[Official Thread] Evil Dead Rise

Looks great! Really love the tone and feel of it so far, the family element is gonna make this a pretty emotional film just going off some scenes. Its nice to also see its not going full on 2013 as i saw some humor spiced in there in that scene with the one kid and the moms sister (Think her names ellie?)

Okay... Color me intrigued. I'm really not so sure about that kid's lines (and delivery), but there's a certain filmmaking energy, fun and inventiveness here that was sorely missing from the ED remake. I also like how it seems to be using familiar images and throwbacks to the original movie more creatively than I was expecting.

Man... I want to believe.

Heres the green band trailer that has way more footage and some very spoilery implications about connections to the franchise. i wouldnt watch this if you wanna leave yourself some surprises

I think the crazy bastards are gonna finally confirm theres multiple timelines and different versions of the book in this film, Bruce heavily implied this in a comic con interview about this film being about the book and how there was 3 versions of it in AoD.
That was totally professer knowbys voice in that green band trailer!

Plus another thing to note thats gone under the radar is that Ray Santiago has been playing very coy/trolling in interviews when asked about Pablo appearing in this film in some capacity and not out right denying he is in it. He did this same tactic in interviews after the s2 episode aired where he "died"

I feel like Rise is gonna be a very important/pivotal film lore wise for the franchise if they are indeed going this route.

Well, I'm already way more on board with this than I was with the remake at the same stage. Some good stuff, trepadaciously excited thus far.

Weirdly the green band is cut better than the red band, but that's just for me.

Pros:

* The characters already feel like characters, and likable ones instead of stereotypes. Good acting from the youngest kid, though jury's out on the two older ones.

* Deadites feel a little bit more like Deadites and have the right combination of playful glee at human suffering and archaic cleverness, which Alvaerez' take sorely lacked. The mom's clear frustrated bitterness combined with mother love in the egg scene is a really interesting and takes the The Human Is Still In There notion during Deadite posessment in a different direction.

* Hey, it looks like we have a reasonable reason for Deadite unleashment here via accidental record playing and kid curiosity vis the Weird and Evil Book Instead of Eric opening a barb-wire wrapped book with CLEAR WARNINGS IN ENGLISH ON IT I WILL NEVER BE OVER THAT!

* It also appears that perhaps teenage Beth and Ellie encountered the book and their friends bit it at this universe's version of the Knowby Cabin, which has led to Ellie keeping it safe under lock and key until her teenagers Teenagered it up before Ellie could warn them of the dangers? (it'd explain the "It's in me - don't let it take my babies!" proclamation she makes - she knows what it can do, she's seen it before)? If so, interesting.

* We also seem to have a reasonable reason for the Nec ending up in the apartment building basement vis that (Ellie's been watching it all the while).

* The new design for this version of the Nec is great.

* It feels very much like Cronin's Own Thing versus him trying nakedly to ape either Raimi or Alvarez, which is good. The humanistic tone very much reflects his work on The Hole in the Ground. There are some subtle references and big ones (the major one being, naturally, the bits of force POV we get), but they feel like they're in the trailer for a reason.

* The family feels very credibly real, and the Newt and Ripley-style chemistry between the living sister and the youngest kid is cute and has narrative promise.

* Decent gore! Blood flood scene feels like an actual ED reference and not a callback to The Shining.

* Ellie's actress is nailing her stuff as a posessed person and the little flashes we get of her pre-Deaditeification are interesting.

Cons:

* While Deadite Mom is killing it, I'm gonna need a little bit more time to see if Beth comes off well, in the trailers she's a hint bland so far, but has potential.

* Unless we get a major fakeout (totally possible, remake redband had a bunch of takes that aren't in the final version), the red band gives away a whole ton about who's gonna end up possessed (the mom, the two teens) and who has a chance at living (the sister, the youngest daughter). But anything's possible, and people do get un-possessed tout suite in this universe.

* The color grading. It's not as bad at the remake was, but, why.

* Nitpicky, but I still like my Deadites white-eyed.

Overall, pretty good!

Random observation

After years of Evil Dead movies just featuring buzzing flies on the soundtrack, we actually get one on-camera as it makes for Ellie's eye as she seems to lie there dead on her bed in the green band.

