[Official Thread] The Evil Dead Remake - Mark your spoilers!

Re: [Official Thread] The Evil Dead Remake

Here is my review of the movie, read if you dare. I'll try not to spoil it, but I'll censor it in case :).

Well I feel comfortable saying it was pretty decent.  It definitely is a revision/reboot, but I think it was a little too hyped up. I'm not saying it was bad, but the back stories for most of the elements are different, so it could be an acquired taste for true Evil Dead fans. Plus the storyline gives the movie a different feel in my opinion compared to the classic. Personally, I still prefer the originals, and I think Sam Raimi should have had more of a hand in this. Even though I'm rather picky about the movie I still did enjoy it. You can still see Raimi's influence on the movie in certain aspects with cut shots, camera angles, spotty bits of humor and such. Plus you still get the whole classic storyline, being 5 teenagers in a cabin in the woods being tormented by evil that was released from a book, and of course lots of gore :D. Also I have to give Fede Alvarez the credit for taking on the challenge of remaking a classic. The fact of the matter is that the original Evil Dead is one of those movies that cannot simple be remade, simply because of its cult following. In my opinion remaking this movie can either make or break a director, and he handled it very well.  Just make sure you stay after the credits for one last groovy wink ;D.

Re: [Official Thread] The Evil Dead Remake

First post. Long time reader.

I was fairly surprised, thought it was going to disappoint and im glad my expectations were proven wrong. In fact, this wasn't so much a remake, as it played out more like a Spinoff/reboot. Shots were decent, nice editing, the characters needed a little embellishing but hey, the other ingredients were very strong. Im not going to spoil much, but Id like to see where they take the story in the future.

Re: [Official Thread] The Evil Dead Remake

So just got back from Evil Dead and let me just say if you don't want to deal with assholes or stupid immature people talking throughout the whole thing i would see it in about 2 to 3 weeks. and even if you do it's not as great as it's made to look. basically all the so called "SCARY" parts are in the trailer. this movie was made not for the older generation who grew up with the original but for the new generation where all they really care about is gallons and gallons of blood. i was very disappointed cause i was expecting a scary movie but got nothing more then another SAW movie with a little demon twist. You know it's not a good movie when you can actually go to sleep at night. i really want to blame the crowd for ruining the movie but that would be unfair cause the movie wasn't that great from the start. i don't know about you guys who seen it already but i think i'll stick to Bruce Campbell. Again this is just my opinion, some of you might think differently about it but me? i live for scary movies, i was raised on them. And i think the only reason this movie got the R rating was cause of all the blood and gore. Not for being scary but for the gore. Just like the SAW series turned out to be.

Re: [Official Thread] The Evil Dead Remake

... dammit. I hope I enjoy it when I see it. I'm hoping for more than torture porn. Thanks for the review.

Re: [Official Thread] The Evil Dead Remake

One thing that REALLY pissed me off was that they cut out the "we're gonna get you" part. How can you put such an iconic Evil Dead line in the trailer and cut it out of the movie. Such a disappointment.

Re: [Official Thread] The Evil Dead Remake

So I got to watch the remake last night as part of an Evil Dead marathon in Westwood Los Angeles. Having the opportunity to watch all the Evil Dead films on the big screen was an amazing experience. I have to say the Evil Dead remake is the goriest film I have seen to date. Holy crap it was brutal. I'm amazed it was able to get an R rating.

The visuals and special effects were impressive. Tom Sullivan would be proud. Lots of great homages to the previous Evil Dead films. The film wasn't scary at all but made me uneasy during the really gory scenes. There was this angry nerd guy who sat next to me who got really scared during the movie. It was funny because he was complaining about stupid things the whole time.

The script was probably the weakest part of the film. You can tell Fede deffinitely is better director than script writer. I really wonder how much Diablo Cody contributed to the editing of the script. They should really get Ivan to work with Fede on the script for the next Evil Dead.

As for the characters I really liked the female characters especially Olivia and Natalie. They all made really great Deadites. The male characters weren't so great. Eric was especially annoying. Both David and Eric take a lot of beating throughout the film.

Other than two stupid scenes I enjoyed the remake. It was good but did not achieve greatness of the original Evil Dead. It was an impressive first major film for an new up and coming director. Hopefully Fede will improve with his next two Evil Dead films.

