RE: Evil Dead Television Series
@SutterCane - I'm willing to give Ash a (tiny) mulligan on that one for two reasons:
1: Sheila isn't even the first woman he meets after Linda dies. If you count Evil Dead 2 into the joint continuity he meets Annie (with whom he has a platonic friendship) and Bobbie Jo (who just kind of exists to him) if "only" AOD counts into the equation, then he meets with Arthur's handmaidens before they exchange more than screams. Evil Dead 2 can be seen as Ash's accelerated mourning process RE Linda's death: he does have a nervous breakdown over her, and the memory of her is what saves his soul. It's speculatable that he's locking his memory of her away in a mental closet; that Linda's been cast for AvED is interesting and suggests he's still thinking about her years later.
2: Ash isn't looking for a fight from Arthur. He only gets angry when he's dragged off to his presumed death. It's sort of understandable why he might not care about any of them at first, because they're means to an end toward him getting home and forgetting all of this happened. Then when the only person he's developed a bond with (Sheila) is kidnapped, everything snaps into perspective for him, and his grudging respect for Arthur and Henry ultimately result in him doing the Right Thing.
I definitely don't think Ash is perfect; it's one of the reasons I really love the character. He's rash and rude and doesn't take time to mediate on his choices. And he does lie to Sheila - what he said to her we have no clue, except perhaps he praised her beauty ("You found me beautiful once"). As Bruce once said, he's very, very bad at slow thinking, so everything - from screwing up the words to leading Arthur's army to even sleeping with Sheila - can be seen as snap impulses he comes to regret with more space and time. So imperfect but sympathetic is what he ultimately is.
