Evil Dead Wrath | Official Thread

According to Kris from Hail To The Deadites, last night was the first night of test screenings for Evil Dead Wrath. Unfortunately he wasn't able to attend, so we don't have any reliable source should information start rolling out, so be sure browse the socials with a hefty grain of salt going forward!

EDIT: GRAIN OF SALT REQUIRED: Someone in the Reddit thread claims to have attended. While it's a super-vague statement (no plot details) and is very much a personal opinion take, I will still hide the remarks behind a spoiler tag.
The film didn't get a very good reception from the audience today. I was at a test screening. I think the film will undergo reshoots.
The film’s concept repeats, for the third time, the premise established back in the 2013 Evil Dead. The film wasn't poorly received overall—only its ending was.
I liked the film's style; it differs from the original trilogy but follows a formula similar to the franchise's recent installments.
EDIT 2: The alleged test screening attender has posted one spoilery comment. Could be nothing, but given what happened with Burn, I'd like it documented.
Comment: They need to find a new Ash and stick with the character. I thought Mia from the 2013 movie would fit the bill, but we never saw her again...
u/Life-Main5812: There will be a cameo in EVIL DEAD Wrath, that should surprise you :)

They're already doing test screenings even though the movie is still more than year and a half away?
That's some serious time for them to course-correct on anything they find the audience didn't like, and gives them time to rethink the marketing strategy to avoid falling into the same pitfalls as Burn (hopefully).

Until the budget runs out and they'll be forced to just shelve it for a year regardless.
But I guess we'll see.

That's disappointing to hear. I hope Francis didn't fall into the same trap as Fede and Sébastien, taking corpo studio money to make another corpo horror formula movie just to get their foot in the door.

I'm not really sure what to think until we know more for certain. But I'm willing to bet that the "repeated concept" the commenter is referring to has to be something to do with family, since that's something 2013, Rise, and Burn have all touched on in one way or another.

It's interesting to me that in a Post-Rise world the studio is either directly chasing Rise's aesthetic or desperately trying to make 2013 happen again. Burn was majorly weakened by its attempt at trying to glom itself onto Rise, so it'll be interesting if Wrath does the same with 2013.

WARNING: Another commenter/alleged attendee of the test screening has hit the Reddit post:
Hey guys I seen it at a test screening, wasn’t a fan of Rise but I liked Burn but this is miles ahead of both of them. Was really surprised with the filmmaking, lack of character development tbh. But it’s an evil dead movie nice cameo they had.
Someone asks: Does it connect at all to Burn or the original Evil Dead?
The alleged attendee responds: 2013

Now Kris is saying that according to his insider contacts, the screening was very successful and positively received, which contradicts the statements made by the two alleged attendees. At this point, I really don't know what to think because we the general masses won't know anything for another two years. It sucks if the statements about the connective-tissue to 2013 is true and we're getting a retread of what Burn did. All I can do now is just reiterate what I said earlier and warn everyone to take everything going forward with grains of salt until we start getting more information from legitimate interviews and press releases.

Interesting if true, but I certainly will be taking this all with a massive grain of salt, especially this far out. Regarding the spoiler in question, it's something I've already expected based on some of the speculation I have read online.

I suppose my glass-half-full take would be that it's encouraging to know the studio is devoting this much effort into making the movie a success. Then again, my glass-half-empty take would be that the studio will use any negative reception to stifle creativity and force their way into the movie for profit.

I think there might be a misconception in thinking that the studio pushed Wrath's premiere a whole year so that they have more time to polish it.

Usually the premiere date is just a marketing strategy and it very well may be that they already have some similar horror movies slotted for 2027, so they just pushed it to 2028. But the moment it goes over budget, they will just shelve it and wait for the release date, even if it's not good enough or even finished.

The only reason why Jurassic World Rebirth (the last one) got made was that Universal realized they don't have any big blockbuster ready for the 2025 Summer season, so they just slapped it together in under a year and hired Gareth Edwards, who is generally known to work very fast and efficiently.

That's why that movie is so bland and forgetable and seemingly pointles, although it still made almost 900 million in the box office, so what do I know…

I went to college with Gareth Edwards (Audio Visual, North Warwickshire College of Technology and Art in Nuneaton) and once did a Terminator make up for one of his student films when he was 17. Anyway, that's my boasting over, back To Evil Dead Wrath .

Hey, that's pretty cool! I like Gareth Edwards. I think that the stuff I don't like about his movies are generally not his fault (the studio reshoots for Rogue One and *gestures vaguely* in Jurassic World).

Rogue One was good, I haven't seen his Jurassic film yet. I've got a pic of us together as teens, I messaged Kain about how to upload images here the other day because I've needed to sort out a hosting site. It was another old film student friend who got in touch with me with the photo, I found out Gareth Edward's agents contact details, spoke to her on the phone and sent her the old photo of us all goofing around in the edit suite in '91. He emailed me back (and he must be a very busy man these days) to say Hi and chuckled about our Terminator film.

I'm going off topic here though sorry. Back to Evil Dead Wrath and I've got mixed feeling about seeing it. I didn't buy a copy of either Rise or Burn because I thought they were both forgettable if I'm being completely honest so I'm not expecting a lot from Wrath. I'll still go and see it though.

I like Kris' contributions to the fandom, but he has a tendency to cheerlead All Things Evil Dead and never allow for any bit of negative commentary about the franchise, so of course he's gonna say the movie's good or his sources say it's good. Even if it was a 20 minute video of the director's big toe, he'd say it was good. Tis his way.

Well... one doesn't get the exclusive treatments him and his other social media influencer ilk do by being critical of the product...

Yep!

Actually this reminded me of how critical he is about Army of Darkness and the comedic side of the franchise. While saying anyone who hates any of the modern movies is a "hater."

Early test screening viewers hail Francis Galluppi's 'EVIL DEAD WRATH' as superior to both 'EVIL DEAD RISE' and 'EVIL DEAD BURN'
Directed by Galluppi (The Last Stop in Yuma County) and produced by Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell, the upcoming spin-off reportedly strikes a rare balance: pairing the brutal, practical body-horror chaos of Fede Álvarez’s 2013 film with relentless, claustrophobic suspense.
Audience members in attendance noted that while Rise brought the terror to an apartment complex and Burn embraced a family reunion setup, Wrath elevates the stakes with superior pacing, razor-sharp dark humor, and standout practical Gore-FX set pieces.
Evil Dead Wrath will premiere in cinemas on April 7, 2028.

Alleged information about Wrath from Instagram user j_studios_23 (sourced from someone else). No actual plot spoilers, but more general information about setting and characters:

Evil Dead Wrath: Test Screening Reactions are extremely positive

It captures the grindhouse vibe of the original

The lead characters is named Evelyn and Ethan

It takes place in a 1970s suburban neighborhood

The house is very similar to the Cabin from the 1981 original

There's a lot of memories scenes and lines from the Deadites

There's a new demon called The Keeper

The screwdriver was the standout which is a callback to Pencil scene from the original

The book of dead shows image's of how some of the characters die just like the 2013 version

It has lots of gore

It's very Colorful how it's shot

And a Major character from the previous films returns