I recommend staying until the end of the credits:
The chin has an important message for fans.

Wow. I was wondering where that scene was...

Also the scene where David uses the chainsaw and gets all bloody was missing as well.

There is a post on Tumblr that has spread like wildfire about Nick Nunziata from CHUD.com when making an opening statement for the remake at one of the advanced screenings.

While there is no news article, the original Tumblr post which if you click on the "notes" you can see the whole thing unfold is here: http://everythingrhymeswithalcohol.tumblr.com/post/46992532244/trigger-warning-so-tonight-i-went-to-a

Basically what has happened so far is that he has been removed from hosting screenings. And a lot of the community is talking about the tree rape scene right now. It's absolutely crazy.

Reading the above link makes me second guess using such an avatar which I switched to yesterday. Of course, I would never make light of such a subject. The way Mr. Nunziata has handled it all on twitter is incredibly sad.

Here is another interesting article on the issue. It may be a bit spoilery... and some of the comments are too. None the less, it is an interesting topic. http://badassdigest.com/2013/04/04/evil-dead-2013-and-the-politics-of-tree-rape/

Wow thanks for sharing!

Stepping in RE all of this: my biggest problem with Nunziata's statement, outside of the rape scene comparison statement which is utterly vile in of itself, was that he actually doubled down in his follow up email to another person by declaring Evil Dead is 'synonymous' with rape.  THAT pissed me off even more.  While both the original movie and Army of Darkness have rape scenes and the one in the first movie is memorable and, to some, considered iconic, to say it's SYNONYMOUS with the act appalls me.  It spits in the face of Sam's repeated apologies for the scene and everything they built for the franchise afterward.  Am I the only one who remembers Ash actually saving a woman from being raped by a skeleton in AOD?!

Hi MaidofKandar ...

Could you please post a link to the email pertaining to the offended woman? (thanks in advance).

Here you go!  That was his response to a contact email from another friend of the girl's. And here's a series of tweets that went down during that evening. Went ahead and edited my OP with the proper info.

Thanks .. it's ever disturbing that people like him are given a platform .. I'm not going to go as far as apologising to all women as a man because I know all men aren't like that. Perhaps he'll grow up one day?. At least now we all have Elise 'super nerd' 41 to bring some balance to 'the force'  :wink .. can we get back to talking 'bout Evil Dead now?  :wink ....

I just now got home after seeing the movie, and wanted to comment on it while everything is still fresh in my mind like a soul in the ol' fruit cellar. Spoiler free.

In my humble opinion, the original trilogy was beautifully done... and they managed to leave a little something to the imagination. The new Evil Dead is over the top with visual stuff, but that doesn't take away from it in anyway. It simply make it its own beast. I will channel my inner Roger Ebert (R.I.P) and give this movie two thumbs up. It only cost an arm and a leg to get into the theater. Cheers to Fede Alvarez and the rest of the gang for a job well done.

I lied.

The man, myth, and legend that is Bruce Campbell showing up after the credits was... Well, groovy.

Watched the movie over the weekend and loved it.  It’s still a way more polished and better looking movie than the originals (naturally since its 2013).  But I definitely felt like it was an evil dead movie.  I can see why people may argue that it’s a reboot or a remake.  I felt like every scene was a nod to the original movies and I can see the potential for having a follow up or more to this new take.  I can also see the potential of having Ash/an AOD2 tie in to this new one (if that ever happens).  I’m curious to read what others may think up of where this story could go.
I did not see the after credits clip of Ash being any kind of cameo, to me a cameo would have been an actual scene involving the rest of the movie such as the previously talked about after credits scene that had him driving up to Mia in an S-Mart truck.  I myself thought it was an awseome nod to the original movies but I know a lot of other people who were let down because they were expecting more.
The only thing I was looking for in this movie were those two clips that were in the trailers.  Of David cutting someone/thing with the chainsaw as blood splatters on his face.  And the other was Mia singing the bit ending with "time to go to sleep".  I thought at first that maybe it was the song she sang to David but it wasnt.  Perhaps the trailer just twisted it like they did with the "cut it, cut it" part.  I know these were commented on previously but still.

The fact that they have made five of those so called scary movies (stupid is a more apt name) is scary enough.

The behind the scenes stuff is always interesting.