LOL, you just killed all my newly found enthusiasm and excitement I got from the trailer with the stuff under the spoiler tag. If any of that is actually true, I'm ready to dump this movie into the "just pretend it doesn't exist" pile along with the remake and AvED. I hope it all turns out to be nothing but unfounded rumors.

One of the things that had me even giving this movie a chance was that it seemed to be a standalone story and a fresh start for the franchise, in the same spirit of the original trilogy, but not beholden to it narratively. I'm honestly pretty tired of this multiverse nonsense that's been plaguing every franchise lately, forcing completely disparate past and present versions of the same material into a single universe and utterly ruining proper storytelling in the process, all for the sake of nonsensical and meaningless nostalgic fan service. Seriously, if Mia or fuckin' PABLO of all characters show up in this movie, it will make me give up on it on the spot. It'd feel to me like such a desperate and creatively bankrupt decision and wow, what a way to ruin what seemed like a solid restart! I don't even want Ash – or any character even remotely similar to him – to be in this movie. Just that shot of a potential protagonist holding a chainsaw while drenched in blood is already irking me a bit.

Also, Bruce using the three books on the graveyard altar in AoD to justify multiple Necronomicons from different universes makes no sense. Those weren't three actual Books of the Dead, it was only one true book and two decoy "trap books" to keep people from getting the real one. That's the whole damn point of the scene and the entire plot of the movie falls apart if there is more than one true book in that graveyard.

I think I like it…? I like the all female cast, but I also think that it looks too much like 2013. Thought they will try a different rout this time.

On the other hand it would be cool if it was a backdoor sequel for the 2013 one and we'd got a Jane Levy cameo at the end.

Multiverse is a hell of a drug.

Does anyone feel like the green band trailer is much better edited and put together than the red band trailer?

Personally, I don't. I wouldn't say either of them is particularly well edited or put together, but I definitely prefer the rhythm and crescendo of the red band trailer. Works better with the song too. The green band is the one that seems kinda all over the place to me, and I think I wouldn't have had such a positive reaction if that was the only one they had released.

I'm actually with you on that - I think it does a better job of secreting the movie's twists while adding in enough gore and shocks and plot hints to make me want to see it. Red Band does have its virtues but seems to give away a lot of the plot.

Green Band and Red Band trailers are something I never really paid close attention to, and always thought it was the difference between pg and rated r movies... but these trailers are very different despite the Green Band version being 7 seconds shorter it is more spoilery. Hearing the song Que Sera, Sera also makes me think of the movie Heathers.

Green and red band trailers for the same movie aren't usually this different. Most of the time they're pretty much the same cut, only the red band has a few seconds of extra violence, profanity or nudity in it replacing a couple of quick generic shots from the green band. They really went the extra mile for Evil Dead Rise though, as those really are two completely different edits containing a lot of material exclusive to each version.

I preferred the green band trailer on balance. We already knew a hi rise is going to be the setting but I liked the E.C. comics style shot of the building itself.

The scene with the fly on the mother's eyeball was nice and close up, it reminded me of some of the shots of the old Gypsy woman in Drag Me To Hell for some reason, I think because it places us uncomfortably close to her face. From the red band trailer, is that again the original clock from The Evil Dead making a cameo in the triangle-shaped house? (which looks to be in the same location as the lake so maybe a dream sequence? .. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens when someone's arm gets ravaged by a cheese grater (LOL) and also watching (presumably?) the mother swallowing a line of barbed wire and us seeing it going down from the outside of her neck. I could do without the Christ-like pose of her coming out of the lake unless that has some meaning other than the dream. Again, I'd have to see it in the context of the story before making any judgment... I loved her chilling description of the dream that you think is going to be loving but then turns out to be evil. That's something I've always felt stands apart from most demon films with our franchise apart from The Exorcist of course which reveled in cruelty as well as aggression. Kandarian demons are no thug killers like Jason Vorhees, they're cruel.

Watching the Red Band trailer slowly I noticed between the needle and eyeball scene and cheese grater we get a quick shot of the little girl Kassie holding a stick with a doll head on it, and Bridget (gotta' get the names down) one of the older kids is eating a bottle/wine glass as an after dinner snack... but the screams like when Ellie jumps out of the bathtub sound a lot like Shelly when she is standing in the window of the cabin in the original Evil Dead.
