar is right, we don't need an horror version of Homer Simpson...

The extended trailer was a bit unnecessary.  It always cool to see new footage but this time, it bring nothing more than what we already saw.

I think they should make a second and darker trailer.  They said the show will be both comedy and horror...Let bring the horror side to life.  ;)

There's no racist jokes in the trilogy but in AoD, Ash is pretty harsh against everyone from the past.  He clearly judge people freely.

RE: Evil Dead Television Series

It's true (and unfortunate) that the OT lacked POC characters.  But it's no great trade up to diversify the cast and only write them as broad stereotypes/a punching bag for your main white character. Of course Ash and Kelly and Pablo's friendship will deepen and change, but there's no need for them to serve as moral and object lessons for Our Hero about How Jewish People, Women and Immigrant Latinos Are Humans Too.

This is sadly a Problem that keeps popping up in Sam and Bruce's work, going all the way back to Cleveland Smith and going all the way forward to My Name Is Bruce.  When you ask them about it they're always genuinely confused and keep insisting they're just making Three Stooges allusions, but times are changing and it's an issue that oughta be fixed.

@SutterCane - I always felt that Ash's behavior was understandable in AOD, at least in the context of the first two movies.  He's lost all of his friends, Linda (the presumable one-time love of his life) and his sister.  He was driven over the bend and back again by demons, then had to cut off his own hand.  He's looked into the face of ultimate evil and had his hair literally turn white.  Even without the previous Evil Dead canon attached to it, Linda's died and he's had to lop off his own hand.  And the first thing that happens to him when he hits the ground in 1300 is enslavement and threatened death.  I can completely understand his attitude, and why it changes and softens a little after he and Sheila converse offscreen.  I don't think there's anything wrong with judging someone who's trying to kill you!

RE: Evil Dead Television Series

@MaidofKandar :  From another point of view.  Ash lost (and killed) his girlfriend and slept with first girl he met (Sheila).  AoD is a direct continuity of ED2 so technically the time between Linda's death and he had an affair with Sheila is really short. (Maybe a few days from Ash perspective).  He lie to her (The pillow talk scene).  I can understand he completely have  the rights to be pissed off, but in the first half of the movie he didn't care about anyone at all.  Even during his quest for the Necronomicon. He got remorses half way through only when he really messed up everything.    But all this time, he knew he will return home alone.  We can understand him at some points but the guy is not that clean.
