Ash vs Evil Dead Season 3 General Discussion Thread

Gonna go on a bit of a rant here about this subject so strap in.

Its at this point 2 seasons in that i am not surprised that they've doubled down on these traits but at the same time i've grown used to "old" ash's ways because this is apparently what the creators have in mind for this "iteration" of the character and quite honestly, i see why they are doing it. Its a pattern I've recently noticed now with this iteration of ash.

1. He always starts the season off in peace or not fighting evil doing dumb shit like he usually does before shit gets serious again and his gotta don the ole cape again.

2. Over the course of said season, while trying to defeat evil, his given minor character development alongside the rest of main cast / side characters and his given a love interest to mingle with. (which might i add should be non existent in this current season due to the daughter plot. Thank god for that)

3. By end of said season, something dramatic happens by episode 8 and their is a big dramatic death that kicks this iteration of ash in the ass to wake up and smell the roses and stop being a dipshit for 5 seconds or everyone's gonna die.

4. Ash is victorious and saves the day and we go right back to square one.

this is what the creators (including sam) envisioned ash to be like after AoD. And so far,the vast majority of the fans who've watched this show love this iteration of ash. And yes i do love this version of ash as well. I'm not going to lie about it,despite this iterations scathing flaws his main interactions with kelly/pablo and the moments they actually let his character take a break from being a jackass he still has that heart of gold we've seen in past iterations.

It doesn't surprise me one bit that they upped his crudeness/brash/dumb traits and i'll give you a reason why they doubled down on these traits, "Fan service".

the vast majority who've loved this version of ash also love those traits of the character,so naturally they are gonna give the fans what they want and that is more of that. Sad,but true, and there is nothing we can do about it at this point.

*end rant/rambling*

It's not as good as season 1 & 2. It's way more slapstick and gorier.

Not too bad of a cut although there's no fancy background credits.

It moves very quickly and isn't bogged down too much by backstory.

Ash is brasher. They also made him dumber. I'm still scratching my head over some of the decisions he makes in season 3.

I wish I could say this shocks me, and I honestly kind of wonder why they fired Craig. The fact that it's already weaker than S2, which was middling, isn't a good sign that things will rebound for them.

Bruce seems to be angling for the show to go to Netflix and I'm both curious to know if it'd be worthwhile to Netflix expensewise and if they'd want it when they have plenty of cult genre horror already.

Also wow, they flanderized Ash EVEN MORE?! Does he somehow become Homer Simpson with a sawed off?!

@Joe - the problem is that if the majority of the fanbase loves this incarnation of Ash they're not showing up to support it. Either they're downloading it or supporting it as a Netflix-only view (I'm guessing from Bruce's Tweet the other day that it's done well there but I doubt that people watching it on Netflix are going to show up and subscribe to Starz which doesn't help AvED since it's owned by Starz) or the fandom's much smaller than anyone anticipated. Doesn't help that they're positively fucked in New York/Connecticut because of the Optimum stuff. So it's a weird thing. I see people happy with the show but the show's utterly, direly languishing in the ratings.

Sidenoting - Starz is going all in for promotion on the show, I just saw the first TV spot for this season today.

it's evil dead(yes i know),they always retcon stuff ash has previously done in the past all the time to fit the current narrative, they did it in the movies, video games and they've done it in the comic books a hundred times over. i don't see how or why this is such a big deal now this late in the game. Its very obvious at this point they have turned the retcon/unreliable narrator into a running gag for the show/franchise, i just don't see how its worth getting upset over this kinda stuff anymore when its obvious they are not willing to take the details seriously anymore. And as for the psa, im just going to say its a off hand throw away joke they put in there to fit the theme/narrative of those videos.

Certainly true, they stopped caring a long time ago. But the changes made from movie to movie were often made of legal reasons. In case of the series it‘s just lazy writing.

Well what else can you do when you have a franchise that can't hold a cohesive timeline together even if it was for legal reasons. This franchise stopped taking itself seriously when ed2 happened and they decided to add comedy to it, then AoD happened and it furthered the goofy comedic/slapstick style then they decided to go all out since they have no restrictions now. This is what the creators wanted/envisioned and yes sam is included in this as well cause he gave the thumbs up for this show to happen and his still a executive producer on it, and ivan is still writing on it. Only people to blame in this situation who enable the "don't take it seriously" attitude in the writers room is the guys who started it.

How big was the Raimi brother‘s influence in S2? To be honest I do not know, but I really doubt they would handle characters and plot in the same way the later episodes did. As I see it there is not only a tonal shift between the movies and the series but also between the early episodes and the worst stuff of S2. And the care to keep continuity with older installments of the franchise also seems to get weaker and weaker. At the end of S1 of Ash really is scared of being confronted with Linda because of his feelings. In S2 she‘s just one of many Lindas. Just to name one striking example. Your argument is, they do this stuff on purpose. To make it a gag, that Linda was always played by different actresses, so why not introduce a entirely new Linda? Name her Linda B! Haha. Yeah, that might be true. But it‘s stupid too harm the narrative for such a silly meta-gag.

Well it's very obvious someones stopped caring for any narrative sense if they are allowing this stuff to be put on print in a script, sam has to be giving them the thumbs up over a phone call or skype for this stuff, he still helps make the show since his still credited on as a executive producer and his brother who still helps write it plus bruce and rob's creative advice to the writers and showrunner don't help either. Just seems like to me the creators themselves have given up or gone creatively bankrupt for where to take this story next and are just thinking by the seat of their pants at this point.

What? So Ash never went to college now? Are they actually retconning that part of the character's backstory as well or is that just a random joke for these cheap PSA style promos? Either way, it's weird and confusing.

I can't believe they actually retconned something out that was a HUGE fucking part of the character. even in Sam and Ivan's approved AOD rewrite, Ash was a college student or a recent college grad, which is how he knows how to make his own fucking hand out of medieval-grade weaponry. I know these are supplementary things that probably (hopefully) won't show up in the main body of canon and thus aren't 'really' canon and shouldn't be taken too seriously, but their obsession with dumbing him down into a total moron is so fucking annoying. This supplementary stuff is only going to be sought out by the diehard section of the fanbase anyway, so you'd think they'd take care.

How big was the Raimi brother‘s influence in S2?

Ivan wrote at least one of the episodes last season, and one this season. I feel like Sam's influence has been negligible since season one, though I'd like to think he had input into Brock, Brandy, Linda B and Chet, since they strongly impact Ash's past. I presume it's like Legends of the Seeker and other stuff from the Ghosthouse production wheelhouse, in that he attends meetings and hypes it up but is more focused on his directing career. Which is why we're here, resigned to cancellation three seasons in.

plus bruce and rob's creative advice to the writers and showrunner don't help either.

In the end I wonder what the ultimate verdict is going to be as to the show's (still only possible) downfall. Was it Rob's overweening and ultimately faulty influence? Bruce letting his personal interpretation of Ash cloud what's actually been in the movies for decades and thus discounting what fans saw and have seen in Ash for years, leading to disappointment?

On to brighter things: cast takeover of the official Instagram is apparently happening today, though I've seen no new activity on there (Spoiler warning for some of the images already up). According to Joe it's an app-specific event, so you'll have to hook up with it live that way!

New video interviews with IGN, Spoilers

I find it kind of charming that Ash doesn't like Brandy's swearing, but the fact that Bruce is differentiating Ash's feelings about Pablo and Kelly from his feelings about Brandy by saying they're blood related and thus it's a deeper connection spits in the face of the strong found family feeling they've been building for two seasons.

@Maid

You can only see the stories through the instagram app, they have been active on it all day and they are watching the show right now judging by the last one i've seen.

Ahh, things I didn't know - they didn't specify that it was ap-specific in promoing it so I had no idea where to look. A tip for anyone who wants to look!

Some more Stills were released at the SCADS, spoilers are naturally attendant.

You can see what Ash's store looks like and note that they cut some budgetary corners with it; there's some blatantly New Zelandy/European spelling and concepts going on (Rubbish bags instead of trash bags). That's interesting considering what sticklers they were for making everything Michigan-proper down to Faygo bottles on the windowsills last season.

Pablo definitely goes Deadite at some point and tries to kill Brandy to boot. You can get an excellent look at the makeup on him and note that he's the one pulling her out of the skylight of Ash's trailer in another still.

A female character gets used as scrap Nec paper, much like Pablo did in season 1.

In the ING video Dana claims S3 will be much more complicated and serious. I would love that. But judging from Kain‘s statement I doubt this is true, for the first episodes at least.

The cast's insistence about the depth of the season makes me wonder if something drastic happens after episode 5.

I would assume this is a set up that by the end of the season Bruce realizes that Pablo and Kelly are just as much family as Brandy is. Seems like that is where it would lead. The writers may not be brilliant but they know that the entire conception of the three of them is suppose to work as a family. Brandy could very well end up dying as well with Ash acknowledging that his family was with him this entire time.

I may be in the minority but even if this show isn't the "Evil Dead" I've wanted since Army of Darkness, it's still a mighty fun time and I still love it. It's also still one of the most unique things on television. We may not get a season 4 which is a huge shame but I am very much still excited for this season even if it's not what I ultimately would have liked. This Ash VS Evil Dead is much better then getting nothing else with the franchise and characters.

I like this idea - we'll have to wait and see, tho!

And I'm glad you're enjoying the show! That's the great thing about this board - we all have incredibly different opinions about it, and our opinions are all valid and there's room for everyone to voice one, loving the show or not.

Right in the same boat with ya, it's one of the better reboots despite it's flaws it's still a very entertaining show to watch.

I have some thoughts on this family situation and what some of the pictures hint at.

I think brandy is going to survive, in my opinion it would make for a much more powerful ending. I mean think about it, ash actually saving one of his only surviving bloodline and his friends ?

Can't ask for a better ending then that for him.

Judging by some of the photos, i think were going to see some type of a rift between pablo and ash form after he changes into a deadite in episode 4-5 and attacks his daughter, and i'm gonna guess pablo leaves for a bit to do his brujo training after this blowup between the two.

We see pablo and him fighting in one picture in the school hallway where the prom is taking place at.

I'm gonna assume ash let's brandy go to this, but his right there in the school keeping a eye out for anything while she has fun and let's her take her mind off everything that's happened previously.

What this main fight between the two is about, i have no clue. But i'm gonna assume it has to deal with trust issues and what happened previously and ash not taking any chances. It'll be interesting to see how this scene plays out though, not gonna lie.
